im only speaking for myself  but im finding it kinda hard to put my marauder down and pick up any of my springers.i do still put a few pellets down range here and there but not as many since i got my mrod

I like to shoot them both....but with a springer I can stand there and shoot over 120 shots at different targets, and don`t worry about the air level.  Just break the barrel, load, aim and squeeze.  But for 60 to 80 yard targets...that`s where the PCPs come in!!!!!  Even on a rest....my springers (And me) can only hit one target out of maybe 6 shots.

It's probably the cost of the Marauder and even more so the cost of the Discovery that made PCP airguns more affordable for many.  More of a working mans game now.

I am going through a phase, I guess, but I haven't been picking the Marauder up as much as lately. I don't get time for extended shooting sessions, don't want to visit the carbon fiber deity every time I feel like taking a few shots. There is a springer by every door in the house and I have been plinking with them and the P3 more than the PCP. They also make me a better shooter, when I do choose the sweet Marauder. Heck, I want another one in .25, but it's not the every day gun these days.
: Don't think it is just you.
: ribbonstone March 16, 2010, 11:16:22 AM
There will always be springers and springer shooters, just as there are confirmed MSP shooters, ... but the cost difference between PCP and springer is getting blurred now, which was traditionally a diving point between the two classes of airguns.

I like stick shift manual transmissions... it's getting harder and harder to find (we count count the electronic "paddle shifts" as manuals just like we can't lump recoiless springers along side recoiling springers).  Don't think they really do anything better than an automatic transmission and certainly have their draw backs;  I just prefer them.

Springers seem to be like that...you perfer them.  Don't think they do anything better than PCP's and also have their drawbacks, but if it is what you perfer, then keep on shooting them.

-----
Side bar on stick shifts:
Majority of inner-city  urban "punk kids" won't steal a stick shift... they don't now how to drive them.

It's just a matter of taste.  Sometimes I grab the C1 springer or the NPSS gas ram or go with a PCP.  Some shooting sessions will include more than one kind of rifle.  More than enough enjoyment from all platforms!!  But for ease and accuracy my $ are on the PCPs.

: RE: Don't think it is just you.
: Remo March 16, 2010, 11:21:13 AM
Always preferred stick shifts myself, too.  That is until I got caught several times on the Cross Bronx Expressway in serious traffic.

: djmyers March 16, 2010, 11:52:10 AM
I'm having a blast with my springers! Learning alot about how they work. The pcp seems like they have a higher start up and for my kind of 100 + round shooting sessions pcp would mean I need to stay close to home or drive the 200 yds to the swamp to get all the stuff down there to shoot that much. I will own one eventually because of the power and accuracy. The dark side is calling but will have to call back later.

: joeblow March 16, 2010, 12:09:58 PM
I hear you guys the dark side is calling me as well. the force is strong in those ones. just wanted to start a thread to get us talking some more. seems like the gta is a little slow the past couple of weeks or so .must be the cabin fever? I guess if one wants to be a well rounded air gunner we have to be proficient at all the angles ie... springer,PCP,multi-pump,single stroke. they all have there place.

: shadow March 16, 2010, 12:13:33 PM
Oh no not true I have one PCP and several CO2's pistola's and the rest are spring driven ladies. I love the challenge of hunting with springers and always will. Ed
: Funny you should mention that....
: daved March 16, 2010, 12:36:18 PM
I just sold off ALL my PCP's, all because of one little old Diana 34.  I've been trying springers since I went Dark Side some 3 or 4 years ago, none of them lasted more than a few weeks, they all just reminded me of why I went to the Dark Side in the first place.  Then I got this 34 in trade, and suddenly, I'm really liking shooting a springer!  Next thing you know, all the PCP's are gone, even my S200, and the 34 has been joined by a Beeman R9, and there's a TX 200 on the way, all in .177.  Also have a CFX, so it's a nice, symmetrical collection, 2 nice break barrels and 2 nice underlevers :-).  At first, I was thinking I'd just gone totally around the bend, but then I realized I was just bored with the PCP's.  Like you said, they're great for precision hole making, but after awhile, the challenge just isn't there.  So I'd have to say that not EVERYONE is going Dark Side, or even staying there :-).  Later.

