When I'm shooting in the woods I often stand next to a tree to support my rifle. I often thought it might be handy to have a short swivel type handle of some sort where a bipod would normally go that I could hold against the tree to steady the barrel. Any of you inventors out there ever hear or think of such a device?

Hello Jim,
There is the crossed sticks, the Bi Pod, or the Mono Pod, a single stick or tall walking stick.
I have even seen shooters use a tripod to steady their rifles.
You might use a long or extended bi pod mounted to your rifle to rest against the trees ?

Thanks Bill. I'm definately looking at those telescoping monopods. I was just thinking outside the box about a short 6 - 8 inch semi-flat arm that you could swing out at an any angle and lean on it against a tree. Or maybe a long strap with velcro that you could wrap tight around a tree. That would leave you with a free hand to adjust your scope yet give you enough mobility to line up your shot. I might have to prototype something to see if it would work.
btw, what are the crossed sticks you referred to?

He's talking about Varmint Al's Bifur Pod. They're pretty simple to make and work fairly well.

Many years ago I made a few sets of those Bifur sticks for Woodchuck hunting in hay feilds. The last set I made has better camo and several pivot bolt hole choices to change height depending on feild conditions. Fully opened and an extra bolt through the extra holes to lock it open, they not only make a good standing gun rest, but also walking stick and support for holding my 12 power binos steady when glassing far off areas. I never go out without them.
You can lean them against a tree for even more support.
Here's a pic of them holding my Whisper up.
