I just ran some pellets through my Crosman NPSS 22 and thought I would like opinions on the speed of this gun. All the tests were done at an altitude of 5000 ft here in Prescott. 5 shots....715/722/735/717/720. Is this the norm or is it possible that the seal should be checked? Very accurate shots though.

Forgot to add that these were with 14.3 gr pellets.

Those numbers sound good for an NPSS at sea level. Straightshooters did a test of the NPSS and here is a link to it:

Thanks Perry50, I must have missed this along the way and Thanks to Straightshooter for the information. I downloaded this for future ref. Guess mine is doing what it is supposed to do even at 5000 ft elv. :emoticon:

yea the higher the elevation the less dense the air is so.. yea your guns doing well.

I'd say everything is quite well. Your gun is averaging 721.8 fps for a muzzle energy of 16.54ft lbs. Now that's at your altitude of 5000 feet. A gent named Hector Medina posted over on the Dianawerk forum that you could figure a 2.5% drop in muzzle ENERGY for each 1000 feet in altitude. So you could expect to loose up to 12.5%, but being conservative and figuring you only lost 11% would put your rifle at 18.58 ft lbs at sea level. That would figure out to 764 fps with the 14.3 grain pellets. Since it's accurate, whats 20 or 30 fps?

So when I go squirrel hunting I will be at 6000 ft or better. I better shoot good!! I want to try some heavier pellets also. I am finding this gun is very accurate and seems to be getting better. I do like the NP and the sound of the gun.
-
Out of interest, what pellets were you using? If you want to maximize the retained energy for hunting, you may want to try some with high BC.

I am using CPHP 14.3. Want to try some Crow Mags in 22. I have them in 177 and they do well in my other guns

According to the strasightshooters test of the NPSS, the Beeman FTS (H&N FTT) carries the most energy at 50 yards downrange. I use them in my Trail NP with good results. They would be worth a try.

I will be sure to try them in mine. I need energy at that distance. Our tree rats go very high in the ponderosa pines and most of our shots are long. Thanks for the heads up.
