Hello everyone. I found your forum while searching for information on air rifles. Maybe some of you can help me narrow my focus a little quicker.  I am looking for an air rifle that costs less than $300, is not a break barrel, 800-1000 fps, can mount a scope, and is quieter than normal, and has a metal barrel.  I  know this is asking a lot, but with all of the different brands and models out there I could be reading about all of them for a month.
Thanks for your help.  Chuck W. :)

So that means you want either a PCP or pump. Or maybe an underlever?

Welcome aboard the GTA. We have lots of members who will chime in with some ideas. Good luck..

Air guns of Arizona has a German RWS 52 .177 side cocking rifle for a Special price of $279. That is a fixed barrel with a side cocking lever. Very accurate rifle.  Not much available in a fixed barrel for $300 of quality. The RWS is quality at a special price. It is rated at 1100 fps, which means it should shoot in the very high 900's.

I agree with (fnash). The RWS 52 is an excellent quality airgun at a good price. You won't be dissappointed with a Diana rifle. AoA will also inspect and chrony your rifle to ensure it
at least meets factory standards. I would have bought the Diana 52 if it came with a left hand or ambi stock. However, I have the Diana 48 from AoA which is the same gun with a stock for anyone.

What about noise level? Does anyone know how quiet or loud the RWS 52 is?
: Re: Newbie looking for advice
: Mark 611 May 30, 2010, 10:30:15 AM
The RWS 48/52's are loud guns, your asking for a tall order on what your looking for in a spring gun! Gene's right your looking for a PCP gun! the only thing I can tell you is if you want a fixed barrel gun your gonna have to shroud it and even then thier not gonna be whisper quiet, with what your wanting you need to get an M-Rod but look to spend about 800$ for all the fixin's other wise get a Cometa Fenix 400 compact its a break barrel but it 'll do what your looking for! and glad to have you to the forum!

: daveshoot May 30, 2010, 10:45:49 AM

First, to answer the question, that is a great price on a great rifle (the RWS52 from AoA). A good used RWS48 is sure to please as well. Those guns are a little on the heavy side but the payoff is quality throughout.

A TKO or %%*^(()*)%$*% shroud can alleviate noise concerns.

But, why no break-barrels? That would open a lot of doors within your budget (RWS34, Cometa Fenix, tuned B26)? I think there is still a perception that break barrels are somehow intrinsically less accurate, but I think the market has decided otherwise. Break-barrels do seem to offer convenience, safety, and an economy of parts and motions. I know there are reasons to go other directions, just curious to know what yours are.

Thats good thinkin Dave why not a break barrel? another choice would be a Benji Trail NP but thier a break barrel and .22cal only. they come with all the bells an whistles for 229$
: Re: Newbie looking for advice
: cwatson69 May 30, 2010, 12:05:46 PM
Being new to this I was just a little concerned about the accuracy of the break barrel.  I am a pretty picky individual and if I went with a break barrel I would want something that was well built.

Knowing that, with what I was looking for originally but instead consider a break barrel - what would be a good quality air rifle?  What is the Nitro Piston?

Everyone here is great!

then my brother ur going to be looking more than $300 you dont want break barrel and u want 800 fps and quiet????all i can say m-rod and add more cash to the pot. :emoticon:

The NP is like a gas strut that you see in a hatch back window of a car, thiers no spring torque, viabration, or noise, and you don't have to worrie about fituge like you do with metal spring.

Now that you will entertain thoughts of a break barrel check out the Diana 34. Great gun, a touch over $200, easy to work on if you want and lots of after market parts.
: RE: Newbie looking for advice
: daveshoot May 30, 2010, 03:51:12 PM

I would highly recommend the RWS34. I don't think the accuracy difference, if any, between a break barrel and a side or under cocker is appreciable. With the 34 you get maybe the best German rifle under $300 and nothing else to buy (like scuba gear or pumps) except pellets.

I also like the Cometa break barrels. They are a lot of quality for the money.

You might run another thread, or add to this one, on what the group thinks about break barrels for accuracy, safety, and convenience. There are more choices in this category than any other, and there is a reason for that.

If you do open up to break barrell's the selection is endless,I've seen no diff. in acc. & something like a whisper fit's your bill,800f.p.s.& super soft in noise, just need a little tuneing an mine stack's pellet's at 25 yard's(just hard to find steel trigger's now)& like I said ton's more out there?

The Daisy 22SG is a .22 cal., fixed barrel, single-shot, multi-pump that gets around 600 fps with 10 pumps.  It is very accurate and PyramydAir has them with a scope for around $100.  It is also very very quiet.

: pindog2000 May 30, 2010, 04:59:41 PM
The majority of the guys /gals on this forum have some sort of break barrel and most wont part with them so it depends on what u want to use it for?shooting targets or hunting? for targets most will agree a .177 cal rifle and for hunting .22 cal now u mentioned quiet and 800 fps i would consider the trail series or the npss series(pretty much the same) but if you want a good shooting break barrel that has good quality i say like most would say the rws 34 and if u like synth stock there is the panther series u can get either .22 or .177 cal now!! if u want to save some cash like most do i would get a ruger black/airhawk which is a rws 34 clone but ruger only makes 177 cals.Dont want break barrel??then the rws 52,48,or 54 might be the ticket but then unless u get a refurb or find someone selling them on the clssified  may be at  or over the 300 buck mark .there are plenty options out there  just do like i did take ur time ask plenty questions do ur research and we are here to help so dont worry 8)
: Re: Newbie looking for advice
: pindog2000 May 30, 2010, 05:03:41 PM
but i think if u get past the break barrel thing i would look at the rws 34 or the trail or npss thats ur best bet for under $300 with the specs u want other than break barrel if not there are under levers side levers and pcp/co2
: Re: Newbie looking for advice

