I have used them in photography Doc,

And they are great for stabilizing timed shots, in dim lighting. And are very easy to carry along on a shoot. Tripods get in the way of bystanders feet. lol

I have used crossed shooting sticks while hunting, and they worked well, in areas that had high grass and few trees.

I've used one on occassion, matter of fact I always keep it with the hunting gear that's always stowed away in my truck.  A useful tool at times, although like Ed (Shadow) when I'm hunting small game I usually always have a tree limb or something to lean against.

Can be a handy shooting aid though if like Bill said you're in an area where there's nothing to lean against.

Most of my shots are offhand or from a kneeling position. I use hunting as a form of target practice. Not allowed aids in target shooting so I dont use them in the field. I don't want to develope bad habbits.
