: H&N vs. Beeman Crow Mags + Misses
: Mebits February 11, 2010, 10:01:01 AM

So, a couple of topics. First, I was missing too many birds. Something was wrong. So, I put a box out at 20 yrds and put 4 dots on it. I shot a 6 shot group. It was a small box (pellets from Pyramyd), but still, 5 shots up almost 2 1/4" and left maybe 1 1/4". One was off the box. Maybe a hold issue or just a flyer. In any case, that would explain missed birds. 2" high is too much.

So, I adjusted the sites. I got some tight groups as I was bringing my poi in closer to the dot. Finally, I shot a 5 shot group about 1/4" off the dot and nearly all touching. That works for me. I expect to get on the score board tomorrow.

So, I was getting low on pellets as I mentioned and ordered some H&N's from Pyramyd on Monday. They got here today. They were cheaper than the Beemans and they apparently are manufactured by the same folks.

Since I was already siting and I had one dot with no holes within 1 1/2", I figured that I'd try the H&N's.

First shot: left 1" and down 3/8". Huh!

Second shot: On the upper left of the dot. Alrighty then!

Third shot: top of the dot. Hmmmm...

4th shot: on the dot.

5th shot touching the top of hole #2.

I'm thinking that these pellets will do just fine...

What scope are you using?  How many shots have you taken with that scope on your rifle?  Maybe the scope is done?

It could also just be the scope design.

With some  scopes, after making adjustments for elevation or windage, they need a few shots of the gun to jolt the rectical tube to settle into final postion.

All my Bushnels and Tascos on my powder burners, and the Gamo and Leapers scopes, all "walk" a couple of shots to where they finally settle into position after a re-adjustment.

The only one that doesn't do that is my Sightron. With Sightrons, the elevation/windage adjustment threads don't just rest against the side or top of the retical tube with a spring pushing back on the oposite side of the tube as most scopes do, they are actually locked to the tube.

I have been shooting the H&N make of the Crow Mag.   In .177,  using scope.   Quite accurate.  3/8ths groups at 20 yards. Pellets touching.   If using scope and you have open sights on your AG try shooting without the scope and see if the groups improve.

I'm using the stock Gamo scope and I've fired about 1300 shots through it.

I'm figuring that the scope is the weak link, but given those last 10 shots, I'm hoping that the flyer was due to hold or pellet and not scope. I could be wrong, however.

Alas, no iron sights.

I must say, the whole reason for the BC was to get the whole set up with scope. My eyes are not good enough to kill sparrows at any range with iron sights. I hate being over 40!

If I do anything, I'll probably scope the old Ben/Sher...then again, the slow economy is brining the prices down on some pretty nice guns...

Cripes...you guys have infected me!

Since you`re using the original "package" Gamo scope......that could be the weak link. Time to cough up some dough and buy a better aftermarket scope.....may I suggest a Bushnell Banner or Trophy 3X9-40mm AO or a 4X12-40mm AO ? Install the new scope and if the problem still exists you know the Gamo scope is still good....swap it back on and start testing different pellets and/or open the airgun to have a look inside. The new scope WILL be used later....guarantee the Gamo scope`s going to malfunction sooner or later.
