: pindog2000 March 11, 2010, 12:19:48 PM
I been here for a few months and collected a few airguns along the way lol"7" and me and my buddy want to do some small game hunting were both in the desert of california lancaster/palmdale and we want to obtain a hunting license I went online and found out u need to test for one but it seem for firearms and not airguns so what's the process we need to take and I know we have a lead free law that appies to firearms airguns are exempt. Just curious I plan on buying a .22 long or magnum rimfire in a month or two after I get my bam b-40 project in gear thanks for any advise fellas...cliff

You are still going to have to have a hunting license to hunt small game with an air rifle.  You have to find a hunter safety course in your area.

You need the license, and the Hunter Safety Course, in CA.

It is legal to take small game under normal rules in CA with air guns. I am not an expert on all the fine print, but ground squirrel and jackrabbit are pretty much open season as long as you have the above pre-requesites.

Lead free is kind of a gray arearegarding thecondor zones. You need to go here http://www.dfg.ca.gov/wildlife/hunting/condor/ (http://www.dfg.ca.gov/wildlife/hunting/condor/)and figure it out. While non-firearms are specifically exempted in some print, like in Ft. Hunter-Liggett, there are proposals to include the word "pellet" and to change the verbiage to "barrel" instead of "firearm". This is obviously targets airguns but I don't believe this is law.

Look at the terminology here. Remember that "pellet" is used by many to refer to shotgun pellets, not us. But when they get down to "this includes", everything listed is powder-burning.

The Commission has defined projectiles so that the prohibited bullets and other

projectiles can be understood. A “projectile” is defined as
any bullet, ball, sabot, slug,

buckshot or other device which is expelled from a firearm through a barrel by force.

Additionally, for hunting nongame, projectiles include “shot” and “pellets”; lead in

these projectiles is prohibited as well.

It will be illegal to use any projectile that contains more than 1 percent lead for hunting

big game or nongame within the affected area. This includes centerfire as well as blackpowder/

muzzle-loader, and rimfire projectiles.

Uh oh.  I used to go to Ft. Hunter-Liggett every year with my air rifle to take brush rabbit.  I hope I wasn't breaking any laws.  I took the HSC at the Santa Clara Sherrif's Dept. and carry a valid license, but the laws for taking small game with air rifles just seem so dang complicated.
