Long time no post for me--been really busy---moving to IL from TN. My family just bought a new lake place in WI and they HAD a major chipmunk problem. I went for a visit over the weekend. As soon as I drove onto the property I heard the telltale chirps and squeaks all over the place. I never realized how damaging these little guys can be---their tunneling collapsed and ruined two stone retaining walls, cracked a driveway and two sheds are tilting due to ground below being tunneled!!! Thousands of dollars in damages have accrued due to these menaces. Needless to say I was ready to go to work (with full agreement by family and neighbors that I would "help" rid the area of the pests). The neighbors have been trying to rid the area with traps etc. for years---they catch an average of 1chipper a week. I have been thinking of buying a new rifle for about 6 mos. since I just started "springing" in Jan. this year, but after this weekend I'm pretty happy with my rig. I have a basic S1K $125 with the basic air rifle scope 9x32 for $50. My ammo of choice is Beeman Crow-mag .177, when those ran out I grabbed the jsb predators. Man I was on fire!!! I couldn't believe the headshots I was making!! My shots ranged from 9-38yds. You won't believe it, but I took out 45 chipmunks in less than 6 hours of hunting!!! I only had my camera phone to take the pics so I don't know if I can load them here. I only have pics of about 25-30 of'em (battery ran out). It was absolutely fantastic---my family and neighbors couldn't believe the numbers I was bringing in--my Dad even commented "Almost all of these are headshots!!---how'd you do that??" My reply--a bit of luck and good pellets I think!! What a great pasttime and sport---my kids will be hunting with me soon---the local chippers will be a great way to hone their skills for bigger game. Thanks to all who post here--love reading all about it.
P.S. Can anyone tell me how to post camera phone pics?
Take care,
BHurney

Nice Fathers day gift for your Dad, and his neighbors.
I am sure your Mom liked it also.
Good shooting and nice story as well.
Keep it up.
Hmm no help on the phone pictures here.
I still have one with a dial on it.
-
Bret, sound's like you got some hunting still ahead of you but you got a fantastic start. Digcam yes, phone pic's no but some of our great member's will jump in and get you up and running. Ed

Hello Bret,
Great Shoting, those chippies are difficult targets, allways moving and alert to danger.
I know about photography not all electronic cell phones. There are two ways that I know of to get your photos out of your cell phone, unless you allready have a cell phone that has a connecting wire from your cell phone to a computer USB PC connector ? If so, you must have received software for your computer, follow these instructions, and down load your photos.
Or, if your cell phone can connect to the internet, send your computer an e-mail with the photo as an attachment. save photo to your file.
Or, you can purchase a program called DATAPILOT, around $60.00, comes with programs and connecting cables. PLEASE check to be sure that your cell phone is supported by this Data Transfer Suit Product prior to purchase !
Best wishes, let me know how you have made out !

Hey guys, thanks for all the replies---yes it was absolutely heaven---and again this weekend I went back for more!!! Total count is now 81!!!!! They haven't been hunted ever!! The property (house etc.) is 28 yrs. old. There are almost zero squeaks, barks, and chirps these days!!! I left just a few----on purpose--I mean heck, otherwise what'll I do next year?
Man what a blast--I did run out of my Beeman crowmags and have been using the jsb pred.---I think the beemans shoot better out of my s1k, but I still didn't miss very many with the jsb's (as noted!).
Thanks again,
Bret

Good shooting Bret,
I think as soon as the other neighborhood Chippers find out about the vacant
condos there some will move in and then you will have to continue the
control activity at your private reserve. lol..
Thanks for the update and when you get some pictures post a couple.

You have some kind of record there Bert,
I bet that the owners are happy to be rid of these destructive pest.
Let us see your trophies, and you also will have photos to remember this hunt !
Keep us informed on any additions !

With a pest problem like that, I'd offer to help out. I like shooting pests. It doesn't seem like you need any help, though!
Nice shooting!

This is my first post on this forum.
I also have a house at a lake in wisconsin, and Chipmunks are exactly why I bought my Shadow 1000 at Wally World. They absolutely ruin your property. In the first month I eliminated atleast 2 dozen of them. I remember waking up one morning to one of them chirping outside my window next to my porch. I grabbed the S1K, went outside in my boxers and placed a perfect head shot... then went back to sleep for 2 hours.
On a side note, thank god I found this forum, I absolutely love the S1K but the trigger is a nightmare. I've been shooting since 4 years old, never in my life have I encountered a trigger this bad. I fully look forward to talking to Bob and getting his new trigger.

I know how you feel, when I bought my Gamo 890S, a beautiful rifle but the worst trigger imagInable. Thanks to Bob, I now have a sweet shootin baby. I know that you will love the GRT-III, you just can't believe the total change !

There are of us springers in good old Wisconsin, and a couple of us who are running out of things to shoot at. All depending on where this lake house is we might be able to hook up with you someday on one of your return trips.
Other than that welcome aboard.
Hope you get that picture posting worked out soon, would love to see 45 dead chippers in one pile.
What some of would give to have that shooting fun.

