http://www.narleychoppers.com/catalog/18-3623.jpg being a Harley guy going through my parts bin I wondered if anybody thought this part would have a use in OUR hobby.Might try it on a super streak to stop some of the twist.What do some of you real tuners think.

That a needle bearing? If so, I would skip it. Loose parts = gun farts.

I ques you could say they are needle bearings of sorts,they are not loose but sandwiched between two pieces of stamped stainless.In a Harley they are used as a throw out bearing to disingauge the clutch from transmission.I haven't measured on but I would say they are about an inch in dia. and an eighth inch thick.

I would suggest that you don't use it. If you do, you might be looking to purchase another gun before long. It's nothing new and has destroyed a number of guns.

I used to be a technical instructor for Harley Davidson Motor Co.... and I can tell you point blank that that clutch"throwout" bearing won't work in a springer application.
However... there are thrust bearings made that do have the potential for use in a continuous preload, high torque application. You just have to find the right rating and size.
An example (although too large for a springer) can be found as an aftermarket upgrade for MX and off-road racingrear mono-shock springs. The idea, like the idea to eliminate binding in a gun, is the same.

Search on "needle bearings". I passed on Jock Elliot's heavily modified CFX with which he won an FT match because the tuner was known to include needle bearings in his work (although I could not confirm in that particular gun). While searching, I saw several horror stories about the bearing races giving way and the rollers creating a train wreck, some to the point of irreparable damage. There seems to be no anecdotal proof that a roller or needle bearing is any better than polished, lubed spring ends and stainless washers. Of course, it's up to the owner. I just can't justify the risk over hard to qualify gains.
