Just wondering if anyone has had their hands on one of these since they've become available.... and if you did what's your take ???
I keep looking at it and am really tempted to get one but I'd really like to have some indication of "real world" fps numbers.......
I did see one post on another forum from a new owner who gave amazing numbers, but that's only one gun and I'd like to make sure his gun isn't a fluke.....

Well, emailed Mike Melick and got my answers. Mike is such a nice guy, he got back to me right away. Thanks again Mike....
Jeff
-
Well Jeff are you gonna share your findings with us inquiring minds would like to know?
-
Sorry bout that....... Mike told me that with 27 grain pellets they were averaging in the mid to high 500 fps range and with Beeman Lasers (which are 17.7 grain) they were averaging around 770 fps. He also said that these were averages and that each rifle differed a bit, which one would of course expect.

those arnt bad # I wonder what the 20gr FTT's would run in this rifle?
-
By the way thanks Jeff for the info, I wonder if the bigger pellet has tamed the shot cycle down any ?
-
Funny you should mention the FTS pellets, I was curious also :) ............... I was just in the "Library" using the Pellet Energy Calculator and these are the results....
For the 19.5 gr FTS pellets I took a guess and figured they might fly around 700 fps..... that came out to an fpe of 21.22
As for the other pellet weights that Mike mentioned here are the FPE #'s
17.7 gr pellet @ 770 fps = 23.2 fpe
27 gr pellet @ 590 fps = 20.87 fpe
I agree, not bad numbers. I'm thinking of getting one but have some thinking to do. I keep thinking that my .22 Condor is currently giving me 46 fpe with Kodiaks,, 62 fpe with 28 gr Eunjins and 64 fpe with 32 gr Sam Yangs..... and giving me ragged hole groups with those numbers.... so I'm trying to decide if there's any hunting advantage for me in ordering the .25 cal B-28.
I don't own any .25 cal springers and it would be nice to have one but I'm not sure what to do. I also keep thinking about the "soon to be in stock" .25 cal Marauder which I's also like to get...... Hmmmm,,, what to do ???
AS for taming down the shot cycle I didn't ask about that and Mike didn't mention,,, good point though..

I too have been fighting the .25cal vs 22cal for hunting situations and have been told by others with more knowledge than I that spring guns dont really have enough power to push these pellets, its called the .25cal 25yrd rule or 25-25 in a springer cause thier only good for short range in this cal, PCP's on the other hand I've been told the 25cal really shines PCP's have enough power to push these pellets. But I like you I'm very curious about this caliber. I've been told time an time again that the.22cal out performs it but I still want one.
-
Seems you and I are in the same quandry :)
Another option I keep thinking about would be a very simple solution for me..... I can get a .25 cal L/W barrel from Tony @ "Talon Tunes" for just under $200 bucks. With that barrel in hand it would take me a whole 5 minutes to swap out the .22 barrel currently on my Condor and replace it with the .25 cal. :emoticon:
That option would give me the best of both worlds, the ability to choose which caliber to run whenever I want and with power that's available to me with the Condor I would be able to push those .25 cal slugs at some impressive fps numbers :)
Hmmm,,,, have to dwell on this :)
Funny thing is though,,,,, even though the "Air Force Option" sounds like the logical choice for me for some reason I'm still drooling over that B-28 . This sport is so addicting it's sickening :emoticon:

If it were me and I had a gun capable of doing a BBl swap like that I'd be in heaven, but the switching in an out would probly get old, thus the purpose of another rifle sure is tempting, so here again when I get a set up I like I don't like to mess with it cause ya know how hard it can be to get it back but IMO the PCP is the only way to go in 25 if ya want to get any range out of it!
-
Yeah, I'm just like you,,,, my .22 Condor is set up so sweet that I know I would hate to mess with it even though the transition is a breeze, that is exactly what's keeping me from just ordering the .25 barrel.....
As for the PCP being the best platform for the .25... I agree. Perhaps I'll just wait for the .25 Marauder to come out :)

I think I'm gonna do the same my GD M- Rod fully tuned w/LW BBL .22cal should be comming soon so I may just have him build me another one in .25cal and save myself alot of trouble!
-
Sounds like a plan.
Just out of curiosity,,,, what does GD charge to do his magic on an MRod ???
Jeff
-
Well to do a full tune with a Lothar Walther barrel 802$ but that includes the gun as well and shipped
-
I think the barrel is like 200$ the tune is a 158$ then shipping he was charging 410$ for the rifle
-
Ok thanks.... I know he does great work but $800 is just a tad out of my reach....
If I went with GD I would just want the stock Crosman rifle (barrel) and have him tune that....
Thanks for the info.....
Jeff
-
Well he'll do that, the reason mine was so much from him was I also bought the rifle off of him to do the work on, he is an autherized Croamsn dealer as well. if you just want the factory BBL he'll make sure you get a good BBl on a tuned rifle from him!
-
The reason the Lothar Wather BBL are so desired on these guns is because they'll shoot just about any pellet you want out of them accurately as where the Crosman BBL's can be very pellet fussy
-
Thanks for the info :)
Maybe by the time the .25's come out I'll have the extra $ for the L/W barrel, it would be nice to have more pellet flexibility....
Jeff
-
I still think i would just have him throw in an extra Crosman barrel. I am really wanting a 25 marauder, but think that one of the "not good enough" .22 or .177 crosman barrels in the same box with a magazine or two would be "good enough" for me.

