: strange shot with CFX
: MartinDWhite August 01, 2007, 12:41:32 PM
I was shotting my cfx (which is unmodified except for a CDT trigger). All was well, ~30 shots in from 20 yards in a less than 1 inch circle, then a shot sounded different. Like a tin can hit with a baseball bat, very differnt from the normal thung and small twang I am used to. I could not see the impact though the scope so I walked up to the target and saw the hole from the last pellet was about 6 inches low and 4 inches left. I then shot the next ~30 shots the same as the first, from 20 yards in less than a 1 inch circle. I have shot maybe 1000 shots though this CFX, it is a relatively new gun.  What happened?

What pellets are you using? Sounds like maybe one of the pellets may have been deformed or undersized. That could have caused a "partial dry fire" resulting in the sound and erratic shot impact. If all other shots afterwards have been ok and accuracy didn't suffer I wouldn't  worry too much. Maybe just give the pellets a quick eye ball before you load 'em. I had that happen to me with a undersized .22 cal Crosman Premier in my RX-1. The shot sounded like a rimfire, scared the beejeezus out me. No harm,  but I shot those pellets only in the PCP rifles now. HTH

I do quite abit of target shooting and what Nathan said is exactly what used to happen to me before I started eye balling the pellets before I insert them in to the bore. Some that are terribly deformed or undersize will do what you described. So now I look at them when I am rolling them through my fingers before I load them.. It works..:)

By any chance was the breach a little hard to close on that shot? If the pellet isn't all the way in, the rotating breach can inadvertently deform the skirt as you close it.
