: My Talon Mini-SS project ( kinda long)
: kirby999June 21, 2007, 04:31:06 AM
Ever since I first shot my 18" barrel Talon and heard the report I wished I had gotten another SS . I've grown to like quietness in a pellet rifle . But to do so without added something that could possibly be removed and put on another gun is a no no. To get the Talon close to the SS would take some changing. I didn't realize when buying the Talon that the frame was shorter by almost 5" . That extra part of the frame with a 12" barrel is what gives the SS a shrouded configuration and a quieter shot , a lot quieter . So I ordered a 12" barrel and an end cap like what comes on the SS. Total cost $114 . Then when I got it , I sat down after reading on the Talon owners web sight and decided to utilize that space between the barrel bushings. I bought myself a drill press about a month ago, to do some airgun projects and this would be my first big project I would tackle. I drilled five holes and counter sunk them in the front barrel bushing to allow air (or CO2) to pass through the bushing , adding addition space for the air to go after bouncing off the front end cap . ( the barrel is completely enclosed now inside the frame) I then, following a suggestion from the Talon web sight, drilled a hole in the bottom of the frame between the two barrel bushings to allow the air to escape , lowering the pressure inside the frame and hopefully the report. Just drilling the hole was just part of the job . I had to deburr the hole on the inside and disassemble the power wheel to clean up inside the tube. More work than I anticipated , and a learning experience. I reassembled the rifle adding a one inch piece of hair curler and a 1" stainless steel flat washer between the end of the barrel and the end cap , creating a front space and something to reflect the air backward. I shot it on CO2 first and with the power wheel on #4 the gun is now almost as quiet as my SS and has nothing on the gun that can be removed and put on any thing else. On HPA , even on low power it's not as quiet as my SS but it's low enough to shoot in my backyard without alarming my neighbors. On CO2 I lost about 50 fps with the 12" barrel at 675 avg. but on HPA I don't think I'll notice any loss because on the lowest setting it was averaging 905 fps with superdomes. kirby

Way to go David..:) I think I will bypass all the work and just get a TalonSS..:) But that sounded like a tedious project. Now you know your Talon from the inside out..:) FYI, you have got me very hot and bothered over getting a new TalonSS.. hehehe. If it was not for you letting me shoot yours at the meet, I may have just passed it up..:) I thought Dano would trade me his TalonSS for my Sumatra but now I think he is getting second thoughts..:) May just have to sell my Sumatra outright and buy the TalonSS. Next will be a tank and yoke assy. Oh, and that idea of yours about having two tanks in tandom sounds real good.. so I guess I will be looking for a couple scuba tanks with 2800psi capacity to fill my FX and the new TalonSS..:) Thanks for sharing David and hope your accuracy does not change...

Thanks Gene, Sometimes you just gotta jump right in there to find out if you can do something. I think Dano done found something he likes playing with , with that Talon SS he's got. hehe. They are fun to shoot. I think going for the SS is a good move . I thought of about getting a .22 cal barrel this time but I think the .177 at 900+ fps will take care of any thing I'm wanting to shoot. Guess I won't be needing that frame extension I talked about , I like keeping it looking stock anyways. . kirby

http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k171/kirby001/Talons009.jpg here's a picture showing the difference between my Talon SS and Talon Mini- SS. I think it needs a smaller scope maybe a 2x7x32 .kirby

I agree that a slightly smaller scope would be 'just the rightlook' on that setup.
Howdoes itgroup now? Will it stillkill paintballs at 30m?

Hey, David, looks good, but man that thing's tiny! I've had crappy luck with them, but you might consider a 6x Bug Buster for it, I think it would be a perfect fit. Who knows, you might get lucky and get one that has good optics :-)! Later.

J , the accuracy is great thanks to the LW choked barrel . I've shot some cloverleafs at 20 yards from the sitting position with superdomes .I may go with the 4X power barska AG scope I have , there's something to be said for simplicity in a hunting gun and 4X is plenty for squirrels. I have a lot of experimenting to do with the gun. I have a micro-meter tank on it's way ; which should give me 200 shots on HPA, at I hope around 750fps or better with some JSB predators. . which will also let me keep shooting even when it turns cold. I'm going to be checking out the how the cold affects these guns on CO2 , next winter since the tank is so big , it may not affect them that much . kirby

Hey Kirby,
You did a fine job ! She really look good, I wish you the best of luck with your babies .

I'mvery interested in hearing about it. There may be atalon on the horizon in Centerville . . .(http://forums.beerandshots.com/images/smilies/hmmm.gif)

Hey, how did you go about drilling the front bushing. I took mine all apart last night, and near as I can tell the from barrel bushing is a press fit.....so, uhm, how does a guy get his drill press in there?

Hey, Dan, I just read something about this on TOG. Cut a slot in a peice of plywood that just fits the barrel, and use it to tap the bushing off the barrel. Same way you take a muzzle brake off a Gamo :-)! Mine's on it's way, can't wait! Later.

hehe...I had the thing apart here at the puter desk while I was typing emails. Really should save my handiwork for the garage, but that gun and a handful of allen wrenches are a dream. There's maybe 20 pieces to the whole dumb thing, probably the same or less than a Cr2240. Hard to mess up unless you lose a spring or something. Thanks for the info on the front bushing, I'll probably vent mine at some point.

My barrel bushings have a set screw . I just loosen the screw and it slid right off. The hardest part was getting lined back up on the barrel. kirby

A set screw?????????
What the heck? Man, I swear mine were pounded on with a 28oz. Estwing hammer....not in any hurry to pound them off either.

......you dont have a spare 18" barrel you're willing to part with are ya?

I work at my desk all the time, better light, cleaner, and I have LOTS of AG related info on my computer. Tore down the 77 here, worked on the new CFX's trigger, installed the GRT III in it last night, scopes, the list just goes on and on. Yeah, Dan, kinda like me :-)! Later, bud.

What's the best hand pump? I've got a couple of free SCUBA tanks, need hydro but in good shape, and a (relatively) close place to get them filled. But I'm going to need a pump. The BAM is out, I don't want to spend more time tinkering with the damn pump than I do my rifle! But that still leaves 3 or 4 others, all fairly close in price. How do I decide? Thanks!

LOL, I hadn't decided yet whether I'm keeping it or not . If I do decide to get rid of it ,I'll let you know first. I've also got a Qbrake to fit it, that makes it uh... environmentally friendly . hehe. kirby

Well, honestly I'm really looking for a nice 24" so I can wind this thing out real good when I take it to the NTAGM Shootouts on the ranch:)

I'd like to try a 24" barrel myself. But I think I'd go up to a .22 cal. just to have the option of a different caliber for larger game. I'd read where some guys have taken wild hogs with their Talon. I wouldn't mind taking a "yote" with an air gun, not sure about a hog. kirby
