: Gainesville gets flooded
: JMG June 18, 2007, 10:29:21 AM

Well I got up this morning to head iinto work I usually leave around 5:40 am to be at work at 6. I knew it was raining all night because the thunder woke me up a few times but I didnt think much of it. I started rolling down my street and water was up to the curb but it didnt really hit me yet. When I got to the main road that takes me to the highway that the shop is on, the few cars and trucks that were out were moving very slow. I just kept on going to work really not thinking much of it. All of the roads to work that I take were flooded... I guess I wasnt awake and me and my beater chevy truck trudged on. I got to work and walked across the river that was flowing between where we park and the shop water up to the tops of my boots. I finally got inside and all we could say in the shop was Holy _ _ _ _! Then it dawned on me as to what had happened flash floods in my little podunk town I live in. Half our crew showed up today and we kept on hearing news about so and so getting flooded and their place got doused and so on and so forth. My G/F called about lunch time wondering if I made it to work because the highway the shop is on was shut down after I had gotten to work. I and mine are all ok no flooding at my house.... I didnt go and look out into the shootin range because I am not really wanting any more disappointment today. I do have my cable and internet but my cel phone(main phone) isnt up yet. I am sort of bummed tonight because I have several friends that were affected by this flash flooding and I am unable to really do anything to help them out. Between 3 am last night and 7 am this morning Gainesville received 8.5" of rain. On the way home I passed by the Sac n Save and Walmart... both stores taking damage from the water Sac n Sav is a major grocery store here in Gainesville and they pretty much got wiped out not to mention about 7-8000 sq. ft. of there parking lot was just lifted up and floated away. I am one of the fortunate people that live in Gainesville but there are many here that have been pretty devistated by the flood. Throw out a prayer for some or all of those people even if ya dont know em.... they need it. Thanks ya'll

I think John recently had a limb in his house also.  I sent him a PM, he sounds OK.
But from the sounds of it there are many not as well off at this time.
Keep them in your thoughts and John I hope the water recedes soon.
I recall a flash flood in Lampasas from the late 1950's and it went down fast but left a lot of damage.

I called Steve this afternoon on my way home from Jury Duty...yay me:)  He said that where your house is at wasn't under water, so you were most likely ok.  Didn't want to bug you at work on your cell, but it sounds like it's dead anyways.  Steve said the lightning really went nuts up at his place, the horseapple tree in his yard took a hit or two...you know THE horseapple tree, the one we shoot the horseapples off of?  Pretty danged close to the house.  Anyways, glad you're all safe up there.  Jury Duty was ok btw, they didn't even want me, just gave me $6 and told me to hit the road:)  Hope the rest of the Gainesvillers come out ok, that sure was some crazy rain!

Edit:  We must have had some crazy wind also, my recycle bin (full at the curb), was picked up, moved about 1 house down, laid on its side, and only one bottle fell out, just laying right next to it....this is one of those 64gallon recycle bins, and it was full to the top.  Really odd, like someone moved it and VERY carefully laid it over.  Insurance guy is coming to look at my roof this week too, I need a new one, it's beat!

A few people are still missing... a few found dead. I was thinking about Steve but kind of figured he was ok out where he was since the 2 creeks that run through the middle of town arent real close to him. In one part of the town on the south side it is pretty bad though. A few mobile homes got picked up and moved for free. Not to mention the amount of new asphalt that got displaced. I know the way I am speaking it sounds like I was right in the middle of it.... well I was. But my house and family were not in any harms way. I was just a half asleep idiot driving through it this morning.

Yea, Steve and family are fine.  I didn't know anything about anything till I was driving home from Jury Duty and called my wife.  She says,"Hey, have you talked to your buddies in Gainesville?  It's underwater!".  So I called Steve first, since I know he's home, and he told me where the rivers overflowed and where your house is in comparison, he figured you were fine.  So went home fat dumb and happy, mowed my lawn, took a nap, then woke up and saw the news where they were showing some of the flooding....."Wow!"  Crazy stuff man, Texas has some of the weirdest weather I've ever seen and I've lived in a few different places during my life.  Tomorrow will be sunny, and by saturday it'll snow...hehe!
