: My best grouping ever...
: thebookdoc December 18, 2009, 02:18:52 AM
I didn't bother taking a picture because there was nothing to see. I was out testing a new scope and mount I put on my Cometa Fusion 400. The scope was a Leupold Mark 4 replica that I got for interests sake. I was shooting at 10 yards sitting up, hand-held without a rest of any sort. I took about 10 shots fiddling with the mount and scope to try and zero without using the turrets too much (the mount is adjustable) then took about ten shots getting a decent grouping of about .5. Looking through the scope, I tilted my head up and down and noticed a LOT of play in the POI. The scope was already at the minimum focusing distance and magnification, so I tried tipping my head up and down, noting the top and bottom POI, then tried to hold my head so the POI was equidistant high and low on a target. I took a shot and bulled. I almost went inside right then, but I decided to see if that would work again. I shot, and didn't see the impact point. Could it really have been in the exact same hole? I shot a third time, same thing. Either the scope just broke or the pellets weren't even coming out of the barrel. I slapped the barrel open and looked down to see the light on the other side...nothing stuck there.

I put up another 1.5" target. I shot. Bull. I took another. No evidence of impact. Another...nothing. Another...I saw something fly off the trap -- a splinter of balsa came out of the hole. Another...just the slightest ovaling to the top and right of the bull.

Stopping short of digging into the trap to confirm there are 5 pellets in exactly that same hole, I have to take what I saw to confirm the best grouping of my life... I'd say something on the order of .03275" center to center. I also have to marvel at the rifle, am very pleased with the mount which held its ground allowing the scope to do its job, and beside the seemingly severe sensitivity to positioning of my head, the scope held up well, convincing me these knockoffs are not all that bad. Not as good as my Leupold, no, but worth $100? So far it is.

I'm just wondering if I'll ever do that again!

I sure know what you mean, not believing that they're stackin' tight.  Had a good night at the range last night myself.  Had 7 out of 10 under an inch easy from my powder burner 22 pistol at 50' one hand offhand.  That Izzy shure is helping me with my slow fire scores.  After playing there I moved to the 46M on the 10m GTA tgt and had an 89 and one in the low 90's maybe 91-91.  I used an NRA hvy style tgt as a backer to help with scoring but need to spend more time today with it to try and decipher the hits.  May not be that good......Wonder if there is any chance of talking with the solons here re tgt and see if we can't find something that is an acceptable size available on the mkt printed on tgt stock and maybe a reduxed variety for those who can't stretch the 10m in the garage, house etc...........may have to ping someone after I do some research.

I predict, having owned a Cometa .177 Fusion Star for several months now, that we'll be seeing a lot more posts and threads about new Cometa owners, tiny groups and how thrilled they are with a gun that looks, feels and shoots several hundred dollars more than it actually costs.

You could use the ISSF/NRA 10 meter AP target.
The rings on the GTA 10m AP target is slightly smaller when printed on my printer.
The problem is, a JPG image will print to fit the paper.  It could scale up or scale down.  Unless the diameter of one (or more) of the rings is specified, you cannot be certain that the GTA target I print is the same size as the target the you print.
Example, the target that I printed, the diameter of the 1 ring is 143mm H and 142mm V.  Is this correct by the person that made the GTA 10m match pistol target?  I don't know.  Now when I used another program to print the target the same ring was 167mm H.
Spec for the ISSF/NRA 10m AP target is 155.5mm diameter for the 1 ring.  Right in between the size of the 2 targets that I printed.

Other options:
- Shoot less shots per target.  When I was on my game, I had to limit to 5 shots per target, as I could not score 10 shots on a target, the target was too damaged to score.
- Print the target on heavier paper (at least 60 pound stock), where the pellet will punch a cleaner hole.

So, who was the Leupold Mark 4 replica made by?
: RE: re target
: TAJ45 December 18, 2009, 01:34:16 PM
Yessir, 5 shots per tgt for the sustained portions of BE for the .45 match at 50' sure makes it easier on the scorers.  I had considered that but also needing to scale down to 22-23' for easy garage use.  Mill is in way for the cross corner shot.

