I've noticed on my fairly low-mileage (but refurb) CFX that the breach seal is leaking - I can see a very faint puff coming from I believe the rear seal when I shoot it.
I assume that it shouldn't be doing this...
-
Nope Vince, mine doesn't. Ed
-
What year was it made?
-
mine don't do it neither
-
Vince, I've got a whisp of smoke that I can catch in the sunlight, but I'm not sure if its from the rear seal. When I fire and then cock again, and open the breech, there is a small amount of white smoke there, in the breech area. Also, mine is a 2007 year, just in case that is important later.
-
Nope...Shouldn't be anything puffing.
As it turns out that was my problem with the Shadow Sport I posted about. I had assumed the barrel was gone, but it was just a bad seal.
Ordered seals for it and now it's driving tacks again. Quietly too!

About breech seals for the CFX. They say you have to disassemble the rifle to replace the breech seal, which of course, voids your warranty. NOT TRUE! It takes some care and finesse, but with the rifle cocked and the loading port lever removed, you can slide the whole rotary back and dig the old seal out with a needle or something similar. You do have to be careful, it's easy to push it back too far, then you do have to take it apart, most likely. The better technique might be to pull the cocking lever far enough back to get at the seal, then clamp it in place. I've done it both ways, the second is actually easier, and has the added advantage that if you do push the rotary too far back, you can ease it back into place. I went through this with Gamo almost a year ago, so I don't remember the part number, but I'm sure Bob has it. Just make it clear when you call Gamo that you KNOW you don't have to take the gun apart to replace it, and they should cough up the seals. BTW, it's the same deal as the rest of their seals, a 4 pack for around $10. Good luck.

There's two rotary seals, a front and a rear. I took my loading port lever, breech lever, rotary lever...whatever it's called...anyway I pried mine up, , pushed the rotary back a little, and I was able to get to the front seal no problem. But it's the rear rotary seal that requires disassembly. Do you concur Daved?

You got it, Dave. The front is a standard Gamo breech seal, the rear is an oring. I went through some hoops with my .177 CFX when I converted it to a gas ram, because of sealing issues. That rear oring is REALLY easy to damage. Had it apart and back together so many times over the course of a couple of weeks, I could strip it down and reassemble it in about 10 minutes, even faster if I was awake :-). Much as I loved my CFX, I think the rotary is it's biggest weakness, and the cause of most of the problems people have with them. I toyed with some ideas for an improved design, but I'm a wood worker, not a metal worker. Maybe someday, my brother still has my original CFX, and maybe I'll play with it again, if it starts giving him any trouble. Assuming I don't switch him over to the Dark Side :-). He REALLY likes my Talon! Later.

Hopefully the front seal is a large, like for the Shadow1K because I have 4 of those seals that I bought from Gamo. Does anyone want to chime in with the actual Gamo size of the front seal....small, medium, or large? Would like to have some spares on hand, as we don't know how long Gamo will have them available.

What causes these CFX breech seals to go bad-the normal wear caused by opening and closing the breech to load?
-
In this link the causes are pointed out, its quite an extensive document, so you gotta read far into it to get to the causes.

The Gamo front breech seal is a special seal and the later one is of a little different design and material but fits them all..
The late front factory breech seal part number is: 33090.
The large o-ring around the rotary body: 1 mm x 20 mm (use Buna 70 #017)
