: Morning Rabbit Hunt

Well, since everyone in my house, but me, sleeps in, I decided to go rabbit hunting right outside of town, where the national forest boundary starts.  This is mostly steep canyons and scrub brush area, but I walked an open field right across the gate.  I took my newly Charlie tuned RWS 48 (.22) and put some Crossman Premiers in my shirt pocket.  I arrived at 6 AM and walked along the dirt road and then cut over to the open field.  Before I could cross over a cottontail hightailed it for the brush line, and while I was looking for him I came across another cottontail that stopped at the edge of the brush.  I found him with my binoculars sitting among some weeds about 45 or 50 yards away.  I brought the crosshairs up and put them on his head and let it fly.  I heard the solid thump of a hit, but he was still moving.  I caught him a little forward of where I wanted, so I followed it up with a killing shot.  I found a stick and put it through his back leg so I could carry it while I continued hunting.  I came across one more cottontail, but he ran for cover before I get a shot off.   Went back to my car and grabbed the camera.  I was back at my house an hour after I left.  A nice little morning hunt.

Thanks Bill.  It feels good to shoot that RWS 48 and have it hit dead on.  I have Charlie Tuna and a new BKL scope mount to thank for it.

Look's like a great shot to me, below the ear and behind the eye. Sometimes they keep going until thier fusebox shut's down and tell's them that their dead. Again , fine shootin and super pic's, your baby seem's happy, they just love posing with their trophies. Ed

Thanks Ed.  The first shot caught it below and forward of the eye, and the other one is the exit of the follow-up shot, (I think).  It felt good to get out there with an air rifle that I can count on now.

Thanks Barry.  I have to tell you that the gate is locked, and if I put a $100 deposit down I can get the key to access the road to the National Forest.  I don't know, something seems wrong about that.  And, houses are being built right up to that gate, with the road being all but hidden off the main street.  There are no real trees in these mountains next to my town, just steep canyons and scrub brush, but I am thinking about getting that key and exploring up there and try to find some open areas to hunt.  The real forest area is about an hour away, but it is nice to hunt 12 minutes from my house.

Thanks Jeff.  I have to say, your stories inspired me to get out there.  Nothing like being out there in the early morning.  Wish that was my job, lol.

Great shot. I have been kicking around the thought of a 48, glad to see yours out in the field.

Thanks Bob.  Before it was tuned by Charlie Tuna and the new BKL mount, the 48 drove me crazy.  Now it hits dead on, and hard.  Glad I kept it, lol.
