I'm new at this target shooting thing and have a quick question. I understand an X is 10 points but does it have to be an X to get 10 or does it just have to break the line on the 10 (X) ring?

Hey Matt,
For a "10", all that you must do is break the ten ring line !
For an "X", your shot must be within the 10 ring line, totally within the line, not breaking it in any way.
In the "STEROID 15" RIFLE MATCH, an "X" is scored "11" POINTS. Good Luck buddy !

"It depends" on the match you are shooting in, and the target that is used.
Some targets have an X ring inside the 10 ring. You treat that just like another ring, but instead of an additional point, you score it as a 10 and keep count of the number of X hits.
Bill is talking about the rules here, where there isn't a separate X ring on the targets.
