: Whistle pig #3

Well thiers been some talk amoungst us here lately about enough muzzle energy to put down a varment at certain ranges well I hope this helps to answer any questions you may have on this subject. At 6:45pm today I went to a place where I know some whistle pigs are and I got into position with my trusty ole RWS 460mag in .22cal, but before we get to the good stuff I want everybody to know I had been shooting for about an hour at another place to make sure I was sighted up and in tune with the gun before I went there to see if I could get a shot today. Now where were we , ok so I pulled up into a spot where I could get a good shot at these piggies which is at 80yds by the way , so I started to glass the mound where I have been seein and shootin at these hogs before so I kinda knew the distance I was shooting so I saw the piggie with his head out of the hole so I cocked up and put the 14.3gr CPHP in the chamber and waited for the piggie to get clear of the mound that was covering most of his body and head so I waited for about 5min and he made the mistake and stood straight up and I was already sighted up on his head and I released the trigger and he droped instantly before I even recovered from the recoil at that distance so I watched thru the scope as he did his death dance that lasted about 30sec  and I went to pick it up to show everybody what I was capable of doing with a spring gun and I'm still in awe over this shot! this rifle ave's around 830fps w/CPHP's last I checked it so anyway as you can see in the pic's the shot hit him right behind the right eye and exited between the eye and ear on the left side of his head a complete pass threw at 80yds this is not the first time I've had this kind of success with my spring guns so I hope this helps anyone who thinks they'd like to shoot a 25cal rifle at 40yds and wondering if it will do the job at 19 or 20ftlbs as I said these kinda shot are not unusual for me to make, I do alot of shooting and practice at long ranges so it becomes very easy once you know your rifle and what it will do! This shot was taken from a sitting position resting off my knee.

80 yards is a heckuva shot!  It just goes to show that knowing your gun and shot placement are king.  I think the CPHP are a great choice for any headshot.  They are just hard enough to help get through the skull of the critters.  I started using them for the bigger game and haven't looked back.

Love the gun!  Never thought I would like something other than a break barrel gun, but I've feel in love with my TF 99 underlever.  It is easier to cock than my other .22 guns and is deadly accurate (thanks to Jaymo's TLC).

I'm jealous of your 460 and your excellent long range shooting! :)

Very nice shooting Mark. You are right though, you need to know your gun to shoot at that distance with a springer.

Nice shooting!  Did you say 80yds?  wow, that's some shot.  Your CPHP had about 8-9fpe left at that distance which is plenty for a small G-hog and even adult ones.

I got a similarly sized young one 2yrs ago with my 850 .22 which shot CPHP's @ 605-610fps (then, now a litte more power) out of the muzzle but the distance was more like 15yds.  I got almost all the G-hogs that summer of '08 with my Diana 36 .177 Springer, which is a 14fpe gun averaging 860 and 905fps with 8.3gr Superdomes and 7.9 CPHP's respectively.  All you need is 9-10fpe on impact for a passthrough on most G-hogs, depending on the angle and their size.
In '09 I shot half the G-hogs with the Diana 350 .22 and the rest with the .22 Condor but this is after I shot 12 G-hogs with a 14fpe gun the year before and recovered every one.  So I knew how deadly even mid-powered Springers can be.  I just like Magnum springers and PCP's too.  I don't discriminate :)  This year I use the .25 Condor now and then, because it costs too much dang $ to just let it sit there  :o  8)   I try to share the hunting duties with all my guns and will switch every couple of months.  Speaking of which, the 350 .177 needs some glass now so it can see some action before all the critters are completely gone from my backyard, hehehe.

Yes it does!  I'm lusting after another .177 gun.  The only one I have left is my Whisper.
