Greets all.
I know that subject is a little crazy.. i'm not trying to compare a PCP to a springer.. but
something I did find fascinating -- going on Paul Capello's video information.. muzzle
sound of
1. Marauder: about 84.7 dB
2. TX200: about 86 dB
Personally I found that astonishing. I understand the TX is a shrouded barrel design.. but
its still a powerful springer.
Anyone with first hand experience care to chime in?

I only have experience with the Marauder (which is very very quiet) but remember that dbs can be a little misleading.
Usually an increase of 3 db is a doubling of intensity.
Second, a more accurate method weights db for frequency, since some sounds are more perceptible than others, even at roughly the same intensity. Air gun specs are generally not weighted for frequency.
My guess is that the TX would sound quite a bit louder than a Marauder in person.

I was shooting a tuned B40 .177 indoors yesterday, along with some other springers and noticed that it was really quiet. No sound meter here, but I thought at the time that I could easily shoot this in the back yard and no one would be the wiser. Guess an actual TX would be at least on a par with it.

I have owned both and the Tx is very quit. At times I even felt the Tx was quiter than the mrod. Of course I no longer have the tx and have just recently added a dpinger to the Mrod so I can't do a side by side for you. That ping can make it seem louder to you. Its right by your head.

thanks all.. i didn't stop to think of the "quality" of the sound -- but the dB numbers caught my interest.
all in all sounds like they're close -- not something I expected!
Now I'll just have to find a TX somewhere to see what it sounds like up close and personal.

It's best to stand at different hearing points. Sounds can be quite dissimilar from behind, beside or ahead of a gun.

Redfeather u r correct on the b40 cause i bought one from mike melick two weeks ago and it was kind of loud when first few shots came out.Now 385 to 400 shots in and not noisy at all ,no twang ,just a pop thats it .mine is the .22 version and a pleasure to shoot.

Yes i shoot in the backyard and i had told my son to walk a little distant and when he came back i ask him did he hear anything he said yes but that it didnt sound like a pellet rifle plus my aunts area is purdy much covered with many trees and other houses and buildings ....jorge

Tough question to answer definitively. There are a few threads and links that do comparison measurements of noise, some for older guns. There are a lot of differences based on how you test and where the sound meter is placed with respect to the muzzle. Here are a couple:

Thanks Anglander. From reading, I'm realizing that sound is hard to quantify.. but I keep thinking.. if the tests are done exactly
the same (aka "Paul Capello" -- i realize its not scientific, but its the same instrument, more or less in the same enviroment) then
at least I have a relative idea of which one is louder -- no?
For example, the only reference I have is a .177 gamo hunter pro -- which ranks a 4 on pyramid air, but sounds like a giant rat
trap went off -- I've *got* to be quieter than that with a TX200, I'd assume.

I don't have a Marauder, but I can say the sound of the pellet hitting the target from my .177 TX is louder than the discharge sound. Keep in mind that this varies with what you're shooting. Steel targets make a loud ping. Pigeons make a solid thwack. Sparrows pop like a firecracker. If you want/need to be very quiet, you'll need to get a silent trap.
On a springer, only the operator can usually hear the spring twang (if there is one). On a PCP, the same is true for the hammer ping. Plus, the body often interprets vibrations as sound. So the gun always sounds louder to you than to somebody standing 10 feet away.
If it helps, I live in the city and use my TX in my back yard without disturbing the neighbors. Those on either side can tell when I'm shooting, but they've never said the sounds bother them. And that's shooting things like steel targets and plywood backstops.
