: Looking for a .22 springer
: ezman604 November 23, 2009, 07:57:35 AM
Okay, since I'm having a hard time getting replacement .22 barrels for my AGs, I thought I'd toss this out there and see what happens. I'm looking for a descent .22 for hunting and paper punching at 30+ yards. Prefer wood but will consider synth stock. Scope a plus but not required. I think I might find one around here somewhere. :)
Looking to stay under $200, Mrs Santa is on a budget. Funny, she doesn't even know she's getting me a new AG. HeeHee
Yeah, there's lots of places selling guns but thought someone here may have one that would part with that has had some special touches added you can't get from factory pieces. But, if you know of a really good bargain online, post that here too.
Let me know what you have and please send photos to my email address ezman604@hotmail.com.
Thanks and Happy Shooting!!!!

RWS Diana 34 (German made) can be found for $199 new, and I believe the 34P w/synthetic stock as well.  It's a classic workhorse.  More 34's are sold than any other Springer model (any manufacturer) I have read - can't confirm it, but it doesn't sound too far out there. It's a very popular gun and is also at the low end of the "Magnum powered" ones. 14+fpe in .177 and 15-16fpe in .22.

There are various Crosman .22 Springers for under $200 as well.  If you want more power, shop around for a used (19-20fpe) RWS Diana 48 .22 for a little more: $225-250.  The 48 is a side-cocker, not break-barrel but you didn't specify what type of gun..  There are also many Gamos out there for under $200 - used.

Thanks Harry,
May have to up my budget a smidge to get a descent one. BUT, the TF89 in .22 is selling for $149.95. Actually same gun as my Walther Force 1000 but a nicer stock and in .22 cal.
That's without glass, which is no prob. I was hoping someone here had a good .22 that is collecting dust and wanted to find a loving home for it.(http://../jscripts/tiny_mce/plugins/emotions/images/smiley-laughing.gif)

If your close to Walmart they have Beeman 1073 which is also Beeman RS2 and have a true 2 stage trigger. I have mine for over 2 years now and is my goto Air Rifle is power and accuracy is needed. I chopped my barrel to 13 inch and added a shinny thing to make it friendly. This comes with 2 barrels, 22 and .177 and I mostly use the .22 for it's too much for the .177, shoots much sweeter with the .22. I think they sale this at walmart for $127 and It will be easier for exchange if you get a dude, no need to wait for shipping to and from. That's my take on this AG.

Thanks Joe,
It's definately a "Pimp My Gun" rig. Looks good. I'm just not sure it's got the power I'm looking for. I may be looking for the Holy Grail of .22 hunters. One that has 20+ fpe, accurate, consistant and under $200. I'm still looking at the TF89 and liking it more the more I read. It has definate possibilities and is identical to my Walther Force 1000 but nicer furniture.
Thanks again and you guys keep em' coming!!!!

The .22 CFX's are now in stock. Most selling for $170 plus s&h. Great gun to start with. Add Charlie's trigger later on for about $30 and you're set. And they have a nice synthetic stock.

ps - Pyramyd Air might have a coupon, too. I think one of the others (Airgun Depot?) has them with 5% for first time buyers.

True, power ain't everything. But, if you can get power AND accuracy, you got something special.
Still leaning toward the TF89 unless I can get one of those Walther Falcon's that WERE for sale here a while back.
Doubtful, but waiting on replies to pm.

You're right, PA does not list it. But AirGunDepot does:

I'm customizing one with an english walnut stock and a custom designed muzzle brake. I just purchased a fiddleback maple blank to carve my own stock for the other...which will eventually get a custom muzzle brake too.

Pre-tune the TF89 .22 shot a string with a standard deviation less than one -- and that was without weighing the pellets. The new generation of TF89s is awesome.

Powerful and accurate.

.22 with 14.2 CPHP @ 758fps > 18+ FPE

.177 with 7.9 CPHP @912fps > 14+ FPE

All I did for tune was debur & lube tune it and use original seal and spring. There was a post that can bring the RS2 to higher FPS and I think with what she's spitting now is fine since it is now smooth and and it benched at 17 yards and it place all 5 pellets in the size of a penny. Mine shoots well also with daisy .22 wadcutters and that's what I use to get varmint squirrels inside 20 yards to minimize shot over. Another bump for the CFX at $169.  Great accuracy, good power, very nice package (at least in my 177 version).  Only thing lacking by some is the trigger.  You might want to make sure that the newer models are compatible with the Tuna's trigger upgrade.  Heard that there might be some changes made to the Gamo design.

Good luck on the search!

power is not everything...

