I was up this morning at the crack of dawn, and I decided to scope out the fish pond before I had my morning coffee.
So I gatheredthe gear that I would be needing for a long protracted hunt out in the back yard. Things in my out back yard have been becoming more dangerous lately, as a Red Fox has been spotted foraging in my area, along with the deadly Possums and Raccoons, great care should be takenso that the skilled hunter should not be taken bysurprise by these wilily beasts.
As I walked out the back door with my trusty Gamo 890S, I stopped to carefully load a Gamo Hunter into my rifle, and put my safety on. I hung my Nikon 10 X 50 binoculars around my neck, and proceeded out. As I quietly stalked toward the rear of my house I heard the sound of the very deadly Leopard Frog, this creature is known to ravish full ponds of decorative fish if not controlled fast. So I proceeded to head in the direction of this sound, bearep, bearep ! Now behind some good cover, I began to scan the pond for signs of this beastly frog. I again heard the frightening sound, bearep, bearep, which drew my attention toward the water lilies, and there he was, hiding behind the water lilies. Now the long stalk begins, getting to cover for the perfect position to make the shot, I carefully crawled behind the newly planted annuals, I crawled as close to the grunge as I could,with rifle in hand. It was several feet to my next cover, but I made it ! Now to find this killer of innocent fish, there he was, and I was, next to the cat tails,in a perfect position for the shot, I brought my trusty 890S up to my shoulder and clicked off the safety as the cross hairs found there prey, squeezing my GRT-III trigger as the early morning sun reflected off of its beautiful gold surface, and crack ! A perfect shot, the deadly Leopard Frog made a great splash in the pond, and fell limp in the water. Innocent fish could now swim freely around the pond.
This big fellow was over 8 inches long and weighed a little over a pound, a fierce predator put down !
Now back to my house for that cup of coffee, and a well deserved rest ! :-)

Bill that was a fantastic step by step hunting event.. Loved your discriptiveness of how you made your way from cover to cover sneaking up on the deadly fish killer. This Hunting event will go down in our archieves..:) Hey it does not matter if it is a frog or a mouse...:) It is still hunting at its best..:) And that Gamo 890 is a great air rifle as well.. I wish I had one.. Probably the only one that I am missing from my herd.. hehe
Thanks for sharing your backyard hunt with us.. I really enjoyed reading it.. OH! did you have battered and deep fried frog legs for breakfast?...:)

But the call of the wild was to great for me to resist. I just had to answer that call, out into the wilds of my out back yard !
If I would have hesitated for that coffee, that elusive, deadly Leopard Frog may have slipped off, only to return to ravage my pond fishes.
At times sacrifices must be made for the good of the many !

It takes big balls to skip the coffee and go on such an intense hunt. I cant hold a gun steady without my caffiene fix. Even on a bench.

And no Gene, I didn't eat it !, I am using it for bait, I want that Fox ! I hope those Gamo Hunters can handle him. ;-)

Bill, that was a cool hunt story so much so that I want to go frog hunting hehe. Again, great story and shot buddy.:) Mmmm, frog leg's. Ed

LOL Bill, A nice head shot with your 890 will do the trick at 20 yards... Make sure you use a hunting pellet..:) Ya in my younger years we would go frog giggin at night and bring home a gunny sack full of them..:) Sit down and cut the legs off and clean em up.. Used a good batter mix and would deep fry them and serve em up with eggs and hash browns... YUM YUM.. Those were the good ol days..:)

That was a 30 foot shot, and not a inch less ! And I have eaten frog legs down south, and they were great, better than fried chicken,but this is a Yankee frog, might get caught in my throat ! lol
And thanks Ed, this was my big chance, and I did have to get that bugger out of the pond, I get three or four a year, and this was the first day of huntin season. ;-)

Bill loved the step by step account of your hunt, for the fish killer and I hope he made good bait for the bigger game in your back yard jungle.
Gene when you go froggin you are not supposed to use a gig. It's better to use a boat paddle, or a 8-10 foot 1x4 and slap the water right beside the frog,huh. It knocks them out long enough to scoop them up and put them in the sack, then they wake up, alot fresher,hehe.

This is the first Kill I made since I have been here, except for a frog or two, eating my fish !
It seems that all the bad critters have either died or told there friends about me, I haven't seen anything since I removed that (DEADLY) possum last year.
This little account took me 3 or 4 times longer to write than it took to happen ! hehe...he
And no fox last night, I kept an eye on the bait until 3:45 A.M. this morning. So I bagged the bait and will continue that hunt tonight at dusk. :-)

I truly enjoyed that hunting story, I could almost hear the little bugger croaking. Sweet kill with a sweet rifle. I love my 890, great little shooter. As for the fox, like Gene said, a good head shot with a good hunting pellet will take care of Mr. Fox no problem. Reading your hunting post makes me wanna go frog huntin now :)

Bill that is a great hunt story.
You should be a sports writer. You have a knack for that it seems.
I can tell you this, them yankee frogs eat just as good and those down here.
I have had some from Pennsylvania when I was there.
Great hunt and story. Thanks for sharing it with us.

I just made a big deal abouteverything I did, I tried to make it humorous !
After all, it's just a frog hunt in my back yard, and until some squirrels start coming back to my "out back yard", or unless I get real lucky with that fox, frog is all I have !

A target is a target mate. Shooting is what counts. Grape off the vines at 50yrds can be fun aswell.

I only wanted to remain a hunter, and as of now, it is as close as I get. With luck, I may have an opportunity to wright a real hunting account of the great fox hunt ! If I pray real hard that is !!!
But please don't stop posting your GREAT and Hunting accounts. as I truly enjoy every, un-embellished word that you write ! A truly pure hunting account !

I was born and raised in Philadelphia, and can assure you that the frogs you had, weren't from Phila. area !
Thanks for the kind words, Gordon, Each year three or four of these beasties appear in my pond, as if by magic, and begin to eat my fishes, and try to eat my 6 - 9 inch breeders. I also must be vigilant to watch for Cranes and Gray Herons, as they too love my pond fish. Ijust chase them away, and have two bronze, life sizes statues ofHerons thatmake them nervous and confused.I have dispatched over 30 - 40 Raccoons over the last 21 years, but I haven't seen one, or signs of one,in the last three years ! I must be doing a fine job with them. If I keep this up, I'll have another post here.

Maybe they were not from that area,
I was at Tobyhanna Army Depot for a couple of years and roamed all over the nearby area.
Rabbits, squirell, birds and even one deer fell prey to my trusty flintlock.
They (Penn), gave me a resident license because I was active military.
I thought I was close to heaven.
UNTIL IT CAME WINTER and MORE SNOW. lol.
Snow got deep, I had recently came there from Greenland and Iceland.
Still froze, even today, pore ole South Carolina fellow.
Full moon here, makes me want to go hunting frogs.
I like your great pond hunt.
It is good.
