About a week ago I started putting out my suet cake feeders in the hopes of attracting shootable numbers of starlings to the yard. It only took a day or so for the birds to find the suet feeders. Started with a couple of yellowbeaks visiting the feeders and with each passing day there are more and more of them.
I haven't been shooting them yet,,,, I wanted to give them time to get familiar with the station and feel comfortable. Well, I just looked out my window and they certainly are "comfortable" enough !! There is at least 2 dozen starlings out there greedily pecking away at the suet cakes. I think it's time to start harvesting some starlings :)
A friend of mine, who lives around the corner, recently told me how he attracted starlings to his yard using the suet feeders so I thought I'd give it a try. On a daily basis I put out a variety of bird seed, cracked corn, etc, but I got very few starlings showing up. Now with these suet feeders I can't believe how many there are out there. I have a recipe to make the suet cakes, which I posted here a while back, but I found out that Home Depot sells a long sleeve of suet cakes, like 6 in a sleeve, and it works out to something like 90 cents a cake. Each cake lasts me about 2 or 3 days. Great bait. :)
I can't shoot today, it's just raining to hard, but I've got a good supply of suet cakes so if tomorrow is a nice day the shooting will begin.
If you're looking to attract starlings then give the suet cakes a try. The birds seem to prefer the cakes that have crushed peanuts in them.

Where would I look in home depot? Do they have a bird feeder section?

Look in the "Outdoor and Gardening" section,,, that's where the Home Depot near me has all their bird feeders and seed and such. The one by me has a pretty good selection of stuff and really good prices on seed. They sell a 40 lb bag of mixed bird seed for $8 bucks which is a good price.
I just remembered that "Sams Club" and "Costco" also have good prices on seed, and I believe they also sell those sleeves of suet cakes.