I second that. Plus, Gene has stopped tuning the talon mags. They have a LOT of recoil. TF89 is a big gun here on the GTA right now, for a good reason; It is a magnum (hunting) extremely accuarate (target) and Gene tunes them very nicely (perfection!) It is the gun that I chose after considering a lot of others. I looked at the Talon mag but dropped it quickly.
: Re: Looking for a .22 springer
: shawn67 November 23, 2009, 11:09:15 PM
TF89! I have a TF89 in .22 turbo tuned by Gene and its shooting over 24ft lb and dead accurate, mine wasn't near as smooth or as strong before Mr. Gene worked his magic on it but it was accurate, and I'd put it up against any other springer out there as far as accuracy goes, so whoever said they aren't accurate clearly doesn't own one, just ask the bookdoc, he has a few of them. And as far as power goes, mine is shooting 15.3 grain pellets at almost 860 FPS, (its actually gained about 30 fps since putting 1000 or so pellets through it since the tune, must be settling in) and is as smooth as silk(due to Genes Turbo Tune) I actually bought mine and scoped it with a Barska 4X12X44A0 for just a shade over 200, then you can always get the turbo tune later, I don't know what they go for now but when I bought my B26 in .22 off Mike Melick at Flying dragon air rifles I got it tuned and shipped for a little over 200. They have went up a little in price since I got mine but not by much. And its a light super accurate gun with a great trigger. It shoots 14.3 grain pellets at 680+ FPS and hobby pellets in the 730s, I wouldn't part with either one of my guns but it shows what kind of potential some of these 200 dollar guns have, get one, get some good glass, get a tune done or do it yourself and you can have a gun that will outshoot most of the higher dollar guns out there.

Sorry Josh,
Was still pondering that one but can't really justify spending that much right now. Hated to close the door on it but guess I need to stay realistic with my situation. I'm about to push the button on the TF89. I'm familiar with the tear-down already and can always take my Walther barrel off and mount it to this one for a .177. Or, just keep them both. :)
Yours is an exceptional piece and I'd love to have it but.....
Plus, yours is READY to hunt, I'm a tinkerer. I want to buy one and disassemble it to see how it looks inside and make any improvements I can.
Thanks again, I appreciate the offer!!

Dave, if you are buying the TF89 to get a .22 barrel, you might as well just keep the TF89 .22 as is! That and the Walther are both TF89s, and really the new TF89 .22s seem to be even slightly better than before. Hate to see you put in the effort just to have the same gun all over again!

Rich,
My quest began with trying to find a set of .22 barrels for my .177s to swap out and have both calibers. But, after looking around and seeing 1) replacment barrels are HARD to get & 2) the TF89 is identical to the Walther but nicer, I have decided to keep the Walther as-is and just add a .22 horse to my stable. :)
I'll be ordering a .22 TF89 today. I have an order form filled out at Compasseco but waiting on an email reply from a member here that has one for sale.
I DO still have a .22 barrel on order for my Benji andI'm quite sureit's going to be a powerhouse shooter with that barrel.
Looking forward to my new scope arrival too. I will be mounting it on my soon to have TF89.

LOL
Might be. Think it can handle it? I mean the scope handling the gun? It WILL be tuned to tame it down some. And very frankly, I have several high power powder burners with scopes. I have had my Daisy/Powerline/Winchester 1000 for 2 years with the factory 3-9x32 scope along with my Benji & Walters that are glassed. I have put many rounds through all but the Benji and Walther and have NEVER had an issue with glass going bad. Now that I've said that, I'll probably have one take a dump on me soon. :)
I personally like the spring loaded scope stop on the Walther/TF89. Theoretically, if there is too much shock, it helps absorb it. Guess I've just never been snakebit by the glass issue.

Well, Leapers may be true strength, but the 89 is tougher. See my review in my sig. Plus, that scope stop is crap. I have knocked it up 2 times, only 10 shots after putting it on. I said this same stuff to some one else who got the same scope. I am going to return the scope to PA asap.

Compasseco TF guns are hit or miss an worse their return policy sucks, takes 30 days to process a return or to get money back.
I ordered a TF 89 and it was a lemon, and have to wait forever to get my money back.

: shawn67 November 25, 2009, 11:22:32 AM
I have not had problems with Compasseco's customer service on the contrary they have went out of they're way to please, my TF89 had a issue with the safety when I first received it and the stock cracked on me, they had me the part to fix the safety and a new stock out the next day! I will agree on hit and miss quality sometimes, my TF89 had a torn seal and spring fatigue within 2 weeks but I bought the gun with full intentions of having it tuned in the first place, but I still made them aware of the issue and they offered to send me a new gun or a new spring and seal whichever I preferred, I told them I was having the gun tuned so they sent me two Tech Force hats and Two of the little sx1 pistols free because they want happy customers and repeat customers, if they had not given me anything I would have still been satisfied but they really went beyond what any other company would have done.
: Re: Looking for a .22 springer

