: Pellgun chamber oil
: reysaint June 06, 2010, 12:50:42 AM
I have a reconditioned Ruger Air Hawk that was purchased from Cabelas and shoots very powerful and accurately.

The owners manual says to lubricate the chamber with a few (two or three) drops of chamber oil.  Does this gun have a leather seal requiring oil?  I know that it was manufactured in China where leather seals are very common.

I did lubricate the chamber and let it sit overnight.  The next day when I fired the rifle it souded like a .22 going off. I have a gut feeling that the owners manual is WRONG.

I do not want to damage this rifle.  What are the recommendations from the experts on this forum?

it should have already been lubed since it is new and it will damage it if it detonates alot. it dosnt need to be lubed alot but next time use something that s not combustible

Do not introduce any kind of chamber oil into the compression tube it will basically fry the piston seal and possibly cause spring damage do to the pre- detonation, sounded like a .22  going off. :0 The old leather seals were meant to be conditioned with oil but the seal in the Ruger along with the internals need to be lubed with the proper lubes in the right places and amount's. what is wrong with manufacturers advising people to do this? My Beeman R9 manual said to do this too. Just wrong...

Ed,
Could you be more specific.  Can Pellgun oil (two drops) be used?

I think you are right on that one.  Umarex printed the instructions for the Ruger Air Hawk.

IF your airgun is properly tuned then no need for silicone chamber oil. From what you wrote, PELLGUN oil is used on co2 airguns to recondition seals. The manual says use silicone chamber oil because that's its maintenance, they say one drop..use one drop for synthetic seals. Most or all airguns bought at popular stores are synthetic seals. If you get your airgun tuned no need for silicone chamber oil. When I first started, I ordered a tube of the silicone oil and still not even halfway. I only use it every 5000 shots or 10 tins of 500 with only a drop (tuned my ag's myself) still looks good when I take it apart.

The oil finds it's way around and in front of the piston the piston the piston will start to glaze and get hard. Oil in front of the piston is where your getting that "like a .22 going off sound". I personally would never introduce any oil into the action no matter what the manufacture say's. Ed
