If you had to pick 3 firearms for Self-Defence, Hunting, and Home Defence. What would your selections be? Include Calibers also if you want.
I seperated Self Defence from Home Defence because the thinking on Self Defence is portability and concealment if needed. However if you want to combine the 2 in your responses feel free to so so. And a short comment on why you made your particular choices.
I lean towards 12 guage shotguns. .223 semi-auto rifles. .22 long rifle pistols and rifles.
-
Mike this is too easy.A 12 guage shotgun could certainly serve as a versatile tool for all purposes. (if you could only have one gun this would be a smart choice.) For a defense pistol, I like a 1911 in .45acp.For my third choice I would want a .22 rimfire rifle.Of course with being limited to just these three I probably wouldn't go elk or moose hunting.I could make do I suppose if I could add a 4th choice for big game and longer shots. That would be a good rifle in 30-06.
-
sure,.....
self-defense/home defense? ....my sig 200 in 45acp or my 1911 in 45acvp.
hunting..?
shotgun, 12 guage, medium length barrel, prefereblly bennelli.
longun,....m1a in 308............
-
Don't do any hunting, but for the rest:
My mossberg shotgun would do well for the home defense, as would the Mini14
Haven't carried yet, but have a .38spl which should suffice (although a compact Kimber would be nicer if I could ever afford one) :)
-
Personal defense is a toss-up. I have a Dan Wesson .357 Magnum but it's limited to 6 shots. Of course, it would hopefully not take any, but maybe one shot to get out of a situation. I took the carry class and got my licenses with a Beretta 92FS 9mm. With +P ammo, that is about the smallest caliber I'd use for personal defense.
Home defense would have to be a 12ga pump, preferably short barrel. There's something aboutthe sound of chambering that would put enough fear in an intruder (unless drugged up)that they would not wish to find out what that noise came from. And at night in a dark room, you are bound to hit your target.
Hunting??? I have a Remington 742BDL in 30-06 but I wouldlean moretoward a lighter all-aroundshooter like a Remington 700 in 270 with good glass.
Happy Shooting!!!!

Home defense/ self defense = Colt 1911 .45. This gun would do fine in both categories.
Hunting. Weatherby Mark V 270 weatherby mag. 12 gauge browning gold..
-
Carry gun.
Not that I can hit anything with a pistol, but I'd like one of my brother's Colt 1911.
Home defense.
Any one of my Mossbergs with 3/4, or 1 ounce trap loads for home defence. At indoor ranges they act like a slug, but with less risk of over penitration hazard of slugs, or buckshot.
Hunting.
If I can only have one gun - a Savage in .243. Good range of bullet sizes and choices that do well on Woodchucks, Yotes, and Deer in this kind of country.
Paul.
-
HK USP .45 - A pistol that's hard to miss with and built like a tank.
Rem 870 Pump (modded) - They are just too much fun and can be devastating.
Any good .308 bolt action - I like my Weatherby varmint barreled version. Heavy but accurate.
-
Self defense hiking in the woods - a .357 MAG, home defense .32 revolver and/or a 12 ga - self defense "out 'n about" my .32 cal revolver. - (I very rarely carry one around town, pepper spray instead)
-
My choices would be:
For personal defense/home defense Kahr Model in .40 caliber PM4044N[/b] (3" Barrel)
Black polymer frame, matte blackened stainless steel slide with Tritium night sights
For home defense/bird hunting/ deer hunting and other big game a 12 gauge shotgun with interchangeable barrels.
A bolt action .22 rim fire, maybe a CZ or a Ruger 77/22.
No one thing is perfect for every thing but these three would let me do most things.

Self defense and home defense is the FN FNP 40 cal. loaded with 135 gr blue glacier rounds for the home. They are the ones that are a copper jacket filled with the little tiny lead balls. They will only penetrate about 10 inches and completely explode in the target. They are nasty. For the street cary I switch to the Hornady tap hollow points. They hit hard and dont over penetrate. Its light, compact, very comfortable to carry concealed (yes I have a liscence for that) and holds 14 rounds + 1 in the hole. Recovers fast if you need the 2nd shot.
Havent done any hunting with a long rifle.
And if the Stuff really hits the fan and I need to really defend the house my Benelli M4 12 gauge will do the trick. 7 3 in rounds or 8 2 3/4. Semi auto ghost ring sights. Its nice in quick situations.
Then if they want to hole up out in the yard out of shot gun range and hekle me I got the PSL and the 188 head stamped steel core rounds. Those are really scary rounds. Have 2 cases for a rainy day. I figure that would keep their heads down till the boys in blue show up.

Can't miss with a 12 guage...:)
-
12 guage pump
My Baretta 92 FS
My bolt action .22 RIFLE
-
12 ga. pump = the universal weapon. I have an olderBrowning BPS short barrel as my primary, but I am looking for something more tactical.
Ruger GP100. I don't have a modern automatic big bore, although a couple are on my wish list. I can hit whatever I want with the .357, though, and it always goes off.
Ruger Mini-30, spray and pray, only for when the Red Army parachutes into the yard.
I would always want my 10/22, but for small game I can get by easily with air powered guns. I have a safe full of backups but these are the essential PBs.

