: Some CFX Changes
: plateshooter June 27, 2007, 12:45:36 AM
I have two Gamo rifles, both which I found rather unpleasant to shoot due to the recoil and twang they had.

I also have two crosman rifles, a Phantom, and a Quest, which have very little recoil and no noticeable spring twang.  Hmmmmm I said to myself.  I think I will put Crosman guts in my Gamos and see what happens.
So I did.  It is working out great for me.

I took the heavy top hat out of the CFX and replaced it with a much lighter Crosman tophat.  This seems to decrease the lock time.  I installed a new Crosman piston seal as the Gamo one was a bit nicked up from the original installation.  I used a new Crosman spring which seems to fit tighter on the Gamo spring guide. Polished the parts as in the numerous tuning guides,  Lubed the assembly with those fine Maccarri lubes, and put it back together.

My CFX is now, the most accurate air rifle I own.  It recoils less , has almost no twang at all, and has a faster lock time, that allows ME to make those ragged hole 25yard groups that I am always striving for.

I haven't chronyed it yet, but I don't think I lost any velocity.  I will find out this weekend after the new seal gets seated better.

Anyway, those sticky dots on my target are in real trouble now, and my 60 yard swinger will need some new paint real soon.

Got the Chrony out today to check the difference in fps with the Crosman guts compared to the original guts.  Results were:
CPHP Gamo guts 678fps  Crosman guts 692fps.
Gamo Match WC Gamo guts 736fps  Crosman guts 718fps
RWS Hobby  Gamo guts 769fps  Crosman guts  766fps

Not much difference in fps, but my groups shrunk more than half due to the smoother firing cycle.  Crosman spring and seal under 10 bucks, Gamo spring and seal, I have no idea :)
