: How big is too big??
: Skip June 12, 2007, 04:39:48 PM
A question for the pest controllers.   What would be the largest backyard pest I should attempt to take?   I would be using an S1K .177 shooting 7.9gn CPHP at 900+ fps. Maximum range 25 yrds.  With proper shot placement I am looking for  lights out.   They may be pests but still deserve a clean kill.
What do you think?

Howdy Skip, I wouldn't be afraid to go up to raccoon size with my 177 Phantom and CPHP pellets.  It does not make even 900 fps.  With a clean head shot at 25yds, I don't see why it wouldn't take them right down.  I've gained a lot more respect for the take down power of air rifles lately from actually experiencing the kills rather than just reading about them.  Even big ground hogs are no problems with head shots at a reasonable range.

Good hunting to you.

You have the right pest eliminator there Skip..:) The S1K is a very powerful springer for what you want to do.. The guys in the NZ, shoot big possums and turkeys with there S1K's... They love them..:) You can take a look at the Hunting Forum and look for "Damage's" post and  you can see how big the game is that he shoots with his..:) Pretty impressive I think.

Then a head shot ground hog at say 20 yrds would me ok. My wife's garden is what I need to keep safe for now.  The yard is what you might call a target rich enviorment for pests, but  I only take action when they create a problem.

Id say stay away from rabid dogs, fox's, cyotes. Anytrhing else leading up to that size the gun should work prefect. Assuming you have the shot placement.

Confidence in shot placement is growing since CDT tune and trigger. THANK YOU ALL for your input.