Dave,

I'm with you.  I think I will alway love springers even if they are "old school!"  They just seem so "real".  I enjoy the nuance of each one.  The pellet it likes and the way it likes to be held.  Heck I even like the fact that some days I can't miss and the next I can't hit anything.  PCPs just seem more frustrating to me because after a while I get *_*_*_*_*_*ed if I'm not one holing.  Its like that - the PCP can take the fun and relaxation out of just honest shooting.

In fact I'm really liking my 40+ year old springers and honestly I'm loving my cheap B7 which seriously shoots as accurate with open sights as my HW30s!

Back when I was totally into mountain biking and aluminum frames were coming on strong...we'd say yeah but steel is real.  Well I feel the same with springers and PCPs.  Then again I remember forking out $2,500 for a Titanium road bike and $2,500 for an aluminum downhill bike in the same year!  LOL  But I always went back to my chomoly Bridgestone to "keep it real."  LOL

Springers forever!

Dave,

Also, I know how you feel about your 34.  I bought one that was a refurb and had been hacked at by at least two previous owners.  Droop.  Man this was way more than droop!  It could shoot around a corner as someone said.

I "recalibrated" the barrel  (don't ask what barabarian tools I used) and it was shooting awesome.  Then at a fun shoot Tom Gore from Vortek dropped in one of his PG2 kits and all I can say is it now shoots superduperawesome!  I was reluctant to install the Vortek when Tom first brought them to some of the shoots but then I figured I'd try one out and ordered one from his website.  Well Tom saw I ordered it and said he'd bring it to the upcoming fun shoot.  In literally 10 minutes he had the PG2 in it and buttoned back up.  It is easily my most accurate rifle right now!

I agree Dave that not all are going DarkSide. I'm sure for a lot of shooting enthusiasts, our air rifles are only one slice of the pie in the types of guns that get shot. Some shooters only shoot air guns and that's fine. Some of us like to shoot 'em all. In my case the attraction to the power and accuracy that the PCP brings to the table is not strong enough to lure me in. I have some very nice springers that shoot very accurately and with adequate power for when I want to take them hunting. The step-up in power many PCP's offer over my springers can be easily satisfied with my rimfire rifles. In other words for me personally my .22 rimfire shooting good select loads, can be relied upon to fill the niche in power and accuracy that a good quality PCP rifle does for some. Shucks I just figgured that if I needed more than 27fpe for anything  that I would shoot with an airgun, then rimfire's got you covered. Like Aaron I say "Long live the springer".

I enjoy both. Today was walking the roads alongside the farm fields with the Evanix Blizzard and three extra loaded clips so I had 40 shots ready. Checking for skunks, porcupines and raccoons. We nail them as soon as we see them and with the snow melting off and temps in the warm 40's it is going. Now is the time they start wandering about in the daytime early and late. So the Lab and I walked a couple miles up and down watching for movement so we could stop them before they get to our place. Nice to have the extra follow up shots ready to go quickly.

Earlier had the County Agent out checking out shelter belt plans for the place. They come out and plant Lodgepole Pines and Scotch pines, do the trenching, planting and put down weed block fabric all for a dollar a tree. Just fine, a lot less work than us doing it and we know it is done right from the start. We carried the RWS 350 Magnum and nailed some rocks and limbs as we walked and measured. Now he is looking seriously at getting a springer for the gophers and pests at his farm.

Both have their place and are fun to shoot.

Yeah, I dropped a Vortek kit in mine, too, and I also installed a new TO-6 trigger.  The Vortek is great, the jury's still out on the TO-6 :-).  Regardless, great little guns, had I bought one of these back when I got my first Diana, a 350, I think my airgun history would be very different .  Later.

