: Super Streak with Gas Ram
: LongIslandArcher May 10, 2010, 05:25:06 PM
I'm about to convert a Super Streak to a gas ram.  I have the ram; I have the delrin to make the shims (If I have to make shims.  I might be looking at installing the gas ram the way Theoben gas rams are installed - with the tube up inside the piston chamber and the rod against the buttplate); I have the seals coming.  Looks like it's going to be an interesting project.

Does this make it pretty much a Trail XL? I'm under the impression the Super Streak shares the piston chamber with the Trail.

Good luck!

The internal dimensions are the same between the Super Streak and the NP XL.  I just took the Super Streak apart and hit a snag.  The spring guide inside the piston sleeve is contiguous with the top hat.  In order for me to cut away the spring guide, I'd have to pry open the crimps on the piston sleeve between the top hat and the spring guide and I don't want to do that.  I'd rather buy a new NP XL piston sleeve and top hat assembly from Crosman and drop it right into the Super Streak.  I have the gas ram; I just need the piston sleeve.  Anybody got a link where I can get replacement parts for the NP XL?

Send an email to Kim Yaddow at Crosman kyaddow@crosman.com (kyaddow@crosman.com). Or call her at (800)724-7468. If parts are available, she can fix you up!!!! Let us know what ram you got and where and if you get the piston, tophat and what else you needed. I'm interested in converting too. Happy Shooting....and modding!!!!

Thanks, Dave.  I just sent an email to customer service for the parts.  If I don't hear back from them, I'll give Kim a call.  If she can't help me, I'll go to my contact at the executive level there.

Since the XL is designed for a gas ram, how are you going to keep the ram ends centered on their bearing surfaces ? Spring guns don't have the "sockets" to keep the ram ends centered.

Even if you can get the parts from Crosman, will the non-Crosman ram your ordering fit the XL parts ?

The XL's piston has an internal socket bored to fit the end of the ram shaft.  And the rear plug of the XL's reciever is bored to except the end of the ram body. Then there is a thin washer that goes between the plug and the end cap (Crosman calls that cap the "tube cover" in the Super Streak parts).

If one is wanting to save the original Super Streak parts and just do a parts swap, while not modifing existing, or machining new parts,.. not only is a ram of the same dimentions as the XL needed, but I suspect an XL piston, rear plug, and washer will be needed too. And, we just found out they made both plastic and steel "tube covers" for the XL, what else is differant about them ? Is the Super Streak's "tube cover" the same installed length as the XL's ????

You sure like a challange don't ya !   :D

The receiver tube butt cap is concave and the piston ram rod will fit right in there.  I could even machine an aluminum or steel  bushing that the ram rod end will nestle into.  I plan on putting the gas ram body up into the piston sleeve.  I just got an email from Crosman and they said parts won't be available for new air guns until after 1 year.  So, I'm going to have to wait till next March before I can order the NP XL piston sleeve.

If the ram shaft doesn't come with a flaired end, better machine a cup bushing to put that load out on the edges of the tube cap. If you take out the top hat, you may need a cup bushing to take up that missing length anyway. What does the ram supplier say about working length of the ram your planning on using ???

If your putting the ram body into the piston, why do you need an XL piston ?  Won't the ram body fit into a Super Streak piston ???

There's a spring guide rod up inside the piston sleeve.  The guide rod is machined as part of the top hat.  The piston sleeve is crimped around a groove in the steel between the top hat and the guide rod.  I have 3 ft. of PTFE Delrin in 1" dia. that I can use to machine a cup bushing.  I can get my hands on steel and aluminum rods to make a ram rod bushing to spread the load across the entire butt cap.

Kim Yaddow at Crosman was telling me the piston sleeve for the NP XL won't be available till after the rifle's been out for a year.  So, I told her I'd buy a Super Streak piston and I'll just machine the guide rod right off.  It might take a while as there is about 3" of guide rod to chew down with a flat faced boring bit, but I have a heavy duty drill press and a vice to do it in.

Did you notice that installation of the gas ram is included in the price you paid?

Installation by us is included in the price! If installed by us
all internal parts removed for this conversion will be sent back with your gun
We strongly recommend that only our qualified technicians or an experienced. certified airgunsmith remove the metal spring and install the Crosman Nitro Piston.
Serious injury or death can result from improper removal or installation of springs
Removal or installation by anyone other than us voids all manufacturer warranties
Contact customer service for instructions to send us your gun for installation

Installation instructions are not included, and we do not provide phone or email support for self-installation. We STRONGLY recommend that you send your gun to us for professional installation!

Wow, if installation of the gas ram is included in the price, it seems to be a no brainer. Why buy parts and then fabricate and machine other items to fit when the supplier of the gas ram will do it all for the price of the ram?

I didn't buy the gas ram from that link I posted; I got it from my local air gun dealer.  That link is just for anyone else interested in a conversion.  And there is another snag I encountered - the rear spring guide rod.  I'll have to order a new one from Crosman along with the piston sleeve, so I can modify them as required.

I've already taken apart the Super Streak, and I've worked on 7 different airguns already.  I built my own spring compressor and I have a lathe and drill press.

Because the gas ram in that link I posted is for a Walther Falcon, but it will fit in the Super Streak, with modifications to the piston sleeve and rear guide rod.
