Looks really sweet with that nice wood stock Barry..:) Looks like a keeper to me..:) Good accuracy as well and I see that you have a CDT trigger instead of an insert..:)

Could you provide details on the guns?  The second set of pics seems to be an all black Viper.  Did you put a new stock on that gun?

Nice group, by the way.  Mine shoots well, but I'm having difficulty with the amount of recoil for groups of more than five or six.  I (underline the I) just can't seem to keep them together.  It's not tuned and not even broken in.  I have less than 500 shots through it, but I'll get there.

Great lookin Rife Barry,

I know youmadethe correct choice with Bob's GRT-III Trigger. And I would recommend to anyone out there, to get the best trigger made !

The GRT-III, is the BEST ! AND IT'S GREAT ! The GRT-III IS the BEST MONEY I HAVE EVER SPENT ON ANY Firearm/ Air Arm Modification ! And I have waisted money on products that cost oh so much more and didn't perform !

Anyway, Very Nice Job Barry, im Jealous !

how loud is your viper, i was thinking of getting one but my neighbors might not like the noise.  i wonder if the new whisper is quieter than the viper?
: RE: Couldn`t resist
: August 10, 2007, 10:35:23 PM
From what I`ve read the whisper is prob. quieter,but...the viper isn`t "loud" compared to any other 900 fps spring gun...imo.And yeah Ed,the lights good after dark it`s a surefire it`ll light up a 40 yard target!I love it when the other half goes to bed!Ought oh....was I just thinkin that???
: RE: Couldn`t resist

does your viper have a metal barrel or is it a plastic jacket over metal barrel,   i guess the whisper has a lot of plastic on it(barrel jacket)  i would think that is why the whisper is so light.   i would prefer the more steel the better :)
: RE: Couldn`t resist
: August 11, 2007, 05:33:13 AM
Nope it`s all steel inside and out...
: RE: Couldn`t resist
: Gene_SC August 11, 2007, 05:50:25 AM

I agree with you about the plastic. I really do not like it myself, but after testing the new Gamo Whisper and visably looking the barrel over and the final target placement I have a bit more respect than before. It seems the rifling in the new barrelsare much more prodomanent and uniform. I was impressed with the accuracy of the Gamo Whisper with the shrouded steel barrel. And that is one of the reasons's I bought one for myself...:)

Gene,I`ve been reading about a cracking problem around the breech block, heard anything like that?
: RE: Couldn`t resist
: Gene_SC August 11, 2007, 11:09:30 AM

I have not heard about the plastic cracking but I will keep an eye out for it. I have over a 1000 rounds through it now and will be pulling it down for inspection, deburr, lube tune, seal, spring guide and GRT trigger. Will look very closely around the breech and barrel area. I know I will pump another few thousand rounds through her in a month or so and that will be a great test to see if she developes any cracks. Gamo is good with there warranty so if it does happen, I will just be without her for a couple of weeks..;)

well i picked up a gamo viper rifle at the local sporting goods shop today,  had $20. off coupon plus   MA. is having no sales tax today and tomorrow so i had to buy something :) .    gun seems to be built very good no plastic on any of the business parts.    scope was missing some torx screws though.   i lossened up the three scope mount dovetail screws and the mount seemed to not slide on the dovetail?  is it pinned?      this gun is very quiet i dont know what all the fuse with noise on these guns is, i think most of the noise comes from the spring in the gun. not the blast of air.      the viper kicks like a mule though, i was not used to that,  you cant see the target getting hit because the gun jumps so much.      the trigger pull is very hard and i havent tried adjusting it yet.         does the GRT-III trigger that charliedatuna  makes   fit the viper?  and is it a good  improvement over stock?         overall iam very happy with gun, only shot 100 pellets through it today just to get the scope close.  the pba pellets hit 2 inches higher than all the other gamo pellets i was using at 25 yards and they were a little louder.   very good gun so far, time will tell

Never have took off the riser on any of my Gamo's that come with them. Really no need to. That power plant in the Viper is very harsh at first until you get a thousand or so pellets through the chamber. Yes the CDT GRT-III is a vast improvement over the stock trigger that Gamo uses. Do youself a favor and invest in a GRT-III trigger and you will love it. Lite pull with crisp second stage. I have found that even if you do a basic lube and deburr tune on the Gamo's air rifles it makes a world of difference. If you send your Viper to CDT he can do a tune and install the trigger for you and you will have a fantastic shooter when you get it back. Will last you for many years to come without wearing out. iam ordering a grt-III trigger right now for my viper.     while i have the stock off to install trigger is there anything i can lube(spring/slide/sleeve) which will help reduce the big recoil kick? any one have info/pics?      thanks again for all your help, this forum is great.   bryan

Do not pour any lubs into action where spring is. You can follow CDT's instructions on how to install the trigger and lube it. You can wipe some clear tar on the bear trap linkage and the roller on the cocking linkage. Also you can lube the pivet points of the barrel to action and put some clear tar on the plunger and pin on the lockup. Use these lubs sparingly..:) In order to do a complete deburr and lube you need to us a spring compressor and remove the spring and piston from action. Like I said if you did a complete Turbo Tune on the Viper you would not know it was the same air rifle. Believe me cause I have 13 Gamo's which have been Turbo Tuned and they are smooth to cock with no spring noise or vibration now. And with the GRT-III trigger you have a $500.00 to $600.00 high end air rifle for less than $200.00...:).

what is clear tar? never heard of that lube.      just got in from putting some more lead thru gun and one thing i noticed is different pellets shoot totaly different.   i bought a 4 pack of gamo pellets, (hunter, match, and two others i dont remember the names). i sited it in with the match pellets and the other three wont even hit a paper plate at 20 yards.  oh well i will just use one kind of pellet from now on.   hope my new cdt trigger will be in this week :)

Keep trying different pellet's and brand's, there's one out there that will find the mark......everytime. :) Ed

Ya Paul, it is the same power plant. I think Barry said it was all steel breech and barrel. If so it has the stepped bolt with steel bushing and should have the spring steel thrust washers.

Yup, what Gene said.Well with the exception of the reducer from the ID of the shroud to the OD of the barrel.
