Hello,
I got a cheap Crossman pump bb/pellet gun for Christmas last year. I have shot about 1000 bbs and 2000 pellets though it and mounted a Bushnell scope (that I adjusted the optics on for 20yards). I am really having fun with it. I shot only targets and plinking from between 10 and 40 yard. I have read a lot about the 'adult' airguns and would like to try one. After a bunch of reading and looking, I think the Gamo CFX ($199) would be a nice gun. I would like a 'big' scope, so the LEAPERS 6-24x50 AO Varmint Scope with Illuminated Reticle ($99). I think the Accushot 1-Pc Mount w/1" Rings, High, 11mm Dovetail ($19) would be a good mount for the scope on this gun. What do you think of my choices? Might they work well together?

Yes they will Martin. Scopes are a personal preference, but you have chosen a very good air rifle in the GAMO CFX.. I have three of them and enjoy shooting all of them. They are very accurate and have plenty of power for small game as well. Of course you will probably need the high Accushot mount with that big 50 scope..:) One point that has been brought up in a post here a while back.. Loading pellets in the CFX a little different than a break barrel. You have to turn the drum on the breech to load your pellet. If it is not properly seated, you may damage you o'ring. What happens when you load your pellet, sometimes a snug pellet will not seat all the way and you think it is, and when you turn the breech drum back it may catch the scirt of the pellet and peel it off which could get down in the seal area.. So be aware of this issue. It happened to me early on when I got my first CFX, but realized what happened and always made sure after that, that the pellet was seated properly.. Lucky I did not damage my seal but there have been a couple instances where someone has damaged it and it is a pain to fix..:) Gamo did not service the seal at first, but one of our members talked to the right guy there and since the, the seals have been available..:)
For sure the CFX is a great gun.. and best of luck.

Welcome aboard, Martin! Good choice on the CFX, that was my first "adult" airgun, too. However, I think you might find that scope a problem. Because of the way the CFX loads, any scope over about 13 1/2" will interfere with the loading port. I had a Leapers 3-12x44 full size on mine, and that was as big as I could go without blocking the loading port. Good luck, and drop in often!

Hello Martin and a big GTA WELCOME. :) I also own a CFX and they do make a great hunting airgun but as Gene said, watch the pellet pinch. Once you get it down, you shouldn't have any problem's with her and she'll be a fine shooter for you. Ed

The 440 is a discontinued model, but it has a lifetime warranty from Gamo and USED to sell for close to $200.
It's the same action as the Shadow, 220, and several of the newer models.

Welcome Martin. I also have a CFX and it is a great gun. Even better, alot better, after a CDT turbo tune and GRT trigger. I bought a Leapers mini swat 3-12x44 scope and its short size leaves ample access to the loading breech. This scope does have issues though. A review was posted recently explaining it's problem and I beleive it is a flaw on all scopes in this model. With patience, I was able to overcome the wierd "fish-eye" view it has. Good luck with your first adult airgun 8)

Well I ordered a CFX and it should be here next week. I am also picking up a GRT-III trigger. I skipped the scope for now because of the size concerns. I will shot it stock for a while and then pick a scope later once I have it in hand.
Thanks for your advises.

Hi Martin.. Congratulations on your purchase..:) You never answered my PM about test driving one of my CFX's before you bought it..:) Guess you got anxious.. hehe.. I think you will like it very much.. It is a great air rifle.. Did you get the synthetic or the Royal with wooden stock?
Gene

Congrat's Martin, once you get her tamed down she'll be a fine shooter for you and DaTuna trigger will really get you going. Oh The Royal, I know that babies in my future hehe. Ed

Congrats Martin,,,, the CFX is a really nice shooter, I love mine. I've used it to take many a pest, best of luck with it.

Martin stopped by here today and picked up a GRT-III for his CFX that he doesn't even have yet. He lives just up the street about ten mile in Greenville. We shot the bull for about an hour and then he said something about having to go back to work. I didn't think anybody around here worked except on their airguns. :D :D Anyhow... Martin is a great guy and I too welcome him to the forum
Ain't this a great place to be????? 8)

I'm starting to think he may be too smart for the rest of us :-)! First, he orders a CFX for his first gun, excellent choice as we all know. Then, he DOESN'T order the monster scope, and finally, gets a GRT III trigger even before the gun arrives. Well, we've got enough pretty faces around here (nice orange shirt, Dan!), guess some brains can't hurt us too much :-). Anyway, welcome again, Martin. Later.