Funny, I just bought a new car and was REALLY wanting a manual transmission.  Well as luck turned out I just couldn't find exactly what I wanted, so I bought an automatic, but....you can drop it into "S" and shift with the paddle shifters.  Oddly enough I find myself in regular old "D" most of the time.

On another subject, I've owned quite a few airguns, many PCP's, and many springers.  And now I have only two PCP's, a Marauder and an S200, but my springer collection is growing:)

Man, it seems like people have forgotten that there is a another path besides springers and PCPs.
You want old school and self contained?
You want little recoil and easy shooting?
You can have it all with pumpers!  :)

"To each his own," said the Old Maid as she kissed the cow.

Shoot what you like. Me, I don't care for PCP's. Even SSP's (which is why I'm selling that mighty FINE 953 on the CLASSIFIEDS). Tried 'em, don't care for 'em. Springers I like. Just personal. Only thing I don't like about PCP's is that a LOT of owners feel like it's their purpose on earth to be sure everybody buys one. Typical thread - "I'm thinking about buying a new springer. I have about a hundred dollars in my budget. What would you suggest?" First reply - "Oh, dude, you need to buy a Peenumatic Arms Super Compressor Deluxe. Everyone who's anyone simply loves them. And they are only $1,300 this week at HighToneArms.com. Trust me. You'll love it." Well, almost like that. Or they imply that you shoot springers 'cause you're cheap or poor, etc. Glad PCP's are more affordable. Shoot what you like. It's YOUR air gun.

I haven't migrated to the Dark Side as of yet. But, that doesn't stop me from lusting over one of those power house pieces. Someday I'll stumble over an AirForce or Evanix deal I can't pass on. Or maybe an MRod or Disco. Then I'll have to get all of the accessories too. I'm VERY happy with my 760 MPP and my springer arsenal. I enjoy shooting, whatever I use. Springer, MPP, powder burner, crossbow, whatever. I just enjoy shooting.

Happy Shooting!!!!

As a PCP guy that went full power HPA with all the fixings just as I got back into this a couple years ago, I can tell you that I absolutely find pleasure in sitting down with my springers and pumpers. Technically I only own 1 springer right now and that one is a whooping Crosman Raven. We call it my son's but I shoot more than he does. Don't quite trust him on the indoor basement range yet. Basic safety is not the issue, his aim worries me. You can't miss by much on my range without putting holes in something the wife would notice.

With any luck there will be a new springer on it's way soon, something a little nicer than the Raven.

It's all a matter of what an individual likes.  I started with a pumper as a kid.  Got a hand me down CO2 and didn't shoot for 25 years.  Then broke out the CO2 when the Chippers started digging burrows into the basement.  When the CO2 seals failed, I bought a springer (Remington Vantage).  That's when my learning curve accelerated...because the Remington was just NOT accurate.

Today, I still have the Remington that I did a home Super Tune on....also have a Gamo Whisper, as well as a Discovery (177) and Maurader (22) as well as a Crosman NPSS (22 cal).  I love them all.  Shoot all of them daily.  Each one has a different "personality" that if you know and understand, allow you to get great groups in the center of the bull...or take out a chipper on the first shot.   For me, each of these weapons has a purpose...short range, medium range, or long range....and that's how I use em.  They all have their advantages and disadvantages.

Does one rifle fill all the requirements...well, that depends on what you are doing with them...for me, I like them all and use them for different things depending on their and my capabilities.

Variety is the spice of life, and luckily we live in a country that allows us to enjoy the spice.

Sounds like Ford Verse Chevy..I've owned both and like both, But I know which is more bang for the buck and easier to fix or make faster. :p

There will always be a debate..,But if you can... why not try to own both, then make up your mind. Just likes there is two side to a story, there are pros and cons to both.

With that said.... My Disco got it's first kill yesterday morning on a crow @ 30 yards ontop a light pole on only 1000psi. ! chest shot jsb 15.8 grains

The reason I was low on Air was because was shooting targets in the garage when I heard the Caw Caw. He flew about 20 feet and sky bombed to the ground like a airplane that had been shot down :D
