I've never owned an airgun pistol, therefore I know very little about them. I would like feedback as to what would be a good pistol to get. I'm not looking to spend a bunch of money, but I would like one that shoots hard enough to effectively hunt with, at close distances, and most importantly, that is accurate. If you could give approximate $$$ amount for your suggestion, that would be appreciated.

The crosman 1377 cheap easy to mod plenty stuff to mod and plenty of power and sweet
-
pindog's right- the Crosman 1377 delivers more gun for $55 than anything out there. A few simple mods you can do yourself in less than an hour with screwdriver and pliers will give you a fistful of accurate power.
The trigger is easily tweaked with stuff you have around the house (fine sandpaper, screwdrivers, pliers). You will want to do that right away.
It is a multi-pump- the more you pump, the harder it shoots- and that is not for everyone, but at 7 pumps out of the box you will have a pretty tough and accuratelittle pistol.
Unfortunately, that's only the beginning... there are zillions of mods and aftermarket accessories you can delve into later. I don't like the pinchy cocking forearm and that is the next thing to go in my opinion. I wish they would raise the price $5 and add a little more beef to the forearm, but maybe that's just me.
Then there are flat top pistons, barrels, mounts, stocks... this is a frequently hotrodded gun and that is another plus, because there is a ton of info and how-tos on the web, including right here, on these little beasts. It is the perfect starter budget pistol and can take pests, and some small game, just as it comes.

I used to have one of these when I was a kid of about 12... loved that pistol!!! of course it was all stock but it was a fine hard shooter from what I remember.... dunno what ever happend to that gun... my Ma took it from me because my step brother(who was 3 years older then me...) took it from me one day and shot a cow in the butt.... did she punish him??? nope she took MY gun from ME..... Anyways... they are great little guns

Sounds like a great buy and I defenitely appreciate the quick responses. I'm not at all opposed to a pump pistol but what would you suggest for a co2 powered pistol, such as the 2240? What would be the advantages/disadvantages of both styles.
Thanks again for all your replies. This site has been a great resource as I am quickly getting addicted to the very sport I was so addicted to as a youngster.

well the 22xx guns are awsome as well as 13xx guns
both easily modded to whatever your heart desires
the 13xx are nice as they are self contained
the 22xx are co2 and are nice if its warm out but if it drops below 50 it gets funky on the gas release due to loss in pressure
both are nice and powerful and the 22xx can be converted to hpa quite easily
for less than 150 you can build a hpa 22xx with a 14 inch bbl that hits hard
i have had many of both and loved them both
now i also have a P1 kinda pricey but it is spring powered and under 20 yards smallgame (rats, squirrels and with good shots rabbits) are history
and oh yeah i have a Mac1 LD being delived ups shows monday but thats a wholenother ballgame with an LD

+1 on the Crosman 1377. Just got finished modding one and if I have to choose only one for backyard sniping around of 40 yards, I'll pick the 1377 in a heartbeat. Power can be adjusted for indoor and outdoor pest control to prevent collateral damage.
P.S. I like the exercise I get on pumping her and plinking with 5 pumps with sub 500fps is easy due to modded valve and flat top.
-
I have a 1377 and its ok for a plink gun or as a survival gun. For me as a hunting pistol I would go with a hopped up 2240 with a 14" barrel holo sight of some sort and a mod. You'll get up there in price but you'll be done. If you like to tinker buy the base gun and a boss valve for 12 gram carts and work on the rest of the stuff as you get more airgun money. JMO.

Aw c'mon guys.....I read all these posts then went to PA and pushed the button on a 1377. Never owned an air pistol and this looks like a good one for starters. Thanks...I think.. :D

Hey Wood glad we lure you down the rabbit hole. Happy you could join us lol
-
Now we got you $uckered. Do you need my parts list to make her shoot 725fps with 10 pumps using 7.9 CPHP?
-
switch it to .22 now and make 20 fpe on 20 pumps ;)
-
Bentong....I may take you up on that offer....Thanks

How come cheap guns with double numbers always end up costing an arm and a leg once they've been improved? 1377, 2240 and, last but certainly not least, 10/22. :D
-
how quiet is the 1377. Is it quiet enough to shoot nutters while sitting in a treestand waiting for deer?
-
It can be made as loud as you slap your index finger with your palm...that is a very hard slap.
-
How quiet is it stock, out of the box? How much money does it take to make it as quiet as possible?
-
How's about a custom roy weid (mountainair)2250xt bulk filled /hpa carbine pushing 745 fps on .14.3 gr. .22 cal pellets? Lol yep can't wait for my lil mini beast.
-
Colt 1911? (another double number gun you can drop several times the initial cost into)
-
I wouldn't want to shoot it un-modified in a treestand. Measures can be taken, but out of the box it would have a little more snap than I would want. Unless you prefer nutters to venison...
-
I just pushed the go button myself on a 1377 i have never owned a pistol and have been looking and reading for months and will most definitly be needing some advise for hoping this thing up.
-
I agree with the general attitude towards the 1377. I got 3 of them in every iteration possible. have my old (20 years, that is how good they are) top slider 1377, got a newer one a year ago and made it a survival rifle by putting the flat top conversion, big wooden forearm, stronger spring, adjustable trigger and a 14 inch .22 barrel with a long breach and a 3-9x40 (this one shoots CP 14.3 at 770 fps at 30 pumps! but i ude it at 12 always, getting 600 fps. the pumping is always easy, all the way to 30 if needed (no raccoons by me...), and then i just bough a new one that got a set of rb drips in walnut, is stock and looks beautiful. cant go wrong with that one.
