: Corn Snake?
: DanoInTx November 01, 2009, 02:48:01 PM
I've been living herein Fort Worth for 9 years now and I've only seen maybe 2 snakes in my neighborhood since I've lived here...one being a water mocasin from the creak behind me.  Now in the last 2 weeks or so I've seen at least 4 more snakes, usually in my driveway or huddled up next to the bricks on my entryway at night.  I'm a city boy, don't know much about snakes, but I think this is a corn snake....anyone care to comment?

He/She is pretty small, like maybe 20" long.  I think the cooler nights are making them curl up next to the bricks that get heated by the sun during the day.  Been really wet here this year too, which means we've got TONS of frogs...a.k.a. "FOOOD!".

Yeah, that's a corn snake. They aren't poisonous, they constrict their prey, usually rats, though frogs aren't out of the question. They are normally very docile, so they shouldn't be a problem if you don't provoke them. Their non-aggressive nature is why they are common pets. They should cut down on the croaking around the house ;)

Now water moccasins on the other hand are not a snake you want to mess with...

Thanks,

After researching the web for 30 minutes or so I was pretty sure it was a corn snake, just wanted someone else to agree with me, haha!!

Seems like my mother in law is always the one to come across these things (she lives next door), maybe they will keep her from coming over:)

I lived in Houston for 4 years in the late 70's.  I remember the school kids were taught this little ditty - "...red on yellow, kill a fella". Referring to a coral snake.
This is a corn snake. But the coral snake has similar colors - so remember this little rhyme.

Yup, "Red on yellow will kill a fellow. Red on black, you're OK Jack."
