: An Interesting Hunt...
: Randino August 09, 2007, 07:58:44 PM
I got a new hunting blind, and I just couldn't wait to try it out :) Works well, although its incredibly hard to fold up. I decided to wait in it for some squirrels to come to my bait, a pile of birdseed. I waited for 2 hours and not a single squirrel, so I went out to find one.

Still no luck! not a squirrel to be had in the whole darn forest! I went back to my blind, and waited some more. an hour later, with no squirrels in sight, my dad calls me up, telling me to come back to camp. disgruntled by my rotten luck I make my way back down the trail, when all of a sudden a blur goes darting around the corner! within a second my rifle is raised, honed in on the blur,as it skids to a halt right in front of me! A fawn, is standing right in front of me! Terrified! I just stood there, waiting for it to make its move, wishing I had a camera, and at the same time wondering if the not so harmless fawn is gonna knock me of my feet! The fawn makes its move, Bang! The fawn, caught in the air, drops and lands at my feet.

Now, you didn't really think I was gonna shoot a fawn, did you? Heh, the cute little guy darted down a trail to the side, and I watched him (or her) dart off into the woods. That was great. Such a cute little guy:) Well worth the hunt. I will try again tomorrow, in the same spot, with fresh bait, as We left it out for them, so they learn where I want them to get food ;)

We forgot the camera, but I have some pictures of the camp spot, and my gun. These were taken the day I got to try out my GRT III trigger, so that should explain my smile :)

Great pic's of you and your girl there Randy and you had a run in with Bambi hehe. Sometimes the varment's just don't want to come out and play. Question, is that a state campground ? and are you allowed to small game hunt?. The state's which I have lived in don't allow any kind of hunting in their campground's. Just don't want one of our GTA family member's to get fined or worse. Might want to check your local law's, just a thought.:) Again nice pic's Randy. Ed

Loved the story Randy, and the pics were great.  Nice lookin shooter ya got there.

That new blind you got,,, is it one of those "pop up" blinds ???  Reason I ask is that I bought one of the "pop up" blinds a few months ago and while I absolutely  loved it from the moment I set it up I had a heck of a time folding the darn thing up.  I tried and tried and it was just such a pain in the butt.  Then all of a sudden, as I read the folding instructions and looked at the pictures for the 10,000  time it suddenly clicked.......

When you get to the last folding stage you have to sorta twist the whole thing and apply some pressure and it all of a sudden just springs into place and fold up perfectly.  Takes a little practice but once you get it down pat it's a breeze.

If you didn't get a pop up blind then just disregard everything I just wrote.   :)

Once again,,, nice pics,,,, look forward to your next post.....

Hey Randy,

Good post ! Beautiful area you have found there.

Those Fawns can surprise you in the brush, but it's Mom you need to watch for. I had to patch up and carry out a fellow hunter, that was trying to attract deer by rattling a set of antlers. He was gored from behind, and the deer punctured his lung.

When you see little ones, you can bet Mom is near by !

And as Ed has pointed out, check your State Game Laws out and purchase your hunting licence, if needed. I'd hate to see you meet the Game Warden out there while not in compliance with the Game Laws !

Great photos, and a sweet baby in your arms there !

Keep us included in your hunts !

Sounds kinda like the description of how to fold up a bandsaw blade. Except with them you'll surely want to wear gloves.

Randy, I also enjoyed your narrative of "The Bambi Encounter", and ya got me there at first. I laughed out loud when I got to the next paragraph. Good one!

It's actually not a state park, we made it :) The fire pit was dug out, and cemented by my dad. We dragged the logs there with our 4 wheeler. This is a small floodplain behind a corn field, about 3 miles from any road, with a river on the other side. We will look into it though. I believe it is legal to remove pests from the land, and those squirrels are a pest to the Farmer's  corn field. He knows we are out there, and told us it was ok, so we should be alright. laws have a funny way of sneaking up and biting you in the but though, so I will look into it. Thanks guys.

I was reading the story, following along, and then, .....dang he shot the fawn......but, wait a sec, there was no picture of any game...so....you got me, lol.  Those sighting are always fun.  Keep wondering what I will be thinking if I run across a cougar out here.  Good story.

I think if it is private property, you are good to go.  I am not totally sure, but think that's how it is.