What I like so far in the break barrel are the RWS Model 34 Meisterschütze Pro and the Benjamin Trail NP Hardwood.  I like everything about the Trail NP except the stock.  I'm not sure how I would like that or not.  I also like the RWS 34 Meisterschütze Pro.  It would be better if it was in a .22, but .177 would be fine also.  I'm mainly going to be using it for killing squirrels at about 30 yards. (That's the distance from my wife's bird feeders to the corner of the house.)
: Re: Newbie looking for advice
: fnash May 30, 2010, 05:37:51 PM
For the AoA special price of 279, I still think the Diana 52 would be your best bet right now. Going by your quoted $300.

i would get the pro (sux not in .22)but i think the 350 comes in a pro compact but dont quote me  but its over $300

the rws 48/52 now thats a keeper wish i had one lol but il stick with my maple stock b40 for now

The 52 would be a great rifle. When I first got into airguns, I got a mod. 48 which is the same as a 52 except it has a plain stock .Mine has been a great rifle but     Then I got a 34, guess which one gets shot the most.  The  better handeling rifle is going to be the one. Better meaning, safety, ease of loading, weight, etc. My 34 sees much more range time.

stoeger x20 for the 800+ FPS for around 140 to 180 depending on the combo...or the X50 for 1100+ fpsfor 279 bones

crossman phantom for 80 bones rated for 1000 fps with 7.9 grain lead pellets(would guess 800+ in real world) my son just bought one from wally world and its a VERY solid looking/feeling gun (have not got a chance to really test it yet to give a in depth review but I think we will be very happy with it...)

the Benji superstreak that was posted in the bargain gate for 180 for an 1100+FPS gun seems to be a great buy... heck it comes with a 70 dollar scope!!! that right now is probably the best bang for the buck I see going on!!!!(thinking about ordering one and having it sent to my dads house to keep my GF from kicking me to the curb..... LOL)

I would have to say they are not very quiet but that can be fixed with a shroud/brake I would imagine...

if you want truly quiet go with a silent cat for around 180.... 800+fps and a bit cheaper then the whisper(same gun different stock mostly lol) thought to be honest GAMO's are alittle over priced and need some TLC to get where they should be(but giving any pellet rifle some TLC is part of the fun :) ).... but heck when shooting dads whisper you hear the pellet hitting more then you hear anything else... from just a few yards downrange the gun makes little/no noise

I continue to think that one of two deals are the best...

1) A Cometa Fusion. There is one in the classifieds for $260

2) A TF89, for $120, with a $150 Gene tune.

These are the best rifles I have.

: tjk May 31, 2010, 05:55:45 AM
For your particular use, I'd recommend the Diana 34 in .22 cal. Very accurate out to your bird feeder range and will have no problems dispatching squirrel with good shot placement. The plain old 34 is cheaper than the compact carbine models and will probably be more accurate out to 30 yards with the longer barrel. Plus you always have the iron sights for close up shots!!  You being new to the AG sport, I wouldn't bother with a 350 just yet. They are super powerful and very accurate,.....but not an easy rifle to shoot either. The 34 is a timeless classic, and tuned later on, it will become one of your favorite air-rifles. It's one of mine for sure as well as most 34 owners. One reason you don't see them offered in the classifieds much. Yeah, the 34 "woody" in .22 cal would be the ideal setup for your application!!! Best Wishes and welcome to the GTA, tjk

I agree with tjk the rws 34 is a good shooter and a classic at the time i opted for a ruger air hawk cause money was a issue its a clone of the rws 34 but i made of for it twice a month later when the funds was right and in order i got a rws 350p in .22 cal and then recently i had my  ruger tuned and camoed and had my 350p tuned by mr shadow(see the shop forum) i think pretty much ur best bet is the rws 34 you cant go wrong for what u need but if you want quiet like i said in earlier post the trail/npss might be the ticket but i would consider the rws 34(better stock trigger)

My best rifles are break-barrels. Even John Whiscombes first rifles were break-barrels. His last rifle, the JW-80 was a fixed barrel, but not due to accuracy, rather due to perception and perceived demand. I would consider re-evaluating my choices if I were you. Your options will be greater with out any real loss in results.

I think you made a spectacular choice. I wish my first springer had been a Cometa Fusion! If you don't like it, you'll be able to turn it around very quickly.

Just a quick note to make sure you get a one-piece scope mount for it! The Accushot/Leapers are a good buy, and so are the Hawkes. Make sure you get one (medium or high) with enough clearance for your scope objective.

I have to agree with Daveshoot. One of the reasons I suggested the Cometa on the Classifieds is that it was bothering me that I might have to buy it myself. I already have 2 Cometas ;-)

It was bothering me, too. Thanks for removing this attractive nuisance, as the lawyers call them... I have to remodel a bathroom and have no business buying more Cometas. (http://../jscripts/tiny_mce/plugins/emotions/images/smiley-frown.gif)

I have an RWS Model 48 in .177 cal.  It sounds like a staple gun going off when fired.  I shoot in my backyard and the neighbors never know what is going on.  Sounds like I am doing some kind of construction project and that is the way I like it.  I have not heard other air rifles so don't know how much quieter an air rifle can be but mine is quiet enough for me.
