Crosman was good for their word and sent me a Phantom stock for free - but it was not a new one. Evidently, it was one they replaced under warranty. The screw holes obviously had been used - and I found out that the Phantom stock is painted! I know this because the one they sent me is shedding its finish, and it leaves black flakes on my hands.
Needless to say, I'm not complaining - and I can easily salvage this stock if I can strip the original finish completely off without harming the plastic.
Any suggestions?

Try goo-gone or goof-off. These should not harm the plastic but should remove the paint. Of course try this in an inconspicuous place, like your basement. LOL
But try inside of the stock or under the but plate to make sure it won't eat the plastic.

Castrol Dot 4 brake fuid, I've used it on plastic model's etc, doesn't damage the plastic. Easy off is also a good paint remover, dont breath those fume's hehe. Ed

used it on my ShadowSport with a synthetic stock, I had no problem's :0 Just what I use sometimes since I spend some time camo painting different types of material's. Just giving some idea's, always test a small area first. Just my pellet's worth that's all. Ed

That makes sense. Although I do suspect that it doesn't have to be specifically Castrol DOT 4, since that uses the same base as the cheaper stuff.
I'll give it a shot.

Regular cheapo brake fluid should do just fine.
Back in my model car building days (when I was a kid back in the late 60's, I had a paper route which provided all the cash I needed for my comic book/ Ford bubble gum/beef jerky/1:25th scale plastic car model addictions, plus the freedom to ride my bike pretty much anywhere in town) my brother and I used regular ol' Prestone DOT3 brake fluid to remove paint from the plastic car bodies when we wanted to do a repaint. Just had to make sure to wash it off well with soapy water, especially down in the door joint lines, or the new paint would peel. We never saw any crazing of the plastic. I don't see any reason it would cause a problem with a plastic airgun stock.
I'd say try it on an inconsipicuous spot first too, just to be safe.

I can attest to DOT3 brake fluid taking the finish off painted plastic surfaces... I ruined the grill on my Dodge van. :(

Use a blowtorch and a sharp chisel, should take the paint off and wont harm the screws...just kidding:)
Maybe just scuff sand with some 220 grit, wipe with alcohol and repaint flat black or whatever suits your fancy...bedliner? Also some good paints for plastic out there, but I think most any Krylon cheapo paint will stick if you scuff/clean it well enough. Hth!

Blowtorch lol Dano, there's plasticoat paint if your going to reshoot it to. Ed
