: Backyard G-hog DOA
: longislandhunter June 01, 2010, 12:22:22 PM
Well, yesterday afternoon I finally nailed another one of the g-hogs that have been living under my back yard sheds.  It was 6:45 in the afternoon and I was walking past the sliding glass door that looks out into my back yard.  As I walked past I took a glance out into the backyard, like I always do, and there her was.  He had just emerged from under one of the sheds and was slowly walking towards the back of my yard towards an area that he likes to feed in.  I ran down to the basement workshop, opened up one of the gun safes and grabbed my trusty .22 cal Disco which had a full charge of air in it.  I put on my hunting vest, poured a handful of Beeman FTS pellets into the pellet pouch I have sewed onto the vest and slowly slipped out into the back yard.  I made my way to the corner of my deck and scanned the yard,,, he was not in sight.  I quietly grabbed a chair off my deck, placed it behind the corner post of the deck and took a seat.  For the next five minutes I sat motionless and scanned every area of the yard,,,,, finally I saw him.  He was now poking his head out from the shed furthest to my right and he was scanning every area of the yard for danger.  He sat under the shed for about 5 minutes looking around but finally, feeling it was safe, he emerged from under the shed and started walking across my lawn.  I waited until he paused,  put the crosshairs in between his left eye and ear and let the FTS fly.  At the hit he rolled over onto his back and started kicking his legs.  I reloaded and quickly approached him but he wasn't going anywhere.  His tail gave a few quick quivers and then he laid still.  I took some pics to share with my GTA hunting buddies then I skinned and cleaned him and tucked him safely away in the freezer  :)

I still have 1 more g-hog under my sheds and my neighbor now has 3 of them living under his sheds so I have more g-hog hunting to do in the coming days  :)

Hope ya like the picks.........

thanks Tyler......

As for the pics.... I loaded the pics onto Photobucket.com and then added the picture HTML's into my post.....

I'd rather post the pics the "normal" way but it won't work so I'm getting around it with the photobucket procedure..

Nice shot with the Disco Jeff!  It was certainly powerful enough for a pass-through and took the G-hog down quickly.  Nice shot placement.

I don't see any weeds on your lawn!  Good job keeping up with it, it looks good!
I let mine go.. I just don't look at it anymore.  As long as it's green I 'm ok with it :)  Actually it was pretty good for a while when I had Lawn doctor and Green Thumb for a few years, but all the neighbors' lawns had weeds.  Once I stopped the professional lawn service which was costing me an arm and a leg, my lawn got infected again, and turned like all the neighbors' with dandelions and other weeds, in just under 2yrs.  But that's ok, the G-hogs love the clovers :)

Thanks guys  :)  ,, nothin better than back yard g-hog hunting  :)

Harry,,, as for the lawn.... all I do is use the "Scotts - 4 Step Program" and water.  Simple as can be and I get great results.  "Scotts" definitely makes the best fertilizer... at least as far as I'm concerned....

I agree with that Jeff.  I use Scotts products too but it is very hard when your neighbors' lawns all have weeds and the wind blows the weed spores and seeds to your lawn all the time.  It spreads very fast.  I think maybe because you have a lot of fencing around your property, it may not affect you as much, or all your neighbors have perfect lawns too :)

Thanks guys,,,, I've been looking all afternoon for the last resident g-hog but he hasn't showed himself.  I'll be getting up at the crack of dawn tomorrow and will be sitting in my hide, rifle in hand, waiting for him to show his furry little face.   If I get some action I'll make sure to tell you guys all about it  :)

Way to take his head off. What was he thinking, munching on YOUR grass? I'd be worried about eating something so stupid. Hopefully he was just young, tender and naive!

He was actually a fairly young one and when I skinned him I could tell he's gonna be a tender meal indeed  :)

A prime candidate for my favorite cooking method which is to coat heavily in cajun spices and fry em nice and crisp  :)

I'm gonna stick with the .22 Disco.....   it can thread a needle shot after shot, is whisper quiet and is nice and light and easy to manuever with...... all the things that make it the perfect back yard hunter  :)