Can't miss with a 12 guage...:)
You must have never shot trap, skeet or sporting clays.
Maybe my gun is just defective. LOL
-
Hope you never encounter an intruder THAT small or THAT fast. (http://../jscripts/tiny_mce/plugins/emotions/images/smiley-surprised.gif)
If you do, just drop your gun, resistance is futile. LOL
-
ForHome defence, my model 65 357 Magnum loaded with 38 Special hard cast Keith cast bullets SWC.
A Double barrel 12 GA. Shotgun with 7 1/2 shot..
For Street defence my Walther PPks ! with two additional magazines. And if I expect serious resistance my Colt 45 cal. Gold Cup with four additional magazines.
For Survival defence my 45 cal. Gold Cup, Ruger 10/22 with six+ magazines, 7.62x51 M1A with ten magazines
The 10/22 will be my work horse, a .22 can take out game up to and including deer. ammo is cheap and easy to carry !

No James, I have never shot skeet. And the only experience I have with fire arms is when I was in the service. But believe me if someone is within 20 feet of me, I wiill not miss...:) If that does not work then I also keep a baseball bat next to my bedstand as eell..:)
-
That's too many Bill, you have to limit it to three. It becomes much harder that way.
-
The bedroom-Taurus (Judge) 1st rd buckshot followed by 4-45LC 2nd 12ga. browning SxS 3" w buckshot 3rd Model 70 Win,270 140gr Hornady mag.

Dang Big Bill ....your loaded for bear. Whose gonna carry all your ammo?
Having read the replies it seems that the majority agree on the 12 guage round. The .38/ .357 and .45 acp/.40 in hand guns. And rifles in the 30.06/ .308 family and .223. And the reliable .22 long rifle cartridge. Pretty sound thinking. These rounds are most likely the most widely available in the U.S. If not the world.
-
Sounds good Bogey but the limitation posed was three. It gets really hard when you have to decide to give up the shotgun, or the .22 or the highpower.
-
Well Mike,
I have a Tactical vest that holds 6 - 20 round magazines for the M1A, and two magazines for the 45 a.c.p.
Everything depends on how far from your base camp you intend to go. But ounce your out of ammo, your dead. And if engaged in a firefight with a group, you better have all of your ammo at hand.

James,
"......You must have never shot trap, skeet or sporting clays.
Maybe my gun is just defective. LOL ...."
You just haven't gotten all the "misses" out of the gun yet. keep shooting, you'll get more and more of them out so you can get to where all the hits come out instead !!! :D

Mike, I have given that a lot of consideration lately. In order of importance
1) Remington 870 Express 12 gage shotgun (two barrels, the 18" cylinder on it for defense, the 28" modified barrel to change for hunting)
2) Glock 19 9mm semiautomatic pistol
3) Kel-Tec Sub 2000 9 mm folding carbine rifle
I lucked into the first two, a generous brother and a good friend who had an extra - he decided that he needed 10 mm guns.
So I have a compromise in some ways with the 9 mm round, but I think a good one. I have a lot of ammo, including variety - 00 buck, #4 buck, and birdshot in several loads.
Some hot pistol loads, and bunches of good old 115 gr JHP. The pistol and the rifle are also for fun, and I can afford to shoot the cheap FMJ rounds.
I have eight Glock magazines, both the pistol and carbine rifle can take them, and the 33 rounders are loaded up with hot rounds.
And this entire armory has set me back less than a thousand dollars (would be well under $2K for new items). My 3000 rounds of 9 and 20 boxes of 12 ga cost more. I figure if the zombies come, I will be able to reload and keep firing, and given my ability to hit birds, I will need a lot of shells to avoid hunger.
-
The commonality and price of the 9mm round is hard to argue. I also like the Glock double stack magazines. Cheap, reliable, and a lot of rounds in a compact form.
But when you get into the arguments about the best round, it's endless.
I love my 10/22 rifle, but it is really not much of a defender if you are talking stopping bad guys and zombies. So then, my compromise is for ammo you can afford to shoot and stock, and still have enough power to take down a big animal.
-
Remember Jerry !
The humble .22 cal. has dispatched more human animals than any other caliber !
With my 10/22 I can place very accurate shots out to 100+ yards, fatally accurate !
And the ammo is so light and cheap :p
Even the GREAT Polar Bear has been dispatched with a .22 cal, rifle :o
I can take out one zombie, with one shot, all day long !
My heavy weapons are for long range dangerous targets and dinner !

Yes, Bill - I have a Ruger 10/22 with a scope, Butler 25 round mags, and I just got back from WM with some more Federal 550 round bulk packs ($14.47!). The .22 would be #4 on my list. But that little Kel-Tec Sub 2000 is a lot more deadly at 100 yds than a .22. I am really happy with it. It weighs 4 pounds, folds to 16" long, and it can be carried in a laptop bag with a bunch of big mags. The portability of the gun is a factor I consider...Kel-Tec makes a .22 with the same design concept. Check it out:
