Not trying to be a SA but why is it most airgun forums are on old discussion board platforms?
-
My SA answer would be cause we would rather shoot our air guns than site and revamp a working site. I'm not a web guy so I wouldn't have an educated answer. The thing I like about this site is when a new respomse is posted that topic moves to the top of the page. I don't have to scroll through the entire page looking for the thread. Ask Gene_SC he is the owner.

Well Bill the answer to that question is that it is simple and pretty much straight forward. Frankly some of the new ones seem to be to complicated...:) To many buttons to push ect..:) But I am always open for suggestions from the GTA members. They basically oversee the GTA forums. If you have an example please by all means giveus a link. Thanks Gene

A very successful online tractor forum. Check out the number of people online at anyone time. Kinda staggers the mind!
Mind you I'm not complaining here. Just that I haven't seen these older formats used much any more but it seems most all AG forums are still on them. I just found it interesting. I guess that is what I was getting at mainly.

Air guns first - everything else is secondary, if it matters at all.

The old adage "If it works, don't fix it" may ring true here. I personally don't see any issues with the present forum. I WOULD however point out that there is at least one very useful tool of the newer forum formats. And that's the chat box. Sometimes folksmay be in the midst of a repair/tune or even about to push the button on a purchase and be in need of more immediate assistance and advice. A chat box would help out a lot in these cases. Or have members set up and list their messenger accountsso someone could contact them immediately if they are online.
Just a couple of thoughts from the peanut gallery. (http://../jscripts/tiny_mce/plugins/emotions/images/smiley-tongue-out.gif)
Happy Shooting!!!!

Now that I said this I have looked around the site and it does have most of the "options" of the newer ones...PM...etc. But the look of it makes it seem dated although it really isn't. My bad I guess. I guess my only 'gripe' is how the replies feather out. I've readjusted to the format and am getting better at using it. But some of the other AG forums....yikes.

I'm a member of many different forums and find this a very convenient and useful model ?
Every post is put up instantly, and can be responded to or discussed ?
And if you want to find out who's online, just click "users online", in the left hand corner under the "Welcome" your "log on name", It list everyone that is online.
Every style of forum requires a learning curve ! In my opinion this is the easiest to use, if you take the time to learn it !
And the number of members has very little to do with the forums platform. It has more to do with the type of administrators and membership that it has ! Many forums have large membership rosters, but very few members on line at any one time.

Agreed on both points! This one seems to be working well, but yeah, real-time chat without clicking links would be good for some things.
The back and forth on some parts of this thread (http://thread-view.asp?tid=27411&mid=215877#M215877) (look at the time stamps) are crying out for a chat box lol

I think its fine just the way it is.

Bill, the GTA forums can be viewed in a number of ways. At top right hand you can choose your view. Also in your control panel you can set the default view. It takes a bit of time like Big Bill said to learn the new ropes...:)

I've always been interested in the airguns on the form along with the Hunting Gate then the forum platform. Ed

I like the format of the GTA I can't stand the set up of the yellow or a few others, besides all the cool guys are here.

I use SMF (Simple Machines Forum) on a couple of sites. It's open source and very similar in looks to this forum but is constantly updated with features that can be added or ignored. I actually like this forum style quite well. The links and images inserts is a bit complicated for some people. Also, one new feature I just added to mine was the ability to show videos inside the post. This plug in recognizes 100s of video link formats and automatically formats an embedded player. It's quite nice. I fear switching to a new forum would be very difficult if one wanted to retain all of the old posts. that would take some serious scripting to pull off. I can't say I would want to do it.
