Hello there everybody. So I've been wanting to try out a GAMO Whisper class shooter for quite a while now -- and now that PA has the the CSI Camo Edition on sale for $199.99 both in .22 & .177 cal I think I may pick one up instead of settling with a cheap Chinese style shooter. My question is two bills worth it for this particular rifle? I've been reading reviews over the past couple of hours and it seems to be "hit & miss" with some reviewers. Mostly due to the fact that the NDS2 doesn't seem to work as well as some shooters would come to expect. Also since I'm only limited to maybe purchasing just one rifle -- I am debating whether I should get .22 cal or .177....I have tons of .177 pellets and only a few .22. Being as that the only .22 pellets here are the Crosman Premier Points @big5. So I'm kinda iffy on the two calibers. Mostly I'm going to take care of those rats and other little critters out back. So not really much target practice. Oh on another note. There is also the traditional GAMO Whisper Air Rifle. It's only about $26 more at $225.90 and it comes with a one piece scope mount and a 3-9x40 scope. That $26 really holds its value :P Gosh I'm so lost!
Or maybe I should look into a Disco? I mean I have some tanks from getting back into paintball just recently...so maybe I can find another use for em?
Someone please help :)

I just bought a Whisper Deluxe for $200 at a local sporting goods store. I've run about 250 pellets through it so far and its super accurate. I can get one hole groups with Gamo Hunter pellets and Crosman pointed field hunters. It also shoots very fast. Mine goes supersonic with the gold PBA ammo. the trigger takes some getting used to but its not that bad. The scope that came with it isn't great either because it doesn't have an adjustable objective but that's easily fixed. I honestly was not a fan of Gamo before I bought the rifle and only bought it because of the low price. (It was actually cheaper then the regular whisper with the 4 x 32 scope.....go figure). Anyway I'd definitely recommend the Whisper. Good luck deciding.

Hi Tyler,,, I see this is your first post so I just wanted to welcome you to GTA,, very nice to have you with us :)
Sounds like you and your whisper have "become one" :)
BTW..... I wouldn't shoot those gold PBA pellets in your whisper.... they are way to light and they can actually damage the internals of your rifle..... They're fine for pneumatic rifles but not good for spring rifles.....

Thanks its good to be with other like minded individuals. I had heard that about the lead free pellets so far I've only shot 3 of them through the rifle but I suppose your info will put an end to that. Thanks for the help!

I have a csi in .22 and can tell you that it is a rifle worth putting money into. A decents scope (3-9 at least) and a trigger got groups down to 1 inch at 35 yards. then a ventury gas ram. now is super quiet and very predictable. It is one of my favorite rifles (up there with my R1, R7 and AA talon ...) it is very light, sturdy and is spitting hobbies at 805 fps avg.!!! it loves them and sends them down range with surgical precision. it doesn't hurt that it looks sick. I like it so much i ordered a .177 with the wood stock... i have seen what the same combo i got can do on a .177. touching cans at 140 yards. yeah, 140... is crazy. if you had to get one only then stick to the .177 and use heavies for hunting. But i do love the noise a .22 makes when it connects with a crow at 30+ yards...

Gabe,
Are these the 'Hobbies' your using ?

I have the regular, plain ol' 22 Whisper. Installed a 'Tuna Trigger' and swapped the spring over to a gas ram. Love it !

Yeah having used many GAMO rifles I kinda know what to expect :) The Whisper is basically your regular Big-Cat 1200 but it just has the NDS2 system permanently integrated onto the barrel. Mainly getting it for the courtesy of being "nice" to my neighbors; ultimately, a quiet shooter is a must in this neighborhood, ha. AirgunDepot has a refurbished Whisper for $189.99 -- so with a 5% off coupon and shipping it equates to $192.87. At PyramydAir a brand new CSI Edition Whisper is $199.99 (no scope/rings) -- so with a 10% off coupon and shipping it equates to $194.37. Or I could buy a brand new traditional Whisper for $225.90 with either a 5% off or 10% coupon + shipping is around $245-250. Jeeze I don't know what to do!! *sigh* & *cries* I'm most likely going to get the .177 model over the .22; also on another note I have read that the stock 3-9x40 scope that comes on the Whisper isn't that great? So I assume it's worth it to save the $35-40 when buying let's say the un-scoped CSI edition to get another scope and a set of rings? I'm like so stuck lol (http://../jscripts/tiny_mce/plugins/emotions/images/smiley-embarassed.gif)

The 3-9x40 scope that came with my Whisper DX is junk compared to my Leapers 3-9x32 with AO. With the Gamo scope you can't even see the crosshairs if you put the scope on 5x at 10 yards. It's ok if your hunting at shorter distances but personally I'd rather be using open sights then the Gamo Scope. Just my opinion. You can get a decent scope with AO for like $50 so I'd get the Whisper CSI and just order the scope and rings with it. Again just my opinion! Good luck

yes, those are it. the orange tin of lovely pellets that go exactly where they are aimed to. By the way, the big cat and the whisper are not the same rifle. The breach seal on the BC is on the barrel, and the whisper has the more efficient seal that is actually on the side of the air port. it makes a more consistent rifle (had both, still own the whisper) and it seems to seal better as it shows a smaller deviation shot from shot. But yes, the trigger is a must, and the gas ram is just nice to have...
-
Gabe,
So far, my gas ram Whisper has shown a dislike for lighter pellets, but I think I'll get some to try next pellet order.
Paul.

