Got $200 burning a hole in my wallet to purchase a rifle (.22) for general shooting and wondered which you would choose, model 34P or Whisper (spring version) both in same price range? I ask, because I've never shot either one.
Greg

Well, - can't speak for the 34P, don't have one. However, today I took my Phantom & Whisper over to the club, and did some rainy day shooting. Both did just fine, Whisper was "right on" - except this one's a .17 cal.
-
I own a 34 Panther in .22 and have shot several whispers...... my advice is to get the the 34 Panther. It has a very nice trigger, the synthetic stock is very nice and comfortable and in my opinion the overall quality is far above that of the GAMO whisper. I'm not saying the whisper is a bad rifle, I'm just saying my opinion is that the 34P wins in every category.

(http://../jscripts/tiny_mce/plugins/emotions/images/smiley-smile.gif)Hi Greg, I'mpartial to Diana/RWS, like the fit and finish of their manufacturing. I would go with a RWS 34P, I think almost everyone here on the GTA started with a 34, one variant or the Panther. I owned two 34's one wood stocked which I sold and regret it, and the Panther in .22cal. She shoots real smooth and the velocity is on the mark, around 700fps, normal for the .22cal.......Bill(http://../jscripts/tiny_mce/plugins/emotions/images/smiley-cool.gif)
-
I agree with Jeff and Bill,cause i have one(34p)and the (350p).
-
I would choose the 34P. Powerful and German quality air rifle
-
Well Greg ,Seems as though the consensious is to go for the Diana,.......and my opinion is no different. Forget the "chamo" altogether!!! The Diana 34 is a much better built and designed rifle,...period!!! But let me toss this idea at ya,... To save a few extra bucks and save up for a kick-butt scope set up, you might look at the Ruger air-hawk line or the Xisico B-25's. Sure the furniture ain't as nice as the RWS-Diana's,.. But the design is far superior to the Whisper, and a simple DIY lube tune makes them that much better. It's really a "no-brainner". Go with the Diana-34 clones. tjk

I should add that I also own a Ruger Blackhawk in .177 caliber, which is the chinese clone of the 34 Panther and it is indeed a really excellent copy of the 34P. I loved my RWS Panther .22 so much that I just had to have one in .177 caliber. I saw that sportsmansguide was selling the Ruger Blackhawk for $89 bucks ($79 with a $10 coupon) and knowing it was a copy of the 34P I decided to give it a try figuring all I'd be losing was $79 bucks. Anyway, long story short....... the Blackhawk shot as nice as the 34P, it's trigger was just as nice, the accuracy was just as good, the synthetic stock was just as nice...... suffice it to say it was a great copy that I kept and still enjoy shooting.
Like Thomas said, it's easy to lube tune yourself, but if you get one from Best Airgun Mike Mellick will do that for you, or you can order a fully tuned one from Mike and his flying dragon website. Like Thomas said, that would give you more money to get a nicer, higher end scope.
BTW..... sportsmansguide is still selling them for $89 bucks and if you're a "club member" you can use one of the readily available $10 off coupons like I did and get it for a whopping $79 bucks. Just thought I'd mention it :)

Thanks for the" back up" Jeff!!! Like you, I'd hate to see a newer member of the AG fraternity get 'had' by the entry level BS. LMFAO!!!! Yeah Greg, go with the 34 or its clones and you'll never look back to what you 'think' you might have passed up on. I promise you that Bro' !! You won't be disappointed. tjk
-
I agree with Jeff. tthe 34p is a very nice shooter once they are broken in. And today you will be lucky to get a new Gamo Whisper with the good old trigger that you can mod. The new ones are crap. It is a no brainer....:)
-
Get the 34. Great gun AND you can get parts.
-
It's already been said, but even a decent used RWS34P is a better investment. It is the only choice here, seriously.
-
you got to be kidding me comparing a gamo whisper to a 34
-
Kim, since the GTA is for beginner air gunners as well as seasoned ones like you and many other members it is ok if someone ask a question about the Whisper and RWS.. How would they ever know unless some one was kind enough to explain it to them. Heck I did not know a Gamo from a Air Arms when I first started...:) Becourteous and help full if you can. It is all about contributing, sharing and learning.
-
All,
Ok, a 34 or it's clone it shall be! Being new to this sport I look to the seasoned members of this forum for guidance and advice. It sure is nice to have a Great group of folks willing to take the time to steer a novice in right direction. Again, thanks for the response and all your help.

I apologize if anyone took offense to my response I did not mean it that way. I'm just agreeing with the other posters that the 34 is a much superior gun.
-
34P I would say. I have the wood stocked version with a JM tune kit and man, its the smoothest cocking and most accurate springer I have ever seen. I moved to the dark side and sold all my springers, BUT, I will keep this one for ever.
-
I will agree with you 100% on that one Rupesh. Mine is the compact pro, (same power plant with shorter barel). Very smooth cocking and shooting cycle indeed. Love mine so much I put a custom stock around her...:)
-
That's a lovely stock Gene! Wish one day we I can get one of these that Timmy makes....
This is what mine does to bunnies and pigeons everytime i point it in their direction.

If it was me I would bypass the clones and get a "real" 34. There is just something about the real thing that makes it better.
My Whisper has been an excellent rifle. Accurate to the point where it almost isn't fun to shoot, light and smooth. I carry it whenever I'm scouting for squirrels since it weighs so little. And yes it is quiet, but a tuned 34 isn't much louder IMHO.
Go for the real thing you won't regret it! Even if you get tired of it you'll get most of your money out of it.
-
Rupesh, the stocks do not make the gun:) They are purdy but the credit goes to RWS. They have some great guns out there. As long as they do what you need them to do everything is cool..:)
Here is what my RWS 34 does best...:)
-
The only thing the Whisper may have over the 34P is that it is lighter. Although I think the .22 cal. version is heavier than the .177 version. Having said that, I can't imagine anything in it's price class that is better than the 34 Panther. As a matter of fact Pyramyd Air now has it on sale for $195.17. After the 10% discount it's $175.65. That's less than what I paid for mine almost 2 years ago. By the way, if you do get the 34P, the first pellet I recommend you try is the JSB Express 14.3 grain. In addition to being the most consistently accurate pellet in my rifle (although every rifle, including every 34P is different) they are the cleanest pellets I have ever seen. Crosman Premiers tend to do well in this rifle also, but they are the dirtiest pellets I've ever used. You literally need to scrub that stuff off your hands. The RWS Super H and Superdomes are also worth trying.
-
Absolutely Gene! Mine does 1 hole groups at 10 mtrs off a bench, scoped! What else can one ask? :)
