Ya know Vince,,,, it's funny you posted this cause I've been wondering about the same thing for awhile now.   I've been thinking about ordering a 34 Panther but I'm not sure what caliber to get it in.    If I was just gonna use it for birds at the duck farm it would be easy,,,, I'd get the .177, but the thing is I might also want to use it for squirrels and rabbits and such.    To bad they don't make it in .20 caliber,,, that would make the choice real simple,,,,,, the best of both worlds   :)

Like I need more.

Actually, the jury's still out on the RWS34 in general. I wasn't particularly enthralled with the one I had.

Still, I sure as heck don't need any more Crosmans!

...then it's "wood or Panther?"

AND DON'T SAY BOTH!

I WOOD say wood. I have a Viper and it's nice but I haven't got used to the synthetic stock. I like the hunter elite stock better. Oh forgot I would get one in .22. I'm lacking in the .22 springer dept. but thats just me.

If you want a bench gun I would go with the wood stock. For a field gun I would choose the Panther stock. Actually, I slightly prefer the Panther stock overall.

I fitted a Pachmayr slip-on recoil pad to my wood 34, vast improvement over the bare wood. I used the small size in the Pachmayr (they come in SM, MED, LG, brown or black. I looked at several different makes of the slip-ons, the Pachmayr was by far the nicest looking of the bunch, and prefered the black over brown.)

Not to highjack this post but what scope is on your 34?

Thanks

It's a 4-12 x40 Bushy Banner Jason, in a BKL 260 D7 mount.

...but the lack of a rubber buttpad is a bummer.

The Panther has a straight comb, no Monte Carlo rise, the stock is longer. The Panther feels lighter than the wood 34, and these are not featherweight rifles. The molded in checkering on the Panther is very crisp. I like the feel of the Panther stock over the wood, but that's just me. And yes, the Panther stock has a rubber butt pad.

Peak, I like the look of the scope on that Panther. I recently purchased a Panther and have been thinking of a scope. I've read everything in hear about the droop, and the one piece mount and the scopes. All that adds up to alot more $$$$..What do you on your Panther and do you like it?

And to respond to the post in general I love the panther for its stock and I love the power the .22 delivers..:) Those squirrels go down fast!

That was the RWS 4x scope and two piece C-Mounts that came with my Panther in the package I bought. The scope was very clear, good optics, but didn't hold up, the Panther shot it to bits, and the C-mounts are junk. My Panther is without a scope at the moment. I am putting another BKL 260 D7 one piece mount and a 3-9x Leapers on it soon.

Hello,I bought a 34 in wood this spring, and it's .22cal. It is my first .22 cal springer and I bought it to hunt squirrels. I really wanted a 48 but it just wasn't in the budget. Over-all I'm impressed with it and suprised at the velocity I'm getting compared to what is mentioned on some of the forums. I get around 790fps with hobbies and in the low 700's with CP's, this is after this gun has had about 500shots through it. Accuracy is around 1 1/4" at twenty-five yards, using the open sights the gun came with .  The .22 does seem to hit harder than my R-10, or the RWS 320 in .177 I've been using. Knocks the plates down on my Devin biathalon target with much greater authority.

Gosh, I have a 177 model 40, which is a 34 without sights and its the fastest gun in the rack (I also have an R9).  I just ordered a blemished .22 barrel from UMAREX as a swap barrel for it.  I have an HW 50 in 22 that sends my airgun sihlouettes flying compared to the 177 which just knocks them down.  Either caliber is accurate with the right pellet.  The .177 shoots flatter for long distance accuracy cause its just faster with any given power plant, but the 22 is no less accurate if you can dope the elevation.  Good luck.

Two things that weigh heavily in my mind:

One, the Panther comes with a buttpad installed, yes?

Two, have you ever heard the pop from a .22cal hitting an english sparrow, or better yet, the breast of a  pigeon.

If I was going to spend money again, I'd go with a big slug and a buttpad. Unless you're gifted with a band saw and a keen eye, you can't put a buttpad on a 34 without it looking ... well, you know how it looks.
