: Gamo Whisper Pellets?
: johncedarhill August 18, 2007, 08:38:17 AM
This is my first Gamo rifle but not my first or last "air rifle". I installed a Grt trigger. So now I am sifting through the pellet selection. I noticed that the velocity tests for the whisper were done with Gamo pellets. I ran around and found some in .177 the Hunters and Magnums locally. Sloppy groups. The best I shot were with Beeman Crow Magnum. Silver Bear, Crossman Accupell, and JSB also poor by comparison. I went back to the review and saw the last set of targets were shot with RWS Superdomes. Is this the preferred Gamo Pellet?. Right now I only have them in .22. I am really surprised at the variation between pellets in springers etc. I would have thought that Gamo shoots well in a Gamo. I did go back and shoot the Cro mags just to make sure something did not shift. They continued to shoot well.

Hey John how about those pesky pellets! While one brand of pellet will work great in your Gamo Whisper, the same brand of pellet might  shoot terrible in another persons Whisper. That is the nature of springers. I have found that after around 1000 shots in my Gamo's, they finally settle down and you need to keep trying different pellets to find "the" right one that your gun finally likes the best. For my Gamo's, they all love JSB Predators and hollowpoints. They may be pricey but they are by far most accurate pellet I have tried. BTW, my CFX loved Gamo Rocket's at first then hated them after the break in period was over. Keep trying different pellets and eventually you will find the best brand for you gun. Good luck 8)

Ya John, Greg is absolutely correct about the springers and pellets..:) There is no set pellet for a particular springer. While PCP's and Co2's are not as picky but the springers definitely are.. For the most part the Superdomes are good all around pellets and I find if my springer likes Superdomes it also like the Preditors as well. But you just never know about springers and pellets. I probably have every pellet that is on the market and quite abit of money tied up in them..:) But I am an avid shooter and every time I get a new springer I go through the same thing Greg said. Trying each one before break in and of course going through them after all over again. I have had a springer shooting dead on after a 1000 or so pellets and it was happy with a particular pellet at that stage. Then I would do a complete Turbo Tune on it and have to change pellets again because they absolutely hated the previous ones..:) Go Figure..:) I am not saying buy a fortune in pellets but  you need to keep an open mind about using different ones. Don't go by what others may say about a particular pellet shooting bad in there springer, because that pellet may work fantastic in yours..:)

Good Luck

John. very sound advice you have gotten, and yes, every springer air rifle will have a pellet or two that is its favorite, not much rhyme or reason to it. You might want to try one of the pellet samplers from Sraight Shooters (link to them in the Mall). This is a great way to try a large variety of different make, size and weight pellets without spending a fortune.

My suggestion is a little different.  Pick something cheap and readily available, and run about 1000 through your gun.  Don't worry about groups or even hitting the target, just shoot it.  Then get the Straight Shooters sampler, and figure out what shoots best.  I got my first "adult" airgun about a year ago, a .177 CFX.  Out of the box, it loved Crow Magnums.  Once I got past the break-in period, it shot it's best with JSB Exact 4.52's.  After I installed a Theoben gas ram, it's best all around pellet was and is the RWS Superdome.  And after you've gone through all that, get a PCP :-)!  Sorry, I couldn't resist.  But it's been a long day, and sometimes, I just crack myself up.  Later.

Believe it or not my GRT3 equipped Whisper likes RWS Supermags. Its the only on of my rifles that will group them.