LOL Dano.. I bet you would give her a good shootin lessen.. hehe

I think the first clue about him having more brains than the rest of us was that he
asked about the choices for his first rifle .... before buying it! :D
Good choices Martin, Welcome to the addiction oops... errr... I mean habit..darn!
... I mean hobby... yes that's it.. hobby! :D

A truly smart person would have made sure the CFX was in stock before ordering it....that way they would not have to wait until mid june to get it....
I did get 10% off because of another post on this webiste...that does make me feel a little smart.

:D lol Martin, It sounds like you'll fit right in here!

I may not have posted before, but this is a great forum! I bought a CFX, shot it about 20 times, then sent it off to CDT for a turbo tune and a GRT III. Man, was it hard to let it go away for a visit... Already having withdrawl symptoms.
I fought with the choices of scopes and setteled for a CenterPoint adventure class 6x32mm R/G AO compact scope. Last night I ordered the solid high Accushot rings (11mm dovetail) with a standard Beaman scope stop. They should be here by the time the CFX gets here. In the meantime my Shadow 1k has been finding a couple grackles. I ordered the GRT III for the Shadow, but think I am going to send it in to Bob to have it worked over after the CFX finds it's way back home.
My wife isn't sure about this air rifle fetish... She says she rather be playing with a standard 22. I have always loved air rifles, so this is a natural progression for me. My first was a Benjamin model 3100 BB repeater. Sure miss that thing.

Welcome aboard, Mark. Couple of things you might not know. First, the Centerpoint scopes are simply rebadged Leapers, the one you bought is the same as the Leapers Bug Buster. Check it out carefully, Leapers QC has been slipping lately, and I recently had 2 of these that had optical problems. The problems were bad enough to make the scopes useless. Also, you won't need the scope stop with the Accushot rings, they have an integral stop pin. Good luck, and drop by often!

Quick question, I mounted new bugbuster 6x32 on my test b3 to check for accuracy after all the crap I did to it. After about 20 shots what appears to be a bubble with a large line appeared. It moved a couple times in the next 30 or so shots. I assume the obvious is just to send it back to Leapers? The other 3 Bugbusters I bought are on QB's so dont have any kick to deal with, I assume they should handle the kick from a mid 600fps B3? The Benjamin Legacy I have kicks like a mule in comparison and has a lovely spring twist and twang along with a notchy trigger.
Cheers

Thanks Daved. I have noticed after looking at alot of scopes that it seemed like there was some rebadging going on. I'll keep an eye on the scope after I get it mounted. In the meantime all I have done so far is to look through it and the optics look pretty good thus far.
I really had a time figuring out what to buy as far as a scope and mounts were concerned. Our back yard gives me about a 20yd area. I only shoot in select zones not wanting to bounce pellets into a neighbors yard. I felt that the 6x would be a good for now. Hopefully I didn't make too bad of a decision.

Mark I have the same conditions in my yard. This is a great solution for our limited situation.
http://archerairguns.com/trap.html
The main thing is, "Duct Seal" a non hardening clay/putty used to seal electrical wall holes works great and is redily available. It makes for a very quiet shooting experince. The Archer pellet trap box I have as well and its very well made, but you could rig duct seal on/in anything you want for very little money.
Cheers

Yeah, either send it back to where you got it or contact Leapers. If their QC department was as good as their CS department, these scopes would be awesome! The ones I had were bad right out of the box, could not get a focused image much past 10 yards. THAT'S usesless!
Dave
-
I think 6x is fine for your shooting, Mark. I have variables on my guns, if I wanted to stretch it to the limits, my "yard" is over 500 feet deep. Most of my shooting is 30 yards or so, and I usually have my scopes at 6 or 8x.
My Bug Busters were bad right out of the box, like I said above, I couldn't get them to focus much over 10 yards. Which is too bad, because it was perfect for the gun I wanted to put it on, an older IZH 60. If the Leapers/Centerpoint doesn't work out, check out the Nikko Stirling scopes. In fact, check out the Product Reviews, Scopes and Mounts. I've got a couple of Leapers reviews as well as my Nikko in there. Might be helpful. Later.

I feel like I have hijacked Martin's thread...
Martin, For what little time I had before sending my CFX away for a visit, mine has a good feel and look to it. I am sure you will like it.
Thanks for the info guys, even if it is a little bit late. We were out on the bikes and camping this weekend.

Well my new CFX is still on back order, and the expected shipping date just changed agian. I HATE WAITING....

Hang in there dood. When it arrives, treat it gently, and don't rush things. The CFX is a great shooter. We all look forward to your review when it finally gets in you eager hands 8)
