Question to the guru's - Since I finally have a rifle that I actually intend to keep "open" sights on, can someone refresh my aging brain on our definition of open sights? If it's in the various rule posts, I flat out missed it and apologize!!!
Not a big deal regardless off the answer but I was hoping to start competing on a regular basis this week but a shipping snafu has my Williams sight stuck several days away. The rifle I was going to use currently has a 1x red dot mounted. Now that the weather is good enough for this wimp to to get outside I was just wondering if the 1x red dot is within the rules or if I should just wait until next week.
Sorry to post this in the results thread, but I thought someone might see it sooner.

JQR, for me a Red Dot on 1X would be similar to open sights. So go for it.

Can't wait to see how you guys do this week. Wish I could join ya, but my 25yd position is still snowbound. Heavy rains this weekend should thaw it out in time for next week. Happy shooting!

Weapon: 1322 Carbine 1x Red Dot
Pellet: JSB 13.4 .22
Dist/Pos: 25y Standing/Offhand
Score 98
This was shot at about 26.5 yards so that I could stand out of the rain, target got pretty wet. I let it dry some before scanning but still tough to see some of the shots.
I struggled on the top 2 with the red dot, even with the rain the dot was getting almost totally washed out. Took me 11 shots to think of it but then "hey Jeff. maybe the battery is low, you've used this sight out in full daylight a bunch of times). Next 9 shots were much easier on the eyes :-)
I know it ain't pretty but it works. Hopefully it will be at least one fewer color in the near future.

Nice shooting while standing Jeff! Posting your target motivated me to get outside and take a stab at it. Plopped my cooler in the snow, took a warmup shot at a pellet tin attached to the logs I prop my targets on and fired all 20 nearly as fast as I could... what can I say, I was excited to be shootin'. Not my best score, but who cares, it was fun. I wish I could figure out why I shoot to the left while sitting, maybe one day.
What I found the most interesting is I didn't adjust the elevation at all from the 10m I shot earlier this week.
RWS Diana 34, open sights
RWS Superdome 0.177
25yd, sitting.
41F, overcast, no wind

Thanks Mark.
I can't sit (FT Style or anything close to it) and shoot. I'm sure I could teach myself but.... I propabably won't ;-)
I do spend a lot of time shooting offhand and have been extending my distances. I also think the red dot helped. I tried this a while back with true open sights and didn't do so well.

I may join ya standing next week, mostly out of laziness. I don't want to adjust my sights for different matches and not having to carry my cooler outside would just make things simpler... we'll see though. Sometimes its nice to just sit outside and fire away in the fresh air.

Mark and JQR....excellent Open Sights shooting...especially standing, that's hard to do. I do mine sitting with both elbows on my knees....that gives me some stablility.
