: .177 Marauder and hollow point pellets
: Zzyzx May 11, 2010, 05:05:07 AM
In shooting this rifle it is very accurate with the Benjamin Discovery .177 Cal, 10.5 Grains, Hollowpoint pellets.

Does it really shoot hard or fast enough to justify Hollowpoints? Do they really mushroom when hitting a gopher or small animal or am I engaging in wishful thinking here?
I don't mind having the hollowpoints if they actually help but if not I can just get heavy pellets and use them... IF they are as accurate.

So, do I really get any benefit from the hollow point or am I just as well shooting domed heavy pellets in this rifle?

They are made by Crosman. The antimony used in Crosman pellets make them hard. I have yet to hear anyone posting any SIGNIFICANT amount of expansion at any speed/distance. A softer lead hollow point(RWS, Cro-Magnum) will expand significantly and would be a better choice if accurate. I would just stick to heavy domes.

I've tried cphp's and hn crow mags in my 3 best guns. Both left bigger cavities in the plummers putty but were not as accurate as the domed pellets. I use jsb domed pellets out of all 3 and they work very well.

I've not done any real test....but when I shoot the Crosman Premier hollow point and dome pellets into a telephone book and looked at them...not much difference.  Maybe some other softer hollow points from other brands might expand more.

I have tested the CPHP for expansion against predators...  the predators are alot thinner and transfer more energy than the cphp's  but for the money I stick with the cphp's  For hunting I'd go with predators.