You will love the gun, if you really want to fully appreciate what it can do send it to Gene for a turbo tune and you will be AMAZED! This gun has some serious power and accuracy, good choice, I've scouted both of my airgun purchases very carefully and I love both of my rifles, my next gun will be scouted out just as much before I purchase it and this is the best place in the world to find out about any make and model of gun both the good and the bad, your fellow GTA members will tell you anything you want to know and help in any way they can

: only1harry November 25, 2009, 03:24:40 PM
I am with the others.  I think they have very good customer service and ship very fast when they have the gun or item in stock, unlike P/A which ships 3-4 days after you place the order, unless you pay the $5 for "next-day processing".  I paid the $5 to P/A one time when I was out of a particular pellet, and they still shipped 2 days after I placed the order.

Some people may not know this but Compasseco is a very big company and were the #1 airgun reseller before P/A became very popular, but they are still big.  They have been around for a very long time (almost 20yrs I think).  A couple of years ago they were the largest RWS reseller and they might still be.  The only issue I have with them, is their hours which are like 9-5.. and you can't call them on Saturdays.  They should really stay open until 7 or 8pm at least a couple of days/wk.

What an ordeal. I finally got my hands on my new TF89. I won't get into all the details but just getting it took several phone calls and emails. I'm not at all happy with all the hoops I had to jump through to get the new AG. I got her home this afternoon with about 1 hour of daylight left. I rushed to get my camera and get her unboxed. I was at first impressed with the extras they shipped with it but on second look, it's really not that good of a quality of stuff but its usable. I do appreciate free stuff, if it's really worth my time and something I can really use. What they included was a flimsy pellet trap, 100 each 5-1/2" square targets and a 250 tin of TF wadcutters.
The rifle is almost identical to the Walther Force 1000. Furniture was a little darker but has grip and forearm checkering. Has the flourecscent lite grabbing iron sights and has the same spring loaded scope stop the Walther comes with. But, this one does not come with a scope. Rifle looked good after unpacking. Wood looked okay and blueing was deep and even. I had to forego my usual pre-shooting barrel cleaning since I was hustling to beat the sunset to get some shots through the chrony. I did check the barrel to see just how clean or dirty it was and to make sure there was no obstructions in there. All clear, lets go shoot. I set up the chrony and printer and fired 5 rounds of Gamo Rockets (14.6gr) and a 5 shot string of CPHP (14.5gr).
I have to keep reminding myself these are the FIRST rounds through this gun and it should settle out after I do my home tune and after the proper break-in. But, Gamo Rockets were VERY wide. Ranged from 677.99 to 776.96. I SHOULD have shot a 10 round string and thrown out the top and bottom but this was just a starting point before servicing. This gave me up to 19.5 in fpe. With CPHP there was less spread. Ranged frm 772.24 to 794.08 for a max fpe of 20.31. This is what I was after for a hunting AG, one that gives me 20+ fpe. After the tune, it should be a bit better and more stable after break-in.
The trigger had too much first stage travel. Break was crisp and did not hang or drag. I'll have time to tweak it after the tune and will polish the surfaces while I'm doing the power plant. So, the trigger should get better also. I did not attempt any accuracy tests considering I had no scope mounted yet and again, losing daylight fast. I did select a large leaf about 15 yards out on the ground. I hit exactly where I was aiming, a good quick test for barrel droop or bend. Will post more test results after I get the time to tear her down and service. So, overlooking the order processing and tracking issues, I'm happy with the purchase and would recommend it.
Happy Shooting & Shopping!!!!

I was going to HIGHLY recommend the Quest 800x with a GRT_III trigger and a Turbo Tune by Gene, ... but that's over $200.00. How about the 800x with just the GRT-III, - that would be around $147. It comes with an "ok" scope, but with the loose change you could pick up a better  one.

Oh, and back to the original idea... Walther Force 1000 ($69) and a Turbo Tune ($149)...$218 for an awesome gun.

I have several of the AR1000 rifles very good guns after cleaned and lubed, they do settle down and get quite after that the .22cal's are very accurate. I've taken many crows and piegeon's with these rifles I have one right now that ^*^()(%*^$%^)()(&( is rebarreling to .20cal for me. It was a .177cal av's 1034fps wasn't as accurate as I wanted so a good platform to rebarrel so we'll see how it turns out.

Good choice! They sent me the same freebies. The targets are good (thin cardboard makes good pellet holes) but the trap and pellets are junk. The hat is cool though!

The "original idea" was a springer, preferably with a wood stock for under $200.00 - 800X suits that to a "T". - Add a GRT-III trigger, nice gun for the price.

Yes...it had gotten a way away from that, I think. I think your points were good -- that's why I added the Walther...
