: What boredom creates.
: June 03, 2007, 05:33:41 PM
After reading all the new posts this morning I got bored. I couldn't shoot as the weather has been up and down like a yoyo and my backyard has turned into a swamp.

I found this in my shed and wonderred what I could do with it. After making a mess in the carport which looked like this:
(http://i84.photobucket.com/albums/k38/avanzyl/DSC01134.jpg) (http://photobucket.com)
I ended up with these:

(http://i84.photobucket.com/albums/k38/avanzyl/DSC01135.jpg) (http://photobucket.com)
Now all I need to do is stick them all together and see what happens.
Last time I got bored I ended up with this:

I forgot to mention that it is ply wood. It will be going onto my Typhoon if it all works out.

Boy Andre,

When I get Bored, I'm lucky if I don't screw something up too much, or just fall asleep !! LOL

But you seem to have channeled your boredom into beneficial and creative endeavors..

Beautiful work there Andre, I look forward to seeing your finished work !!!

Thanks for showing us how it is done.

I was thinking of using a green stain so that when all the layers are done it will have various colours hopefully producing a camo look. Who knows.

That is some really nice work.  I really like the pistol stock you made, looks very comfortable.

After cutting the different layers the need to be stuck together. I put a bit more thought into the glue on this stock and got an industrial strength marine wood glue. I don't want it coming apart when it gets wet. The first one I made was general Hardware store home handy man stuff. Glue needs to be applied to the full surface with no gaps in between. When you clamp the bits together the excess will ooze out and can then be wiped off with a damp cloth or removed later with a craft knife. I use two bits of timber on the outsides to clamp a larger area with fewer clamps. The thicker the timber the fewer clamps needed. G-clamps work well. I glue two bits at a time as it is easier to line up. The one on the right has 3X2 timber and only needs three clamps whereas the one on the left is only 1/2 inch thind so more clamps are needed. A good way to tell how far the clamps need to be spaced is by how much oozes out. Remember you cant unstic and reglue if you make a mistake.

I then use a dremmel or other such tool to neaten up the edges before the next phase of glue.

Make sure you have your coffee or other drink close on hand. We don't want to dehydrate ourselves.

You will start seeing the different layers coming into play.

Andre M8 looks like you used PVA standard wood glue ??? Make sure you invest in some proper laminating glue next time your at the store bud especially if your only going to be using an oil finish on it if your going to varnish it then you'll get away with it other than that M8 good stuff.
Looks like you got the hang of it fine so dose that mean I don't have to worry about doing the inletting for your CFX any more :)

The glue is better than the stuff I originally used. Marine grade Hold Fast stuff.

I then ended up with 3 layers left to be stuck together. Again I used the dremmel to neaten up the edges and into the clamps for the final time.

Clamped over night I can't wait for it to come out. Then the fun starts. The imagination runs wild. What shape? HMMMMMMMMMMMM.
: Re: What boredom creates.
: June 07, 2007, 11:25:34 PM
All glued together and you have an inletted blank ready for your shaping skills.
(http://i84.photobucket.com/albums/k38/avanzyl/DSC01145.jpg) (http://photobucket.com)
Out of the clamps and the shaping begins. I started on the pistol grip as it has to hold comfortably as a start.

Andre, this like watching " This ol Airgun Workshop" from start to finish. I see a nice grain pattern forming out of the grip, great work and keep it coming. Ed

After a bit of rough shaping you'll end up with a stock look alike. HAHA
(http://i84.photobucket.com/albums/k38/avanzyl/DSC01149.jpg) (http://photobucket.com)
(http://i84.photobucket.com/albums/k38/avanzyl/DSC01150.jpg) (http://photobucket.com)

(http://i84.photobucket.com/albums/k38/avanzyl/DSC01152.jpg) (http://photobucket.com)
This step of the shaping is done with something that sands a lot at a time. I use an angle grinder with a heavy duty sanding disc.Take it slow though as if you remove too much you can't get it back. Stick whatever but pad you are using on the back to shape to and then do the rest of the shaping off that. I've done a curved cheekpiece as I find it more comfortable. After the shaping is done you need to sand it smooth. Thats the hard part.
: RE: What boredom creates.
: Splash June 09, 2007, 09:26:32 AM
It's turning out real nice Andre. Sanding it smooth is the easy part tho. Use a random orbit sander for the big areas and a moto tool with a 1/2" sanding drumm for the tight spots. The finest grain that I can find on the drums is 220, so I glue strips of 320-800 on them, but 400 is plenty smooth enough. 8)

This is what it looks like with the action inside.
(http://i84.photobucket.com/albums/k38/avanzyl/DSC01153.jpg) (http://photobucket.com)
This is what I'm hoping to achieve.
(http://i84.photobucket.com/albums/k38/avanzyl/DSC01154.jpg) (http://photobucket.com)
I prefer sanding by hand as I found the electric sanders a bit rough for my liking.

: Splash June 10, 2007, 10:13:29 AM
Andrea, are you going to make the comb and butt adjustable, or are you just going for that color? It's going to look real nice either way. Always wondered what a plywood lam would look like, thought that the ply laminates would make a nice patern and it does. I always glue finer paper on my sanders and it comes out real smoooooth.

Andre, looking super, great work I must say. 8) I got the camo thing down, gess I should see what I can do about making a stock hmmm. Ed
: Re: What boredom creates.

I'm going to do the adjustable but and cheekpiece. Might even do an adjustable palm rest. I'm undecided about that. Once finished it is getting a Forest Green stain and finished off with the Birchwood Casey stock oil. Then a good buff up for a deep shine.HEHE