I took my .25 caliber B28 out for a quick chrony test today. It was only a bit over 20 degrees out in southwestern Indiana this morning so I only ran (1) 5 shot string with each pellet listed. The muzzle of the B28 was approximately 6 feet from the muzzle. It is far too cold to set up and do any accuracy testing.
JSB Exact King 25.4 grain pellet - 612 fps/ 21.1 fpe
Beeman Silver Arrow 24.3 grain pellet - 609 fps/ 20 fpe
Beeman Silver Bear 26.42 grain pellet - 608 fps/ 21.69 fpe
Chinese 25.6 grain pellet - 599 fps/ 20.4 fpe
I was really hoping to get up around 25 fpe with the .25 caliber B28. Perhaps because it was so cold and that the gun has less than 30-40 pellets through it may account for the low numbers. Or maybe I am just expecting a bit more than the B28 is capable of with the .25 caliber pellets. I think I remember Mike Mileck stating he estimated these .25 caliber B28's to achieve about 21-22 fpe in a thread a few months back. If my gun is the norm then he was right on the money. I'll get the B28 broken in when warmer weather gets here in a month of so and after 500-1000 pellets I'll chrony her again and see if velocity improves and which pellets prove to be the most accurate. I've also got a custom spring compressor ordered and I'm looking forward learning how to take these springers apart and learning how to tune one for smoother shooting...this B28 is the harshest springer I have shot besides a Gamo Hunter Extreme. There is a significant difference between the B28 and my .22 RWS 350 which it is copied after but I have around 1500+ pellets shot through 350 so far. Still, I do not remember the RWS 350 being quite as violent throughout it's shot cycle.
-
Enjoyed your post.... I've been considering getting a .25 cal B-28 but was waiting for some "real world" fps numbers to come out......
Jeff
-
At that FPS wouldn't the trajectory of those heavy pellets look like a basketball? I mean .25 is intriguing but isn't it pushing the gun a little far? I'm just not sure of a springer for hunting that would have limited range (that is just a guesstimate, I try and keep all my shots at short range except for the little critters).
-
I was hoping the .25 B28 would give better numbers than that but it is just about what MM said the numbers would be. I think I'd rather wait and see what kind of numbers the new Trail XL 1100 puts out in .25
Early reports have the XL pushing 14.3 gr .22 cal pellets around 925 fps which is very impressive indeed.... will be interesting to see the numbers in .25 cal....

That is pretty good! I may have to save my $$$ for one :)
(Though I really want a Cometa of some sort)
-
I would agree atchman2. None of the .25 caliber springers have the trajectory of the more powerful .177, .20, or 22 caliber spring guns. Even the most powerful of the .25 springers are lucky to break the 700 fps mark with the 25-27 grain pellets and some will not do that unless someone has altered them to such an extent they are no longer an actual example of the factory gun. At least this is what reputable professional writers/reviewers have reported. But I also know some examples do exceed the norm...but my B28 does not. There is only so much a springer can do unless it is made so large the dimensions start to border on the absurd. While I am sure many are quite good shots at 75+ yards with their large powerful .25 calibers I would think the rainbow trajectory would make extended range hits difficult. A PCP would be the way to go in my mind for hurling the big .25 caliber projectiles at ranges longer than 40 or 50 yards as they are much more powerful. The B28 I have seems to be running about 50-60 fps slower than the more powerful stock springers. Hopefully it will settle in close to the 650 fps range. I may have to have it tuned. Still I think it should prove good out to 30 yards or so and the reason I bought the .25 caliber isn't because I needed it...it was because I wanted it. I like to shoot and experiment with all types of guns. It's a hobby I take enjoyment out of. I'm not just all about "my gun is more powerful than yours so it must be better". I just purchased (2) QB-78s last week in both .22 and .177 caliber and they are great fun. When the wife is gone I shoot them in the house due to their low power. I will soon purchase a HW50s and someday I will stumble across a .25 Webley Patriot/Crow Magnum on a used gun rack and shall make it mine. My wife thinks I'm nuts...she may be right.
-
Just having them to shoot is cool. I just know that when I put heavy pellets into my lighter guns they rainbow like crazy.
-
I read somewhere that the BSA Lightning xl got better numbers than that with FTS. I wanted one of the b's in .25 cal but I think I'll wait to see what the mrod does. The weight to power ratio just isn't there for me to spend the money