I should have reworded that better -- the Whisper and the Big-Cat share the same qualities; ex. same style synthetic stock (different butt pad), same power-plant, same action (break barrel), same trigger (theoben style). Ultimately; they are basically the same rifle just with minor changes. Probably the only upgrades I would get consist of the GRT Trigger, 1-piece scope mount and a mildot AO scope :) I also found a GAMO Silent Cat for $172 brand new, so that may be on my list as well.. -Jarred
-
Jarred... HI... I own a GAMO WHISPER VH .177... are ACCURATE light weight with the synthetic stock. I recommend you these rifles without any problem / GERALD
-
I've had my .177 cal CSI Camo for a little over a month now. I'm very pleased with the purchase. I got the one with the air venturi gas ram and so far it's been worth the money.
-
the breech seal in my bc is in the breech not the barrell.i guess thats the better design?
-
Well whatever the case may be between the two shooters -- I (strangely enough) ended up going with the GAMO Whisper Silent Cat :) Especially at the $172 dollar price tag brand new. Hopefully it performs well on par with the traditional Whisper, of course if any differences are even present excluding the stock. I personally have not seen any members of this forum own a Silent Cat, is this speculation or is it true? Because it'd be awesome if I was the only one, hehe
-Jarred

congrats on the new purchase i love my bc besides the junk gamo scope but it still will put groups of 5 pellets touching if not hole in hole at 10 yrds.
-
Hey Jarred, congrats and welcome!!!! Keep us up to date with how she performs!! I have 4 Gamo's, 3 different model Whispers and a CFX. All have been Turbo Tuned and have the GRT trigger. I never even heard of the Silent Cat!! A little advice. Don't use the alloy pellets from Gamo, UGH, and check your trigger to see if it is plastic. If not, purchase a GRT as soon as possible!!!! Good luck!!!

Thank you :) I sure will, but I'm not new here you know haha -- I've shot my fair share of GAMO's; ex. Viper Express, Big Cat, and a Shadow. So I kinda know what to expect with the Silent Cat (I hope). Yeah I was thinking the Silent Cat was just an ordinary Shadow Fox, which it is but the Silent Cat has the ND52 system. Plus this way was way cheaper than anything else I have found. Also if you must know the website I got the Silent Cat from, it was: http://www.fedtactical.com Though I never ordered from them before, they seem like a legitimate company with exquisite pricing. Yeah I probably won't be using the PBA ammo, but I do have like 35 laying around so it's 50/50 on that hehe ;) I might get the GRT when I have the funds ready, but in the meantime I think I can deal with the unpredictable stock trigger!

Jarred, keep us up to date on how the system performs!! Good luck!!!!

Hehe will do! Out of pure excitement I just ordered up a GRT-III trigger :) So hopefully Bob (Charlie) can do me the honors of presenting me with one of those -- and I hope I'll get it by Thursday when my shooter arrives on Friday -- oh boy I can't wait to see how everything works! I might need a new scope, mount, and base in the future; so I hope I'll be fine with the stock 4x32....crossing my fingers that I don't have to do any long range shooting
Will update when I have something to put up :)

LMAO!!!!!!! I'm getting pumped up and want to go out and kill a couple of cans right now!!!!! When it comes to air gunning we all revert to little kids!!!! I'm worse than my sons!!!!!

It looks like you have yourself a mighty fine rifle there, sir! Right now I'm drooling over that laser and light barrel mount you have. Where'd you get it? Seems that the trigger guard on that model has a slightly tighter tolerance with the GRT III trigger installed than my CSI. I can't really tell from the pics. Let us know how that beast shoots and how that trigger upgrade feels on it! :)
-
Hehe indeed I do :) That laser barrel mount huh? Ah, that's just a regular old "UTG Tri-Rail Barrel Mount". Can be found here: http://www.pyramydair.com/s/a/UTG_Deluxe_Tri-Rail_Barrel_Mount/1785
If you want one for your 1" scope, then this one will fit the bill: http://www.pyramydair.com/s/a/Leapers_Deluxe_Shotgun_Tri-Rail_Barrel_Mount/2668
Yeah, the GRT feels a bit awkward in the trigger guard so I have to hold it a weird way in which it feels slightly uncomfortable to shoot; now I have to snap shoot, meaning quick trigger pulls to get good groups *sigh* The trigger adds a nice addition to this shooter, and definitely makes it much more enjoyable. I haven't gone out to do any more testing, but maybe later today or this coming weekend. Who knows! :)

I've got a plain 'ole Whisper (well, I suppose plain isn't quite fair; it's got a GRT-3, gas ram, wood stock, and 4-16x40AO mil-dot scope) in .177.
It has settled in QUITE nicely after I installed my gas ram and did a tune at the same time. 9 months later and several thousand pellets through her, and I haven't lost any FPS. With JSB exact heavies, I can take a tree rat in the head RELIABLY out to 35 yards, and get 'em with a heart/lung shot out as far as 58 yards (in fact I got one this past weekend at this range).
I had some side-to-side barrel play issues awhile back, but I've found that so long as I keep the breach seal in good shape (replace frequently; I've put in three new ones in this timeframe with the shooting I've done) the Whisper remains very accurate.
Take care of her, and I'm sure you'll enjoy her for years to come!!!
