Doing a little quick research here, and just wondering, what scopes have you actually broken, and what were they attached to when you broke them?
I've only broken one because I found out about springer ratings right after that. It was a Leapers, which, funny, are springer rated. It was on an untuned Walther Force 1000 at the time.

CenterPoint 3x9 40AO on a Remington NPSS. By the way Doc - PA never got back to me on stop hole diameter on the AA TX200. Maybe I should buy elsewhere?

Not to knock PA, but I won't buy from them anymore excepting pellets, and even then I get a little cranky. PAs customer service is the PITS. airgunstation.com and airgunstyle.com both have the TX200 for that same price. http://www.straightshooters.com is $10 less. sportsmans-depot.com $10 less than that! http://www.guns.gb.com has a used one for 200 pounds, which is a little more than $300...
I'd go other places than PA.
-
Thanks for the input. Actually,up until now PA has done fine by me. I've heard other complaints - but never experienced bad service before. It kind of makes you wonder when they won't answer a simple question. I'll see what kind of mood I'm in the end of next week when it's time to make the purchase.

I've broken 2, both the same model Leapers, the old full size side focus 3-12x44 30mm tube without the illuminated reticle. The first one stripped out the side focus internally, wouldn't adjust any more. On the replacement, the elevation turret died. Both were on a variety of springers, including a short time on a Diana 350. In that same year, I had 4 other Leapers scopes, 2 6X Bug Busters and 2 of the 3-12x44 Compacts, all had lousy optics. Haven't bought a Leapers brand scope since then, although I do have 3 Center Points, and they're supposed to come out of the same factory. So far, so good. Later.

Two BSA scopes
3x9 on RWS34: lense came loose
4x12 on RWS 48: half of horional crosshair broke
Gary
-
funny, you both hit on the scopes I am personally least impressed with. Thanks for confirming!

1. Centerpoint 8-16x40 over a RWS 48 .177.

CenterPoint 4x16x40, on a Walther Talon Mag .177. After about one tin of pellets the horizontal crosshair fell off.
-
I've killed a few.
3 Yes, 3 Leapers Tru Strength 4X16 power on my 350.
1 Tasco Golden Antler on a tuned Gamo
Leapers 6X Bug Buster on various low powered springers.
My hunting buddy killed 4 Leapers 4X16's and one 3-12 30 MM True Strengths on his 350 he bought from daved.
-
I broke all my Crosman, Centerpoint and Gamo scopes...all "Package deals". I've replaced most of them with Bushnell Banners....and broke a Banner in under 700 shots. Got a replacement and it have held up pass 1000 shots now.
-
What did you break the Banner on Gamo2? And which Banner?
-
Mamba, looks like you haven't had much good luck with those Leapers! Have you made replacement with anything that worked?
-
Walther Talon/Falcon are tough on scopes, that's why I have one on the way. What did you replace that with?
-
Interesting...you broke the Centerpoint on the 48 and not the one on the 350? Which line of scope, do you know? AR22? Adventure? Power Class?
-
Exchanged the CenterPoint 4x16x40 at Wally World. Use it on my Gamo CFX'S without problems. Did not replace the scope on the Walther Talon yet.
-
I'd be curious to know what you choose for the Talon...that's a scope killer for sure.
Richard
-
I plan to try a Bushnell Banner 4x12x40.
-
Broke one Centerpoint 3-9X40 and a Leapers 3-9X40. The Leapers scope had a lense crack after 20 shots on a Trail NP.
-
Rich,
Both of these on a gas ram 22 Whisper.
A Gamo 3-9 - the crosshairs rotate clockwise with each shot.
A Leapers Accushot 3-12X44 mini swat - won't hold POA for more than 2-3 shots, and won't stay in parralex for more than one shot, turret locks won't stay locked without over-tightening to the point of changing the POI.

Notice how often Leapers comes up here in the discussion! I'm not sure who makes those for Gamo, but my guess is Gamo doesn't make them...
-
A BSA 2-7x44 mounted on an RWS Meisterschutz Pro.177.The entire front bell fell off.It wasn't exactly broken, per se, so I screwed it back in place and it's now on my TF89. So far, it's holding.
-
Thebookdoc, I broke the Banner 3x9-40mm while it was on a Gamo Big Cat. That Banner is probably the 2nd lowest level Banner.....I think Walmart have the lowest level Banner.
-
just loosness on that it seems...not so much a failure... right?
-
How are you judging 'lowest level' banner? I agree completely there are better and worse baners -- some are awesome...but interested as to how you are achieving a grade.
Thanks!
-
I like the banners. I have several myself. but not all were made for airguns...in fact few were!

