I was just wondering if any of my GTA Brothers are in this crazy profession. I have been a Mapper for almost 24 years myself. snookman

Not here, - but frankly that always did interest me - just never followed up on it.

I dont know much about it but I always thought it would be fun. It sounds like a lot of travel in all kinds of terrain. Am I close?I have a love for topo maps. I would wallpaper my room with them!

Yes Vinny, you are exactly right. The Land Surveyor gathers the data in the field to create topo maps. I have been in every habitat that Florida has to offer, from the mangrove islands of the Florida keys , the saw grass plains of the everglades, the cypress swamp, the high longleaf pine scrub of the panhandle, and crack town in the inner city jungle. Personally I would rather be in a swamp. LOL. Three of the four men on Mount Rushmore were surveyors at one point in their lives. The job isn't always easy, but it is always a good challenge. Took a topo class in College when I was studing to be a draftsman/tech illistrator. Having an early love of maps, I like the drawing aspect of it, but the field work was something else. Part of the course was we had to pair off and make a topo map of part of the campus which was rather hilly.
Neither my partner or I cared much for math, so we picked the football field ! :D

It sounds like a great job. I'm sure it has its bad points too, but all in all I think it would be fun. Was it me or did my guidence councelor just suck?

It has been an interesting ride over the last 24 years. Unfortunately, with the collapse in the construction and real estate market, Surveying has taken a major hit. I have been laid off twice in the last 18 months. We use to work 60+ hours a week, 80 not uncommon, but now ???? Who knows, the great depression didn't last forever. We measure the world one step at a time. snookman
