: cut off barrel
: chortdraw March 19, 2010, 02:12:20 PM
Is there a rule of thumb or some magic length to bob a barrel??  I am getting ready to work on my Rem 1200 and I want to cut the barrel and add a nice light weight break on it.  So first I have to cut and crown the barrel. I have all ready done a real make over on the stock. I need some answers from the experienced choppers!!........thanks ...Chortdraw

personaly I would push a pellet down the barrel and feel for tight spots and try to find one around the length I was wanting to chop the barrel off at... then carefully mark the beginning and end of the tight spot and cutjust a touch pastthe end of the tight mark.... that way after trueing it up and recrowning I know I have a "choke" at the muzzle which according to the guru's will help give you the best accuracy...

they say modern springers get to full speed in the first 7-10 inches of barrel so I would prolly hope for a tight spot between that and 14 inches somewhere LOL

YMMV and its just what I am thinking lol... I have not chopped an AG barrel yet but have been doing alot of asking questions and research for my upcoming build and adding that to my gunsmithing backgroud thats what I plan to do when I cut and recrown my project.....

Thats what I did to 3 of my rifles. My 440 and 89 I cut at 12.5 inches, the Mendosa barrel's bore opened up at 10.25 inches and I cut a quarter inch past that. Recrowned all 3 with electric drill using dremel type stone dipped in valve grinding compound and then brass round head screw with same compound. Very happy with results. 89's a bear to cock now. Got most of my info here reading Tim and Howie's posts. Mark

Thank for the information guys. I was hoping to cut it around 13 inches..( my lucky #) so if the pellet is good there I guess thats where I will give it a try. Want to see how good I can get this to shoot so when I get ready to do a .22 cal for my hunting I will have a good idea of what is going on. Having fun so far and have been learning a lot. Easy to keep an old man amused...grin!!

Ok, chopped the barrel to 13 inches and crowned it and temporally reinstalled the front sight and also the rear sight. At 10 yds it holds a good group and the pellets are cutting a nice round hole so I guess it is not getting any interference at the Muzzle. Now to decide what brake to mount on it? I like the balance so I am thinking a alum. brake?