In this day of cheap scopes poring out of China, my guess is that Gamo can't make them for what little it would cost they to import scopes from China.
I'd like to know who makes the 3-9 AO CenterPoints that are on the Trail XL's ? They look more like a Hawk Airmax than any other scope brand.
Paul.
-
As I mentioned...it wasn't exactly broken. That's as close as I've had to a broken scope.
-
I'm really impressed with my Bannrer 4x12x40. It has eaten about 7000 shots without a problem, and it is compact. I'm looking at a Bushnell Trophy 4x12x40 as my next scope to replace the centerpoint that goes on my 177 CFX. The trophy is also a compact scope.
-
The one I got was from Ganders or D icks sport store....so I'm assuming they're abit of a higher quality than the Walmart scopes....even though they're both called "Banner".
Mine was a basic 3X9-40mm Banner....no AO and/or IR. I've other Banners that have AO, IR and one with AO and IR (If I remember correctly)....so I'm assuming those latter ones are abit of a higher quality.

Before I knew better I went through 3-4 older Bushnell and Weaver scopes approximately 10 years ago trying to scope a RWS 34. These were older cheap models and the 34 did a marvelous job of trashing them. The RWS 34 was my first springer...still have it, great air rifle. It now wears a 3x9-32 Leapers scope which has worked fine. I currently have (9) springers which wear Leapers scopes and except for a basic 4x Leapers that was mounted on a wicked kicking .25 B28 they have all worked fine. The Leapers scope which went the way of the Dinosaurs would not hold zero and had a piece of a mesh looking material shifting around on the lense while shooting the B28. It lasted about 50 shots. Leapers replaced the scope for nothing. I have the exact same scope on a .22 RWS 350 which has worked great for well over a year with about 1800 shots fired. The replacement 4x Leapers scope I mounted on the .25 B28 has only been fired 20-30 times since I mounted it so I'm not sure if the first was defective or if this scope will simply not hold up to the recoil of the .25 B28. I recently purchased a Weihrauch HW50s and Beeman R7 and they are getting all of my attention right now. I mounted Leapers scopes on them due to the excellent customer service I received from Leapers over the scope the B28 ate. I own several Leupold, Nikon, Bushnell Elite...ect, scopes on my powder burners which are great but placing $250-$600 scopes on a short range air rifle seems foolish to me. Well, maybe not foolish...but it would cost me a bunch of money to replace all my springers with higher quality glass. I have a spare 2x7-33 Leupold VX1 in my safe I may put on the R7 just because it is small and the little Beeman is such a sweet air rifle.

An inner lens broke loose in a Leapers 6x32 Red/Green AO Bug Buster. Believe it or not on a XS B3-1 .22 522 fps air gun. Checking with Leapers about it now...Frank

for what it is worth, when you compare products sold at walmart check the box to see if it has in fine print walmarts name and that the model number is exactly the same as one from a better company. Quite a few products walmart sells are similar but have been dumbed down and only available at walmart. With the volume they buy at, they can dictate quality of just about any product from toasters to tools and surely scopes too. I bought a motorguide trolling motor at walmart, that is not listed on the motorguide web site and can not get parts for. John

The first scope failure I ever had back in the mid-nineties was a BSA 3x12 AO airgun scope. I think at the time it started rotating the crosshairs on a Gamo 1250. Since that failure I killed a Bushnell Trophy 6X18AO on an untuned 350 mag. After 1000 shots or so, it would not hold zero. Switched it to a 22 rimfire and the wandering zero problem persisted. Had a Simmons Pro Air 4x12x40AO that also started rotating the crosshairs on another Gamo 1250 but the Simmons Pro Air 6x18x40AO is still in service after nearly 20 years of riding magnum springers. Most recently the three leapers and centerpoint scopes I've tried ALL failed to hold zero for very long on various springers I mounted them on. In each case the windage adjustments just refused to stay where you put them in spite of optically centering the adjustments and locking them down. They liked to wander a bit too much for my taste. No more Leapers or CenterPoints for me.
