I had a good day shooting. Between the Grackles and cow birds, I had plenty of shooting. My favorite shooting for today was when I spotted a cowbird way up in a tree. I was getting an angle on him when I saw a grackle circle around behind me over the house. I thought, cowbird, grackle, cowbird? Then the grackle came right over the house behind me, over my head about 4 feet up and landed in a tree 15 feet from me. Well, you know the answer, GRACKLE! What was so great about the shot was that he was with a friend. Right after I shot, here come the other one over my head in the same flight pattern. It landed in about 20 ft from me in another tree. I pulled back the bolt on the Mrod and I was empty. I went in the house and loaded up the mag, looked out the window and then shot his partner. Wow, that was one patient bird.
Now here is a question for you. I saw a crow in the bottom of my father in laws property. I was in the truck and had the Mrod. I said, what the heck, try it. I drove the truck to withing 40 yards and stopped. He moved another 15 yards back in a tree and stopped. I dialed in on him with the Maudy and let an CPHP fly and it hit with a solid thwack. Now it did not drop one the spot but fluttered up and away. I watched it as it was flying. It was dazed and flying very erratic. It would circle a little this way and a little that way and was loosing altitude when I lost site of it over the neighbors field and woods. My question is this. Would you count that as a kill as I did not see it go down but I know it will and die? I like to have my game in my hand before I clam it. If my GTA family gives me the green light on the kill, then my score for today would be six cowbirds, six grackles and 1 crow
Let me know.
Pics coming soon.

Paul, that's a tough, iffy call. Maybe it'll die, but if it gets eaten by another critter, can it still be considered your kill ? Who knows.
Personally, I don't count my "thwack'ers" dead unless I sees 'em dead. The rest are flyers, or runners. The only exception I've ever done was a Squirrel I stood over after it was shot and saw the 22 cal through and through in it's head, a few minutes later to have it turn zomby and see it stagger off into the brush. With a hole clean through it's head and that much blood loss, I doubt it survived long enough for another critter to kill it off.
45 yards and using a CPHP, plus Crow feathers are pretty tough to get through. How's about just scoring half a crow for hearing the thwack and seeing the weaving flying. :D :D

Ifen I had the Lonestar on the crow shot with my 21.1grn Kodiaks, it would a been a dead drop. Took a chance with the CPHP.

Nice shooting day anyway!

Crow is still alive.
Little old lady found it, took it in and nursed it back to heath.
Crow is now on the look-out for you. Who said revenge is sweet?
-
Died of Chinese led poisoning before she could save it.
-
Okay, count it.
-
It will be on my "unofficial" count and not on GTA.

Great shooting and pics bro now on the Crow....that will always be your decision in the end. :) Ed

Wow! I would change the subject title to Outstanding Day. Great shooting and you have 2 really nice looking shooters there.
-
Excellent shooting....12 varmint birds and an iffy Crow with the M-Rod. For me, I only count the ones I can get my hands on.... I had two Starlings limp off into the high grass and bushes before I could get to them...I didn`t count them as kills....but they`re definitely goners.
