I am considering a trade for a RWS 460 which is beautiful but for the chrome in the breach (sorry, don't know exactly what to call that part...). Please have a look at the pictures attached and tell me what you think of the discoloration. I think I'd like the gun, but not if it is not well.
Thanks!
-
Rich,
I see a fingerprint so it's evidently a metal reaction to the oil in the fingers when it was stored for an extended time without being oiled or cleaned first. Several things you could do. Try to get a replacement piece (breach slide or breach cover?), try 0000 steel wool but keep it cleaned and oiled afterwards or disassemble and use a buffing wheel and compound to clean it and get a sheen back on it. Possibly use a Drimel with a buffing pad and chrome polish. I have used Break-Free toclean and oil my guns for MANY years and never had a problem with rust.
Happy Shooting!!!!

This might work >> http://www.gatewaytoairguns.com/airguns/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=13425&posts=12&highlight=jeweling&highlightmode=1#M109612

That's actually not chrome. It's a cheap stainless steel alloy that the Chinese use on their guns. That's why it rusted.
You could remove the air chamber from the gun and repolish it or Jewel it like mentioned above. You could also take a piece of fine steel wool and add a little WD40 to it and rub out the rust. Be careful of the blued metal though.
-
this 'cheap chinese steel' came from germany ;-)
-
Sam is right Rich. The 460 is out sourced or atleast the parts are. I hate to give the 460 a bad rap but the 48,52 and 54 series are truly made in Germany and so are the parts.. They are made to last a lifetime. One thing for sure is that the RWS air rifles do need to be properly lubed.
-
if you like the gun and want a nice fix to the dis-coloration, take the gun apart and 'jewel" it.....it will really look nice then. jeweling adds a lot of character to gun.
-
Didn't think about jeweling...Dooohhhhh.
Excellent choice since it will help remove or cover any damage the rust has caused already.
Adds that custom sparkle too. I've also jeweled with a pencil eraser in a cordless drill....poor mans tool. :)
Happy Shooting!!!!

For Jeweling, nothing beats a cheap Ink Pen Eraser. You know... those cheapie pens that look like pencils and have the slightly abrasive eraser that WILL NOT (no matter how much you try? hehe) erase the ink before it tears the paper? I was on the drill team in boot camp and we used to use them to keep our 1903's "In the White"
Anyway... Those make PERFECT jeweling abrasives. Just chuck 1 up in the drill press, spray your part with a light oil and turn away!
-
Not to stray from the thread but where is the source for the Chinese parts? We've gone over this on the Dianawerk, even contacting Diana, and there seems to be no verifiable truth in it.
-
UmarexUSA.com....
I contacted them and got an immediate reply with an exploded parts diagram. I'm guessing it's part #9?
Hard to tell without the gun torn down in front of me. They are getting me a price and availability. I'll post it as soon as they respond.

hey, thanks for the extgra work! I'll be interested when you get a response. If it isn't ridiculously expensive, that might drive my interest in the gun...
You are awesome!
-
Well Rich,
Umarex got back to me and they do not sell the compression tube (item #9). She recommended using a solvent to remove the rust. I think the members have given you some better recommendations. If it's one you're buying, you can use this info as a bargaining chip. (http://../jscripts/tiny_mce/plugins/emotions/images/smiley-laughing.gif)Pack it up and ship to me, I'll tear it down and buff that sucka up. LOL Or do the jeweling. That would look really good on the gun.
Sorry I didn't get better news for you. But there HAS to be a source for these somewhere. Maybe MM knows of a parts source?
Happy Shooting!!!!

Hey, Dave, thanks for the effort. Weird they won't sell parts like that -- not like they wouldn't charge more for a part than it is worth in the whole...
Actually I was going to trade for a RWS350 I have...too similar to the rest of my guns. I mean I have a TF89 (.177, .22), a Cometa Fusion (.22), and Walther Force 1000. At least the RWS460 is an underlever...and when I get that I can sell my TF97 for whatever...Still a decent rifle. I'll see about PMing for parts ;-)
-
BTW Bhawanna, thanks for the great suggestion! I might go that way.
-
Guess I'm slow or hard headed. (my wife says both) But I've been chatting with them more and it sounds like all parts are available with the exception of compression chamber(#9). It sounds like it's an older gun but I'm not familiar with it so..... She states that they COULD get the barrel and receiver but it would cost $225 or more. (just to give you an idea of prices) She said her price list was old. (http://../jscripts/tiny_mce/plugins/emotions/images/smiley-money-mouth.gif)
She can price individual parts if needed. So, if you need any parts for this or any other RWS AGs, you can contact Anna Dalton of UmarexUSA at anna@umarexusa.com ("anna@umarexusa.com) .
Happy Shooting....and shopping.

Funny, I was just emailing with her about a completely unrelated item! I'll get her while I still have her interest. They were fixing a defective c-mount for me...
Thanks!
-
LOL...now she says she has checked with the service department manager and he is contacting Germany for them to send some #9 compression chanbers. Will be 45-60 days out though. She advised to check back in about a week for an updated status. She also said for all of us to feel free to contact her for parts info. Her title isthe Customer Firearms Specialist.

-
awesome...I just sent her an email about them!
-
Hey Rich,
DidUmarex ever update the status of the part, did you decide to just jewel it instead or did you forget the deal all together?
Dave

Yeah, I never got an update. The guy who had the gun sold it elsewhere cause I delayed. Probably for the best. Came to find afterward it was a refurb anyway, so it wasn't the deal I thought it was -- nothing against refurbs, but I know where I can get them myself. Meanwhile I thought about what I really want, and it is not that. TX200, RWS54, or maybe an inexpensive alternative in the TF87... Then time to find my TF97 a new home. I need to make them all special and not just 'cool' or I'll have too many in no time...
