: a red tree squirrel pic...alive
: davee1 September 17, 2007, 02:39:12 PM

I have a new friend making a nest in my Cottonwood tree. He let me get close, and then the flash scared the heck out of him. Around here, folks like the tree squirrels but despise the ground squirrels.

Also have seen severe attic damage from SC greys, so context {or stewpot} may have some to do with it(http://www.getphpbb.com/phpbb/images/smiles/a_huh.gif)

You know, I have never ever been able to get this close to a squirrel. He's quite tame. I was about 3 feet away. I got a ladder, and climbed up on it about 5 ft, which put me about level with him. I think he's about 11~12 ft up in the tree, which is too low if you ask me. He's very busy, and its hard to get a good pic of him. I would prefer a bit more of his profile but this is the best I could do for now. My dogs are ready to take him out and he teases them a lot. I can't believe he's still around. Seen him last year too.

I'll take him out if he does any of that stuff, but usually around here its the roofrats that do all the damage. I had nightly battles with them and now they are gone, or at least I havent heard or seen one in months. The last rat was taken out months ago, in a rain gutter at about 10ft with my S1K. Got it right in the ear. It was the last thing he ever heard...hehe.

I've got a few squirrels that dug through some shingles, and other areas, to get attic access.  I'm going to use the squirrel piccie as the bullseye for targets, thanks!

They tear-up my lawn, my wife's flowers, roof, attic, you name it.  They all must die, and feed my hunger for penance.

My dad, on the other side of the village, killed one that was trying to wiggle through a hole he had made in the siding, way-up high.

Asked him how he was going to remove it, and he said he was going to leave it half-in, half-out, so the others couldn't get in or out.

Sweet revenge!

Edit: I've thought of throwing some moth-balls in the attic from the garage access, but the smell of those will probably make me sicker than the squirrels, if it wafts downward into the living areas.

Thats funny!!! I wish we had more of them around here so they wouldnt be such a novelty, but this is the only one for blocks. And he's funny as hell, he's so busy he reminds me of a hummingbird with fur. I'll play with him and see if I can get some better pics later. In our neighborhood, there's really no wood on the houses for the squirrels to chew through, we all have stucco walls with tile roofs so I guess them squirrels would rather live in the trees.

You know what, that's an awesome picture.  What were you using for a camera?  I got fairly close to one last summer, but nothing like this.

Thanks! Thats my Minolta Dimage D7. It was Minolta's first foray into the Digital Camera arena, and it is coveted by many. I'll neverpart with mine...It does it all from closeup macros to long range. Its not a DSLR though. Minolta came out with a 7D (ironically, D7 backwards) a few years later that was a DSLR. Got one of them too. Nice!!!

And believe it or not, the D7 can do much better than the handheld quickie that I snapped off on that squirrel. Check out momma dove...did that with a tripod...

J, my warped sense of humor thought you were going a different direction with that image. I hope you don't mind, but I did a little editing on it to show where I thought you were headed.

I'm pretty sure those pics could be submitted somewhere. The quality is fantastic!

Thanks. I've got plenty more of various animals that I come across. I just don't know where to submit them. In the mean time, while I'm waiting to try and figure out how to submit them somewhere or even sell them, I just keep takin more....

Heck yeah man, different magazines have photo contests all the time. Look into home and farm related stuff. Or maybe even different nature and bird watching rags.

You have a real talent with that camera and you seem to be able to get some great angles. You should find a way to get your stuff published.

The Fair is in town and today I happened to walk through one building where there was a photo exhibit... You should definately look into some semi-professional work.

Dookie, I don't know how, and I don't know any semipros to ask about how to get started in that business. I would enjoy it, but I just don't know how to get started, other than submitting to magazines like you suggested in an ealier post.