Had considered doing the ratio and proportion thing to get the same area to shoot into as things change by the square of the radius.  Still haven't done that and compared, percentage-wise to the NRA 50' and 25 yd tgts to see if that is a viable theory.  Hints anyone?

I do have some 50' Oly small bore tgts and some 50' NRA bulls, 5 to a half sheet that should be pretty close.  I realize that this is set up to get folks shooting w/o the veins in the teeth syndrome and some variations in tgt size as printed aren't deal breakers for me.  All I want to do is show improvement.  Besting someone isn't where it's at.  We had a Marine team shooter show up one night at the range and I was soooooo glad the guys could finally see a really GOOD shooter go through the paces.  That boy could lay'em in there.  A treat to watch knowing that he'd overcome all the little bugaboos that I am continuing to deal with.  His Pardini was some real eye candy too.

OK, going to slip over to the National Target sight and see what I can shake out of their bush.

I read a blurb on another board that Leupold was getting the knockoffs in for repair...........of course they can't honor a counterfeit - they didn't make it.  Even showed some comparisons as to markings.  Why buy one when there is no recourse when it takes a dump?

Jaymo, I really don't know. It is a pretty good imitation, right down to the reflectivity of the reticle. The box is unmarked, the scope says Leupold Mark 4, and the instructions have no mention of country of origin or brand. To me, one of the give-aways was that it comes with bikini caps, which the two Leupold scopes I bought did not have. but, yeah, I don't know who really makes them. I've definitely had worse scopes though!

well, it cost me about 1/24th what the real one cost...that's a starter. I figure if they even get 1/12th of the way there, I made out on the deal. I can't justify $1300 for a scope...

It's like having a fake Rolex. Why bother with a knockoff is beyond me.

If you have excel on your computer I have a spreadsheet that will generate the ring diameters for any reduced range, down to 6 meters.
AND it also compensates for the pellet diameter.  By this I mean when you reduce the range, the target scales down, but the pellet does not.  Effectively you are shooting a .45 when you should be shooting a .32...bigger hole scores higher.

Send me your email via PM and I will email you the spreadsheet.

You will need a target generating program like the Pellant Target Program.  It is a 2.6MB file, if you can't find it, I can email it to you also.

Well, the $1200 difference has something to do with it. And like the Chinese rifles that everyone was saying stunk -- and I come to find they don't -- I am the doubting Thomas and have to try it myself. I'm going to venture it may be one of the best side-focus scopes you can get for under $100...

I'd never pay for a Rolex, because all it does is tell time. Why on earth would I ever need a $40,000 watch?! To me it is just flaunting that you can afford something frivolous. We'll I'd rather take half a year off work than drop $40,000 so I don't miss a doctor's appointment that he'll be late to.

I hear a lot around gun forums "you get what you pay for".... well, I think "don't knock it till you tried it" is just as valuable. Sometimes you'll pay more to get quality, and sometimes you'll pay to get taken. I didn't pay $600 thinking I was getting a $1400 scope, and I didn't pay for the name. I paid $100 for a scope that looks like a $1400 one wondering how it behaved and if it was worth buying. I wanted to see for myself first hand that they either worked or didn't. Maybe I'll import them...who knows. I won't lie and say they are Leupold... and I know for a fact that a lot of people are looking for a decent deal in a scope.

What's the point? Saving $1200 or more to shop for something else, and finding out the reality rather than the rumor.

Dave, Sorry to lead you in another direction. But didn't I turn you on to the TF89? The Cometa feeds some of my interest in style, technology (ported brake), handling (smoothest cocking rifle I have), and accuracy. I'd take it over the RWS350 any day. It seems to give me something more for paying extra... and I don't feel the RWS 350 did.

I agree i do however like quality things when i can afford them but for watches ive owned several fake flea market rolexs they tell time for $20 a piece instead of $20000 i wouldnt spend that on a watch if i was a billionaire if you can get the same or almost the same at a fraction of the price i think its foolish to get the more expensive one if there the same imo