Welcome to the forum Tony. Like Bill said,, this is a great place to be :)
As for Bobs trigger, it will transform your S1K !! It's incredible the difference it will make.
I look forward to your future posts and don't forget to post some pics and stories in the hunting gate,,, we can never get enough stories and pics of airgun huntin :)

Hey guys,
Thanks for the "pats on the back" it was a blast taking out the varmints---I have left just a few for my kids to get a few shots, but the rest are history. The house is on Green Lake---for those that are unfamiliar---35 mins. west of Fond Du Lac. The triggger does leave much to be desired---i think I'll get in touch with "Da Tuna" regarding that drop in trigger of his---read raves about it. Haven't had the time to download pics---I have three pics on my phone--one with 12 chips, one with 8 chips and a few squirrels and the last has about 8 or 9 chips---battery ran out during the first weekend and no one was as impressed with my pics (family and friends) so I quit taking any more---they aren't really the hunting types---some just think I'm cruel since i'm not eating them---explained the destruction of property, etc. but oh well. My 10 and 8 yr old will be taking the shots next weekend. C ya later guys--on vacation in CA. gotta go!
Head counts --Chips 81, crows 2, starlings 3, squirrels 4---all takenlegally and "in season" where applicable

Fond du lac.... wisconsin??

I'm actually on the south shore of Lake Geneva, seems there is a few people near me from this board.
I don't have a current picture of my S1K, but right now it is all stock with leapers high rings and a Barska 3-12x50 scope. I grab a pic tonight.
Here is some trespassers from last year. I guess they can't read my 'NO TRESPASSING' sign?
I've only seen 2 on my property this year, last year we were infested. My neighbors still have issues with them though.
-
Great pics Tony :)
Last year I had 1 or 2 chippers running around my yard but they didn't bother me so I didn't bother them. However,,,, this year the little buggers are running all over the place so I'm gonna have to do something about it. I've noticed den holes dug all over the place, especially around my shed and rear deck.
Only problem is I'm gonna have to "cull em" out when the wife and kids are away from the house as they think they're just the cutest little things and they'll go bonkers if they know I'm gonna eliminate them.
Looking forward to seeing the pic of your S1K.

Jeff,
Thanks!
I hear ya about the whole family situation. You might want to send them off to the mall or something and do a little backyard hunting. I'm sure there will still be some left over for them to 'enjoy', lol. Next month they will be out in full around here. All of my long range practice I've been doing in the woods will definitely help, but I think what will help the most is the trigger. By the time I'm done with the mile long pull, it is hard to keep it on target.
What kind of pellets are you gentlemen using? So far I've found the most accurate in my gun are the gamo rockets, but they are heavy and seem to be inconsistant as far as weight and roundness goes. I want to try the Beeman Crow Magnum next but I would love to hear what you guys are using for varmint control.
BTW the last picture is of the chipmunk that woke me up. You can tell I wasn't happy at all.

Hello Tony, Give the Tomahawk's or Predators a try. They work great in all my babies and all my airguns are hunters. They also work very well on larger game. Great shootin and pic's Tony. Ed
-
Ed is correct. Those tomahawks and predators are great on game. The tomahawks are pretty cheap price wise, while the predators are a bit pricey, but still well worth the money. I usually use the predators during small game season on squirrels and such, but lately I've been using the tomahawks during my duck farm pest hunts and they've been taking down birds, squirrels, rabbits and even fat adult woodchucks with ease. Give em a try, I think you'll like em.
Jeff
-
Hey guys,My s1k really seems to like crow-magnums and jsb predators, but I've never tried the tomahawks--I've also used the crosman premiers from wal-mart, but they didn't seem to hit very hard and i was injuring game rather than making clean kills--the crowmags changed all that. I've had a great time with the gamo and the spring action, but i'm thinking about going to the dark side----very tempting with the accuracy and all the plusses that go with'em---anyone know much about the air force talon ss or any others----i like that the SS is shrouded and supposed to be a lot quieter than other pcp's---which will make a difference to my neighbors and nearby game.
c ya,
Bret
-
The tomahawks are absolutely fantastic on game, give em a try. They are one of my favorite pellets, and cheap also.
As for the dark side,,,,, never been there so can't make any informative comments in that dept. Perhaps someday I'll know the power of the dark side, right now I'm stuck on springers. Although I am going to be ordering a QB-78 soon, which I guess is sorta, kinda, the dark side?????

Hey L.I.H.
thanks for the note---btw--I've really enjoyed your stories and pics in the past--keep on posting!! Where'd you get the tomahawks--& who makes'em? I've only bought from Sportsmans warehouse and all the other stores I go to have a few tins of gamo (bass pro, cabelas, wal-mart). Thanks
BP
-
Cabelas sell's the Tomahawks, that's were I pick up mine and I get em all while I'm there..sold out hehe. Ed
-
I usually order the tomahawks from midsouth,,, they are usually the cheapest. I go through alot of em so I usually order enough to keep me shootin for awhile.
Jeff
-
Midsouth Shooters........ Gamo Tomahawks $4.99 for 750 per tin.. Great deal for a great hunting and target pellet..:)
