I just shot this starling this morning and went to pick it up and saw this abscess. How this thing did not get septic and die before it got this bad is a good question. Maybe he landed behind my fence to "end things".

I've never seen that on a starling before.... wonder what it is....

Jeff, I think it is an abscess. If he got had an injury or something stuck in him (maybe a pellet) or anything for that matter than the body could encapsulate the spot which than fills with pus and exudate. If left alone it will normally burst and drain itself and get rid of whatever is in there, or become septic and die. I am just surprised that it got this large before one or the other had happened.

Maybe a rubbing of Preparation H and some direct pressure would cure it Wade.

Yikes....looks like a hornet`s nest growing in him/her.
Wade....it`s one of those "Die by Airgun" thing.... Maybe it`s happy you put him out of his misery!!!
