I wanted a nice scope for my Air Arms S400C carbine with the side focus feature and this is , I hope the nicest one in my price range. I ordered one last night from Midsouth . I wish it had a mil-dot reticle but I couldn't find one that had all the features I wanted without going to a Leepers and I really didn't want to go there. I've always had good luck with Simmons . When I get it in , I'll report how I like or dislike it . I'll be using it for hunter field target matches , and the side focus should be easier to use. I'll have to find myself one of those wheels to put on the SF knob. kirby

David, I just bought a new Simmons Master ProHunter 4-12X40 SF a couple weeks ago. It is very clear and sharp. I don't think you would do better unless you got a Mil Dot in a Leapers at $300.00 plus..
Good Luck

Thanks Gene ; that's good to here .Will it focus down to 10 yards on 12X ? My BSA ( 3x12x40AO)will and so does the Simmons 8 point(3x12x40AO) that I have . I just needed(wanted ) one with the side focus as that would be easier to adjust while sitting and range finding on the field target course. kirby

Sorry David, it is a 6-18X40 SF, and yes this one focuses down to 10 yards very nicely. Also you may find that that scope only weighs like 12 oz. ...:) They are very sweet scopes buddy. I am going to get the 4-12X40 SF scope from Optics Planet as soon as they get them in. They have free shipping.. Gene

I got mine from Midsouth and with shipping it was a few cents under $150. That about as much as I can handle in a scope without selling my TalonSS or something . hehe I saw it a Natchez for $130 something plus shipping , of course they won't ship to Georgia. thanks Gene; kirby

Got my Simmons side focus today finally and I'm sending it back. I wasn't crazy about it. Yea , it was clear , but I didn't like the crosshairs the X was too small , I like the inside cross to be a bigger X , not in thickness, in size. It didn't have target turrets as I had seen in a picture and the side focus was stiff. When I focused it, the rubber covering bunched up when I tried to turn it and the side focus didn't have yardages on it . just little circles. For almost 3 times what I paid for my BSA airgun 3x12x40, it just didn't cut it. I may try one of the BSA 4x16x40 mil-dots. I wanted mil-dots anyway. kirby

Which model Simmons did you buy Dave?
Gene
-
It was the Simmons prohunter Master series 4x12x40 SF. It was supposed to be this one http://www.opticsplanet.net/simmons-master-series-prohunter-4-12x40-sf-riflescope-517716.html . .kirby

So there you go David...:) Like I always say. Rifle Scopes are a personal preference..:) I think that scope is the best thing since sliced bread but not everyone is gonna like them..:) I do know it does not make a difference if I shoot with a MilDot or not, as long as the glass is clear and I can line up the cross hairs with the target, I am good to go..:) And that is my personal preference for the type of scope I like..:)

Gene, I never said the scope wasn't clear ,it was . My complaint was no target turrets like in the picture and the size or design of the crosshairs . I have 3 Simmons 8 Point scopes that have the crosshair that I prefer , as does the the BSA ,if I can't have the mildots, I need the larger Center X for calculating my hold over on targets. I use the top of the bottom post at 45 yards on 12x , on the scope I sent back it would only be good for 35 yard. kirby

David Do you remember the Simmons Scope I had on my FX Cyclone? Those are the ones I am referring to and I now have4 of them. I do have one Simmons Master Series 6-24-40 SF ProHunter Air Gun Scope, that I just bought recently and it has the TruePlex Cross hairs like my Simmons Pro Air that was on my FX Cyclone. Maybe there is another model that I am not aware of that has the finer cross hairs. But it does not have the high turrets like the Pro Air. But of course I am not into FT shooting where that feature would be easier to adjust. But I love the side wheel AO instead of the normal front AO.. Also they only weigh about 12 oz, compared to the Pro Air, which is around 14 to 15 oz. And like I said everyone who shoots has there own preference in which scopes fulfils there needs. Good Luck with your new scope Gene

Hey, Gene. Are these scopes heavy recoil rated?
Ric G
-
Simmons says none of their SF scopes are heavy recoil rated for magnum spring piston airguns. This came from Optics Planet customer service.

Hey Ric if you can find a Pro Air it will be used as they are not made any longer. They are heavy recoil rated. So are some of the Bushnells Banners.
-
All Bushnell, Leupold, and Burris scopes are all approved, rated for air gun recoil. The ones that are specifically recommended for them are the ones that have AO down to 10yds. or are parallax adjusted for air guns. Bushnell on their web site specifically recommends the Banners and Trophys in 4-12 x 40 and 6-18 x 40 as being ideal for heavy recoil air rifles. Obivously the Legends and Elites that have AO work well on air rifles too.
